- Women's Basketball on TV!!!!! -- Susan, 17:42:30 02/12/03 Wed (xd877f792.ip.ggn.net/216.119.247.146)
I was reading USA Today last week, and there is a big article on CSTV: College Sports Television. Apparently, they are going to be a 24 hour college sports network and they are set to launch February 23rd with a Notre Dame/UCONN women's basketball game for their national audience! There is a link on their website at www.cstv.com for us, the fans, to tell them what we want to see. This is great! They are launching their network with women's basketball and now we have to respond and tell them to show lots of women's college basketball on this new network! Let's get onto www.cstv.com and answer their response form and tell CSTV that we want to see women's basketball on the air!

- How are "new" players looking?? -- b-ball junkie, 11:19:00 09/19/02 Thu (cache-dp07.proxy.aol.com/205.188.209.107)
How are the new players fitting in with the team?? Are they going to be helpful this season. Amy and Reetta can only do so much so hopefully they will learn quickly.

- A Consistent Starting Lineup? -- X-band '01, 05:22:22 02/09/02 Sat (149.cleveland-01rh15rt-oh.dial-access.att.net/12.87.144.149)
Now that the A-10 season is heading into the final 5 games before the conference tournament, Xavier finally put together back-to-back wins for the first time since the Xavier Invitational back in December that included wins over St. Francis and Toledo.
With Kate Kreager out of the starting lineup for the 2nd game in a row, Aida Sarajilia tied her career-high with 12 points to give the Muskie frontcourt a desperately needed boost. Colleen Yukes got the start, but Henderson and Kreager saw most of the time in the post, and between the two, they got 11 points and 8 boards between them.
But this game was won with Amy's leadership, as well as another 30 point game (in response to her 32 against UMass last Saturday). The Muskie defense forced 28 Hawk turnovers, while only committing 15 TOs themselves. It was a good thing too, because the Hawks' Susan Moran easily eclipsed St. Joe's all-time scoring mark during the game.
Although still stuck in 5th place in the West, the Muskies are starting to heat up, and face Temple on Sunday at 2:00 PM. The game can be seen on WCET-Channel 48 in Cincinnati, with Betsy Ross and Nicole Levandusky doing play-by-play.

- I'm just wondering why Aida didn't play much yesterday. When she did play, she played 10 times harder and 100 times more aggressive than Nikki and Alexis put together. I mean, Aida only played 5 minutes, and had 3 points and 3 rebounds. I just don't think Nikki Wells was cutting it last night, nor was Alexis. I realize that the coach is trying to give some of the players some experience, but when you actually have a CHANCE of winning, you have to go with players that will get it done, and last night, Aida was one of those players. - Nikki Wells got her first start last night, but nothing is clicking on defense right now. I just took a good look at how we rate with the rest of the conference, and it's horrible. Dead last in defensive rebounding, dead last in field goal percentage allowed, and 10th overall in points surrendered is a recipe for disaster. Our offense actually has put up halfway decent numbers, but you can't allow opponents to keep shooting at over a 60% clip against you to remain competitive. UD got off to a quick start, and that was the game right there. (NT) -- X-band '01, 02:40:11 01/30/02 Wed

Yesterday, I attempted to access the A-10 women's basketball message board. Instead, I reached a Xavier men's basketball board with that link. Not knowing where else exactly to inquire and being somewhat confused, I asked about it here as I believe another poster from that board did.
It appears that instead of letting us know what is going on, the messages seem to have been deleted. I also note this morning that the links at the top of the page currently link to two different Xavier men's boards (including the one that says A-10 women)!
Oh well, I don't know if this message will last or we will get an answer. It is a shame that a nice board like the A-10 women's board had to get caught up in yet another of the many squabbles and turf wars over Xavier men's basketball. I just hope others realize that not all Xavier fans are like that and that in fact some of the problems are caused by non-XU fans. But be that as it may, I am sorry I can apparently no longer visit the A-10 board.
And I do know that some folks work hard (as I do with mine) to make these message boards a nice place to visit and I commend those who do so.

I think you're a bit ahead of yourself in essentially calling for Melanie's head. Do you remember where this program was before she got here? Did you even care? Sure, this year is going to be rough, but that's what happens when you lose 75% of your scoring. Yes, it's disappointing that we haven't been able to cash in on a "blue chip" recruit, but this program is just beginning to establish itself.
It does trouble me that Cincinnati can bring in kids like Valerie King from IN-state, but I have faith in what Mel's doing. She's bringing in two highly regarded recruits next season in point guard Mandy Geryak (one of the best in Indiana) and 6-1 G/F Tara Boothe from Highlands. One of my best friend's sisters committed to Notre Dame and plays AAU ball with Boothe and says she'll be a big help.
This year is going to be rough. There are going to be some good wins (Mississippi State) and some rough losses (Duquesne) along the way, but this team is so young that it's only going to get better, both this year and next with some more bodies. But stay patient and believe that Melanie knows what she's doing.

Four straight years of post season tourney appearances. Three straight NCAA, including the elite eight. And now a sub-500 season when even wins are ugly. Why? This coaching staff has NOT been able to recruit the right talent to compete with mid-major and higher programs. For four years this coaching staff road the coat tails of three talented players and found some good role players to fill in the gaps. But, during this time, they have not even come close to finding suitable replacements. What's next? Look at the bench. Is there a suitable replacement for Waugh? How about Piipari? I sure don't see it. Compare X to GW. Every year McKeown is able to keep bringing in quality recruits and every year they're at least a top 40 program. What are they doing that we're not? They sure don't have a Cintas to recruit with! Quite frankly, I'm one season ticket holder that expects better in the recruiting effort from these coaches. And if one of you read this...good. Get some players in here that can play the game! Because there are a lot of replacements for coaches that build 500 or less programs.

- A win! -- Big G, 12:05:49 01/12/02 Sat (spider-tm022.proxy.aol.com/152.163.197.52)
We'll take the win against Fordham, but it still hard to watch this team. The inside play continues to be very soft and not very productive. Too bad Nikki Well is so small. She seems to have the best idea on playing the post, but her size is a limitation. Unless the coaches can find a legitimate inside threat, don't look for a return to the top 25 any time in the near future. Looking over the team's current talent, it may take 2 to 3 recruiting classes to get there...unless they pull off some top 25 recruit or get some solid college transfers. But, hey, I might be wrong. Nevertheless, consider taking a good book to read to the next game in case the agony gets to you.

- Some advice for Mel -- gi, 11:05:59 01/04/02 Fri (NoHost/216.142.162.173)
After watching the Dayton game, Mel did the right thing to pull most of the starters early in the 2nd half. With the exception of Amy, too often this team doesn't come to play. This includes Katie who score most of her 24 points late in the games when the decision was pretty much determined. So here's some thoughts;
1) The post players aren't mean enough. They get pushed around by most opponents. We've got 4 to 5 players with the size to play the position. That's 15 to 20 fouls to give. So, use them all. Be mean, not dirty, but close. We need to control the paint if we expect to win. And, our players in these position need a nastier attitude...we're too nice and immature.
2)While I wish we were ready to run a half court offense, we not. So let's press and run more using more of the bench to stay fresh. The freshmen will make mistakes, but they need to play. Statuto did a nice job off the bench. She and the others aren't going to gain confidence sitting.
3)Let's hope the recruiting is being upgraded. To get back to the top 25, the team need help! The right JC transfer in the 4 or 5 position would be a step in the right direction.
Take these thoughts constructively. We all want the same thing...this team improving, playing as a team and winning. But, the status quo ain't getting it done.

- I agree with you completely, especially with what you said about taking the starters out when they're not performing. I mean, in the Middle Tennessee St. game, frankly, XU sucked the whole second half, and they didn't even score for a while at the start of that half. If I were coach, I would have pulled everyone except Waugh and put in Kim, Nikki, Dani, and Yukes. I think Mel needs to make a statement to ALL the players that, hey, if you're not going to play hard, you're not playing at all. But that's just my view. Let's just hope XU plays with some heart today against the Dukes. (NT) -- xuwbb4ever5_35, 16:36:14 01/04/02 Fri

- Thoughts on the Dayton Game -- DAve, 10:42:34 01/03/02 Thu (net162-243.xu.edu/205.133.162.243)
After last night's loss to Dayton a couple things come to my mind.
1) Who will score is about as mystifying as with the men. In the previous game Kreager scored 3 and folks were wondering what was wrong. Last evening she scored 24. Piipari scored 28 and last night scored 2 (1-16!!!!).
2) When Coach Balcomb sits down all her starters (except Amy) en masse as she did at one point last night, it does seem to signal to me that all may not be well, as some people have been indicating here. Again the announcers were commenting on lack of spirit and enthusiasm and Balcomb pretty much hinted at that in the post-game interview on WVXU.
I did not go to the game, so am unable to speak from first hand experience, but what I picked up listening to the radio broadcast was not encouraging to me. Again, I am not down on the team and will continue to be one of their biggest rooters. I have to believe they will get it together though I am getting less sure it will be this season. But I do have to tell it like I see it.

This was a good win against a solid team, but where was Katie Kreager. She played with no emotion and just seemed to lack the desire to compete in this game. In fact, to this observer, this has been her style the last several games. We need Katie to step it up and play the way she was earlier in the season...strong, aggressive and confident. She's good enough to star in the A-10. I have a similar concern with Colleen Yutes. 6'4" and never comes off the bench! What gives? One has to assume she's not putting forth the effort in practice. The A-10 starts a new season and we need everyone ready to play. I'm sure the coaches are aware of all these issues and addressing them. Let's get a win at Dayton. I'll be their cheering the team on.

- 2001 ends on a high note -- X-band '01, 18:38:27 12/31/01 Mon (215.cleveland-02rh15rt-oh.dial-access.att.net/12.87.146.215)
There are comebacks, and there are comebacks.
I didn't get to hear the game, but after looking at the recap and the play-by-play in the box score, it was shades of the win against St. Joe's back in 2000 during the A-10 Tournament. They were down 7 with 50 seconds to play, and with a trio of 3s from Piipari and Bell, they were able to tie the game while the Bulldogs went 2 for 4 behind the line during this span.
Amy Waugh, despite struggling from the field all day, hit 2 FTs to seal the win after Alexis Henderson rebounded a miss by MSU's star player LaToya Thomas.
And the results overall harkened on what I posted below - Bell, Piipari, and Henderson were solid all day, and Aida gave the Muskies a big spark off the bench with a career-high 10 points and 4 rebounds.
With Dayton clobbering Toledo on the road yesterday, it's going to make for a great A-10 opener on Wednesday.
Happy New Year!

- Mississippi State lost to UC 74-57, and I was there for the first half where UC got out to a 40-23 lead at the break. It looked like Mississippi State couldn't seem to run its offense effectively (sound familiar?) and they took a lot of quick shots without any passing. Still, LaToya Thomas is going to be a handful even though she was off today. I hate to play a team after a bad loss, and MSU is still 9-3 and has beaten some quality foes. I hope we look to run on them because their transition defense was poor in the first half today. We will also have our hands full with Tan White, a freshman who is big and can drive to the basket - she dropped 25 on UC. -- HomerCecil, 17:06:36 12/29/01 Sat (cvg-65-27-147-250.cinci.rr.com/65.27.147.250)

- Deja vu 1997-98? -- X-band '01, 04:10:03 12/28/01 Fri (134.cleveland-01rh15rt-oh.dial-access.att.net/12.87.144.134)
As bad as the record looks right now, it's not much different than that of the 1997-98 team. For those who have followed the program for a while, how many of you can remember the starting line of Kremer, Hughes, Stromberg, Hamberg, and Tuukkanen? This was a starting 5 that had little experience coming into that season, and has an eerie parallel to that of this year's starting 5.
The difference between then and now is, back then, Xavier had some players to call off the bench, Nicole was a backup guard for half of the year, Jen Phillips was slowly getting into the mold after open-heart surgery, and Kim Hotz provided minutes at just about any position between the point and the post.
This year? The starting 5 is starting to mold together (Waugh, Piipari, Bell, Henderson, and Kreager). Amy has the heart of a lion, despite what a certain poster asserts below. Reetta and Kate are two other core players that are putting up consistent numbers, for the most part. Shavon is slowly becoming an offensive weapon, and Alexis is making a campaign for A-10 Frosh of the Year.
But, where do you go from there? Outside of sharpshooter Ashleigh Cuncic, nobody else has stepped forward off the bench to take the burden off the starting 5. Even last year's big 3 had its share of a supporting cast and role players who knew what to do in a key situation. Foul trouble has been a consistent problem in the frontcourt, and without subs to be competitive, teams have punished Xavier down low.
Look at the turnovers as well - you simply can't turn the ball over 20 times a game and expect to win. Bad passing, offensive fouls, you name it - are all mental mistakes that need to be corrected down the road.
But here's the silver lining - the league as a whole is down this year. Only St. Joe's has looked solid - GW is struggling, and no other team has really shown that they're ready for postseason. The A-10 is looking at a single bid in March, and if the Muskies can overcome their rugged schedule and crank out wins in the A-10, the season will not be lost.
Phase 2 of the season is coming around, but damage control should soon be on the way.

- You've got to be out of your mind? this team has no heart -- Cranley, 09:38:57 12/28/01 Fri
- Let me ask you this - how many games have you been to this year? How many games have you seen the women, period? It's not a lack of heart, it's a lack of execution, plain and simple. (NT) -- X-band '01, 18:46:51 12/28/01 Fri
- I don't know how many games he has been to, but I have been to all. But I am not sure it is about how many games one has been too; some live outof the area and are unable to attend. Nicole Levandusky in the OSU tournament did speak of them appearing to play without heart and there have been rumors of some players not really getting the job done in practice. And from being at the games I seem to see them going backwards from even 3 or 4 games ago. So, as I said elsewhere, I am concerned and hope I am in wrong in this and that they will soon turn the corner and get it going. I still believe this is a talented team and this could be more than an "off year"! Did you see the games in Columbus or gotten back to campus? (NT) -- DAve, 10:32:02 12/29/01 Sat
- Unfortunately, I had business to take care of the weekend of the OSU tournament and didn't get to attend. I'm hoping to get in to see the Fordham and GW games (as well as the Fordham and Richmond men's games with the alumni band) in January. But, like I said above, I really don't think it's a question of heart - it's taken more time than I anticipated to mold together a new starting 5. Without a bench, we're in trouble. (NT) -- X-band '01, 12:19:00 12/29/01 Sat
- But, they could be a lot worse - Dayton is down to 8 healthy players on the roster right now. Cyndi Stull, Stefanie Miller, Sarah Schloss, and Angela Cape are all injured and/or redshirting this year. And keep in mind that Xavier's A-10 opener is at UD (like the men), so there's time to right the ship. (NT) -- X-band '01, 12:21:04 12/29/01 Sat
- Without a consistent starting five, we are also in trouble. And again, I think you missed my point. Considering the PLAY not the scores or results that I have SEEN this year, it concerns me, not that they are not developing as fast as hoped, but seem to be going backwards. That is my observation for what it is worth, and you are free not to agree. I am hopefull it is just a bit of a slump, but it is getting to be a pretty long one. I will be there tomorrow and they have yet another home game against a solid team to see if they can turn the corner. (NT) -- DAve, 10:58:51 12/30/01 Sun
- I am surprised that this team doesn't look to score more in transition. I mean I understand lots of teams know that's our strength (or has been in the past), but the team we have is pretty quick and our posts are fairly mobile. The half court game is not working too well so it would be nice to see things sped up. Also, I was expecting more 3's to be shot this year. But that's why I'm here and Melanie's coaching. -- HomerCecil, 17:41:49 12/28/01 Fri

- Sunday's game -- XU Joe, 09:01:55 12/26/01 Wed (spider-tp024.proxy.aol.com/152.163.204.184)
To me it seemed like the team just quit in the second half. They were not agressive on the boards. Several rebounds actually hit the floor. It was as if they were looking forward to their break. Unlike the men's team the women actually have the outside shooting to open the middle up. The inside and outside game should actually feed on each other. I think Alexis is a great talent, but she is a freshman. Kate needs to step it up. After all, she practiced against our starters all of last year.
The one thing that disapointed me was that I did not see our coaches making any adjustments during the game. I recall a previous game ( i think St. Francis) where at each time out one of the assistants was pulling Yukes aside and demonstrating rebounding techniques. This helped a lot in that game. I thin k that Sunday Kate needed a little help like this

Today's game was ugly. I don't know what the problem is, but the team is really out of it. I know they're young and inexperienced, but they were playing with more confidence earlier on. Too many turnovers and out of control plays, particularly toward the end of the game. Let's hope someone, or two, steps it up soon...or this season will be a disaster. Nevertheless, I'm with you all the way and will be at all the games. Keep your heads up and keep working.

Let's hope we can avoid another Cintas Center loss on Sunday against MTSU. The Blue Raiders are quite tough, so don't let their directional name fool you. They only lost to us by three lost year and have this year already pushed now-No. 9 Georgia to OT before losing. Mississippi State also presents a stiff challenge...We sure don't want to be 4-8 going into A10 play, although I LOVE the fact we're playing real teams this year. Perhaps this nonconference schedule last year would have translated into a 3 seed instead of a 4.

- Amy Waugh is SO CLUTCH! I How many times has she hit big shots for us, and she's not even played two full seasons. I also think that Alexis Henderson doesn't realize how good she is. She nearly jumped out of her skin when she got that layup and drew a foul late in the second half (or maybe it was in one of those OTs - I dunno I lost track of all the minutes!). UT is a solid team and Xavier continues to progress. We're not going to be like last year's team, but I still think there's a very good shot at the NCAA's - especially through the A10. GW and Temple still have to be the favorites, but gosh GW has looked bad. I'd say we'll get 11 or 12 conference wins. -- HomerCecil, 22:49:39 12/09/01 Sun (cvg-65-27-147-250.cinci.rr.com/65.27.147.250)

- As for the rest of the A-10, GW and St. Joe's will provide the biggest threats. The Hawks were unusually down last year, and they'll be back. GW, on the other hand, is simply struggling with a tough schedule - it's not unusual to see them start slow leading into A-10 play. Ironically, Xavier is really learning the price of upgrading their own schedule this season. (NT) -- X-band '01, 02:19:48 12/10/01 Mon

- Xavier tops Toledo in 3 OT's -- Matt Barber, 20:20:16 12/09/01 Sun (net206-164-036.xu.edu/206.21.164.36)
The Xavier women’s basketball team had never defeated Toledo in seven tries. On Sunday, it only took a school-record 108 points and 15 extra minutes for the Musketeers to get that monkey off their back.
XU moved its record to .500 (4-4) in topping the Rockets (3-4) 108-95 in the championship game of the Provident Bank Xavier University Invitational in the Cintas Center, and, for a team that has had problems finishing close games this season, took a big step forward.
“Obviously, this weekend was very character building,” said Xavier head coach Melanie Balcomb, whose Musketeers had just snapped a four-game skid the day before. “In one week, they came a long way.”
Forward Kate Kreager led all scorers with 27 points, but it was point guard Amy Waugh who did the clutch leading, tallying 15 of her 26 points in the overtime.
“She’s been trying to carry the team, to do too much,” said Balcomb. “Other players stepped up, and it let Amy just be herself.”
Freshman forward Alexis Henderson, after being fouled on her go-ahead lay-up with 21 seconds remaining in regulation, had a chance to give XU a three-point lead but could not finish the three-point play.
The Rockets then looked to get the ball in the hands of guard Courtney Risinger, their best shooter. Her 16-footer was off the mark, but forward Teresa Kahle was there for the game-tying put-back, and the contest moved into the first overtime, tied at 69.
At the start of the extra frame, the young Xavier team looked like it was beginning to tighten up while UT looked loose, scoring the first seven points of the overtime.
Then Waugh took over. She fired a three-pointer from two feet behind the arc at the top of the key that lit a fire under the Musketeers. The defense clamped down, stopped the Rockets, and moved the ball to guard Reetta Piipari, who drove to the hoop for a lay-up, putting the score at 76-74, Toledo.
Then guard Shavon Bell snagged the most important of her career-high five steals, taking the ball away from the UT point guard as she crossed the half-court line, and streaked all alone to the hoop for a game-tying lay-up with 52 seconds to go in the OT.
Toledo countered with two points and then fouled Waugh the next time down the court. Waugh missed the first free-throw, but hit the second, leaving Xavier back by one with less than 30 seconds to go.
Henderson immediately fouled UT’s Risinger on the inbounds pass, and Risinger only made one of her two free-throws.
Waugh drew a foul, and, this time, hit both of her shots to knot the game at 79 and send it into the second overtime.
Toledo and Xavier exchanged hoops to open the second OT, but a three from Waugh put XU up by one. A nifty inside basket by Kreager gave the Musketeers a three-point lead, but Toledo was far from finished.
A jumper from center Melantha Herron closed the gap to one for the Rockets, but it proved to be the final two of the team-high 24 points that Herron would score as she fouled-out moments later, putting Henderson at the line for XU with another chance to move the lead to three.
Henderson missed the first, but converted on the second free-throw, keeping the Musketeers ahead by two, 87-85. Henderson then fouled Toledo’s Tia Davis on the next possession, and Davis knocked down both free throws to again tie the contest.
Xavier ran its offense well on its next possession, and the ball found Kreager in the paint for a lay-up and the foul, but again, a missed free-throw kept XU from extending the lead past two.
A Toledo lay-up evened the score one more time at 89 with 33 seconds left in the second overtime, and Waugh’s foul on the shot gave the Rockets a chance to move ahead, but it was the visitor’s turn to miss a key free-throw.
The Musketeers had the whole shot clock to work for the final shot in the contest, and Waugh waited patiently at the top of the key for the clock to tick down. Then she drove the lane, hitting a go-ahead lay-up with just over five seconds remaining.
But it was just enough time for Toledo to inbound, call timeout and run a nifty give-and-go on the next inbound play that tied the game and sent it into a Xavier-record third overtime.
The 91-all tie was the fifteenth of the contest, but it would be its last. Running on fresh legs against a winded foe, XU put 11 unanswered points on the board to start the final overtime before UT responded with just two.
“We practice three hours a day, and it helps us,” said Waugh.
“We had to keep running, we knew they were tired,” added Henderson.
Toledo attempted to foul their way back into the contest, but the Musketeers were 8-8 from the free-throw line in the last overtime.
Numerous career-highs were set by Xavier in the 275 minutes of basketball the game lasted. Kreager’s 27 points, Waugh’s 26 and Henderson’s 19 were all new career marks for the respective players. The 11 rebounds Henderson pulled down were also a new career-high for the freshman who recorded her first double-double with the effort.
Kreager grabbed 10 rebounds for her fourth career double-double. Waugh dished eight assists to lead XU in that department, and Piipari was close behind with seven. Piipari tallied 17 points and Bell 18 to round out the five Musketeers scoring in double figures for the contest.
The Xavier bench only added one point in 34 minutes of play, but the trio of Ashleigh Cuncic, Colleen Yukes and Nikki Wells contributed quality minutes to give the starters, who played the entire 15 minutes of overtime, some well-deserved rest.
“I don’t think our bench hurt us,” said Balcomb. “We got good minutes from them, and, in the overtime, I just went with what was working.”
Herron’s 24 points and 11 boards led Toledo, and Risinger and Kahle added 19 and 16 points respectively to the Rockets’ cause.
Xavier used a 6-2 run at the close of the first half to take a 37-36 halftime lead into the locker room, but fell behind by as many as seven with just over 10 minutes to go in the second half before regaining and then losing a two-point lead in the last three minutes, setting the stage for the overtime bonanza.
Howard’s Andrea Gardner, St. Francis’s Sami Allison, Toledo’s Herron and Kreager from XU were named to the all-tournament team, and Xavier’s Waugh was tabbed as the tournament MVP.
SFU topped Howard 87-67 in the consolation game before the championship.

- XU snaps four-game slide by topping Red Flash -- Matt Barber, 17:20:09 12/08/01 Sat (net206-164-036.xu.edu/206.21.164.36)
The next game plan for the Xavier women’s basketball team might include some deep breathing and meditation.
“We play great when we’re relaxed,” said head coach Melanie Balcomb following her team’s 79-65 victory over St. Francis (Penn.) in the first contest of the Provident Bank Xavier Invitational in the Cintas Center Saturday afternoon that ended a four-game skid.
“We play great for the middle 20 minutes of a game, when we’re relaxed,” Balcomb continued. “But we start off slow and finish slow.”
True enough, the contest began with the Musketeers (3-4) spotting a four-point lead to the Red Flash (2-4) as XU guards Amy Waugh, Shavon Bell and Reetta Piipari all missed their first shots.
It was freshman forward Alexis Henderson who broke the ice for XU with a lay-up nearly 2:30 into the contest, but that basket sparked a 12-4 run for Xavier over the next 4:37.
Xavier’s momentum began to slip away, however, when center Kate Kreager picked up her second foul of the game and headed to the bench with 11:50 left in the first half.
Balcomb called on reserve center Colleen Yukes, who was coming off the best game of her short career a week before against Cincinnati, and, again, Yukes responded by providing solid post play on offense and defense.
“Colleen is getting more confidence,” said Balcomb. “She’s working hard and getting aggressive.”
With 9:13 until halftime, SFU tied the score at 20 with a three, but Waugh responded for the Musketeers shortly after with a three of her own, and Xavier never trailed again, building the lead to as much as 10, thanks to five-straight points from freshman forward Nikki Wells, before taking a 39-30 score into the locker room at the end of the half.
Still relaxed, Xavier started the second half playing very well, building the lead to 17 on a three from Piipari less than five minutes in, and pushing that margin to 25 points with accurate outside shots and free throws with just over 9:30 to go in the game.
Then the tightness returned for XU as the young squad struggled with how to finish the contest.
“Game experience is the issue,” said Balcomb. “We’ll improve as our young kids get more.”
Slowly, St. Francis chipped away at the lead, getting as close as 13 with under three minutes remaining, but the gap was too wide for the Red Flash to overcome completely.
Waugh finished with a game-high 16 points and eight assists. Bell added 14 points and five rebounds, while Piipari contributed 11 and seven assists.
Despite the foul trouble, Kreager scored 10 points and has now reached double figures in every game this season for XU. While Kreager was on the bench, Henderson, Yukes and Wells played solidly in the frontcourt as all three set or tied career-highs in points.
“As a team, we have confidence in them,” said Kreager of the trio.
Yukes tallied eight points, six more than her previous best, on a 4-5 shooting day over 20 minutes. Henderson tied her best effort with eight points and was one board shy of her best rebounding mark by pulling down a team-high six. Wells’s five-point burst at the end of the first half pushed her past her previous best of two, as she played very aggressively despite, listed at 5-10, being Xavier’s shortest post player.
“[Wells] posts bigger than any player on our team,” said Balcomb. “She’s a lot more aggressive and not afraid. Height’s overrated.”
What’s not overrated, though, is experience, and the young Musketeers, while building the bank, are doing so slowly.
“The veterans are taking what we work on in scrimmages into the games with them,” said Balcomb, “but our freshman are still working on taking it from the drill to a five-on-five situation in practice. They get in the game and forget the plays; they’re still a step behind.
“We’ll turn that around. We had our best week of practice by far, and we’ll be better.”
Xavier will play in Sunday’s championship game against the winner of the Howard-Toledo game that followed Saturday’s victory. The championship game should start around 3 p.m.
XU has never won in seven tries against Toledo, which is coached by former Musketeer coach Mark Ehlen.

- UC tops in Cinci for sixth-straight year -- Matt Barber, 18:29:34 12/02/01 Sun (net206-164-036.xu.edu/206.21.164.36)
Xavier’s main hurdle to clear this season may be its own inexperience. For the fourth straight game, a lack of game experience prevented the Musketeers (2-4) from executing down the stretch to put an opponent away as Cincinnati was able to outlast XU, 62-56, in the Cintas Center Sunday afternoon.
The Bearcats (5-0) are now the winners of the last six women’s cross-town shootouts, defeating the best Xavier team in school history last year, and topping possibly the youngest in XU history this year.
In one of the more physical games either team will play this season, the post players of UC, led by freshman Debbie Merrill’s 22 points and 13 rebounds, exploited Xavier’s lack of frontcourt depth by getting Musketeer center Kate Kreager in foul trouble and then pounding the ball inside.
XU, losers of four-straight for the first time since January of 1997, overcame a seven-point halftime deficit by opening the second period with a 19-6 run. Working the ball inside to Kreager and complementing it with accurate outside shooting, including two straight threes from guard Reetta Piipari, the Musketeer offense looked tough to stop as the score stood 45-39 with less than 10 minutes to play, but then its inexperience resurfaced.
With two freshmen and a sophomore who played only 42 minutes last season getting large amounts of playing time, XU missed four shots, turned the ball over twice and committed four fouls in the next 5:54 during which Cincinnati tallied 12 points and Kreager had to go to the bench with her fourth foul.
A lay-up by guard Amy Waugh broke the scoreless spell, and seldom-used center Colleen Yukes, a sophomore who totaled a career-high 23 minutes, played admirably in place of Kreager, but Xavier was then down 51-47.
“We got our lead and stopped executing,” said Xavier head coach Melanie Balcomb. “We have a lot of inexperience on the floor, and no one wants to step up.”
“We just fell apart,” said Piipari.
The Musketeers would get back within four, 58-54, in the final minute, but Cincinnati made enough free throws to hold on to the contest.
“I was very pleased with how our kids responded down six,” said Cincinnati head coach Laurie Pirtle. “We pulled it back together.”
Cincinnati began the contest with a 10-2 run over the game’s first 3:47 as the Musketeer offense struggled to execute against the Bearcat’s tight man-to-man defense. UC pushed the lead to 12, 22-10, before Xavier responded with an 8-0 run, fueled by threes from Waugh and Piipari, to cut the margin to four.
UC extended their lead back to eight with two straight baskets, before two Waugh free throws and a lay-up by forward Alexis Henderson brought it back to four.
The Bearcats ended the first half on a 5-2 run to carry a 33-26 lead into the locker room.
Merrill’s double-double for UC led all players in both categories. She was followed by center Tammy Douglass’s 13 points and five boards.
For XU, Waugh had team-high totals of 16 points, nine rebounds and five assists while playing nearly the entire contest with a fire and desire that was just not enough to will Xavier to a victory. Piipari and guard Shavon Bell added 12 points each, and Kreager had tallied 10 before she fouled-out with 2:50 left in the game.
Xavier outrebounded Cincinnati, 36-34, but turned the ball over 20 times, seven more than the Bearcats. XU was also cold shooting for long stretches of the contest, ending the game at just over 40 percent from the field.
“We need to become more of a team, work even harder than we’ve been working, and play as a team,” said Piipari of how Xavier would deal with this series of setbacks.
UC outscored the Musketeers 30-22 in the paint, and converted Xavier’s turnovers into 20 points.
“Our practices are not were they should be. We have a lot to teach, on and off the court,” said a frustrated Balcomb after the contest.

And, without further ado, here are the matchups for today's 24th meeting between both schools:
POINT GUARD
K.B. (Kristen) Sharp will start at the point for the Bearcats. The junior PG has averaged 6.3 PPG and 6.8 APG in 4 games so far this season. She has only committed 7 turnovers so far this season, and recently had a UC record 13 assists in a win over Robert Morris. She is a good defender and can play against either of Xavier's starting guards.
Amy Waugh mans the point for Xavier. Since she reclaimed her role as the starting PG, Waugh has averaged 11.8 PPG and 7.6 APG in 5 games this season. She is a smart floor leader, and will play as minutes as necessary during the game. She has played all 40 minutes in 3 games so far this season, and even played nearly 50 minutes in Xavier's double-OT loss to UC two years ago. As long as she can limit turnovers, she'll be fine.
Advantage: XU
SHOOTING GUARD
Valerie King wasted no time last year in establishing a starting role and a berth on C-USA's All-Rookie team last season. She was a preseason 1st-team All-CUSA pick this year, and for good reason. She has thus far averaged 15.8 PPG and 2.3 RPG in this young season. She torched the Muskies in last year's meeting with 26 points, including a 4-6 mark behind the arc last year. She's slightly more turnover-prone than her backcourt mate, but is UC's deadliest shooter. Her defense is still a work-in-progress.
Reetta Piipari is Xavier's answer at the SG slot, and has thus far averaged 12.8 PPG and 5.2 APG this season. Like King, Piipari is also an excellent shooter from the court, but she is extremely prone to turnovers against pressure defense, and UC will be playing her closely, especially in situations where she runs the point. So far, her outside shooting has been stellar - she has shot at a 12-for-26 clip so far this season.
Advantage: UC
SMALL FORWARD
Brittani Young is another sophomore for UC that saw action in all of UC's games last season, and broke into the starting lineup for UC's last 10 games last season and has started ever since. Her offensive numbers aren't gaudy (1.5 PPG, 2.8 RPG), but she is another defensive stopper in the mold of UC. Her minutes have fluctuated with the quality of opponent - she saw a lot of action against Dayton and Middle Tennessee State, but was used sparingly against Robert Morris and St. Francis. Her duty will be to keep Shavon Bell in check.
Bell, Xavier's lone senior, will match up against Young for most of the game. After being a key bench contributor last season, she has improved her offensive numbers considerably this season (11.8 PPG, 4.4 RPG). She has also improved her shooting range, and having as many offensive weapons as possible will be critical for Xavier's success. Bell is a gnat on defense - she has the speed to go into transition on steals and loose balls.
Advantage: XU
POWER FORWARD
In what should be a matchup of highly-touted freshmen, Debbie Merrill will play the 4 spot to start the game; she will also move over to center in other game situations. Merrill is off to a fast start this season, averaging 16.8 PPG and 8.3 RPG in her first season in a UC uniform. Merrill was the 5th-highest recruited center in the country last season, and she will be a serious two-way threat in this contest as well.
Alexis Henderson moved into Xavier's starting lineup during the holiday tournament at Maine. Although she is Xavier's only starter not to average double figures in points per game, her averages of 6.6 PPG and 4.2 RPG are tops among XU's freshmen this year. She'll be at a size disadvantage against Merrill, but her defense of her will be critical to Xavier's success.
Advantage: UC
CENTER
Tammy Douglass is UC's leading rebounder (8.3 RPG) and 3rd-highest scorer (14.3 PPG) so far this season. She is the lone senior on UC's starting 5, and returns after having started each and every game last season. She will start most of the game in the post, but she could switch defensive assignments with Merrill if the need arises.
Kate Kreager is now showing more signs of potential when she was highly recruited by Xavier. As a sophomore, Kreager is leading the Muskies in scoring and rebounding (16.2 PPG and 5.8 RPG). Clearly she is slowly mastering her finishing moves in the paint, although her defensive intensity will have to step up if she is to keep the UC posts in check for this game.
Advantage: XU
BENCH
Laura Wilder is UC's first player off the bench, and will play mostly to spell Young relief on the wing. She was UC's leading rebounder the past two seasons, although she has been playing with a broken hand so far this season. Merelenea Dozier is a 3-point specialist who can give spot minutes to give UC scoring punch when needed. Carolyn Alexander and Leslie Knoch are other players who can spell spot duty as well.
Xavier's bench isn't as deep - Ashleigh Cuncic (an outside-shooting specialist) is one of two other players to have seen action in every game thus far. Aida Sarajilia can spell relief for either Henderson or Kreager for defensive purposes, and can also give starter's minutes should either player get into foul trouble.
Advantage: UC
On paper, the two teams look fairly evenly matched, although UC has had the early 4-0 mark due to their defensive pressure. This is due to Coach Laurie Pirtle's (11-6 vs. XU) system that she learned as a player at Ohio State and also utilized as head coach at Capital University in Columbus before coming to the Queen City. Xavier, on the other hand, is coming off of 3 consecutive losses, mainly because of a combination of outstanding defense by their opponents and a high mark of turnovers by Xavier thus far this season.
Since the Muskies are unlikely to win the battle of the boards against UC, it is critical that they have a good shooting performance and a low turnover output. They'll need the A-games of Waugh, Piipari, and Kreager for this one. For UC, they need to establish their inside game early and often. King and Merrill will be the X-factors for UC in this game.
But, Xavier has a 22-game home winning streak in their favor, and have not lost at home since moving into the Cintas Center. A pro-Xavier crowd and big-game experience will be the deciding factor in this one. Look for Xavier to break their 5-game losing streak against the team from Clifton this season.
Prediction: Xavier 65, Cincinnati 62

- Xavier runs to win against Akron -- Matt Barber, 22:27:41 11/19/01 Mon (net206-164-036.xu.edu/206.21.164.36)
Despite being a young team just starting what head coach Melanie Balcomb has described as a “learning year,” Xavier showed the distance between a major program like itself, and a struggling mid-major program like Akron. Using its superior speed, strength and athleticism, XU completely outclassed the Zips, 90-44, in the Cintas Center Monday night.
The Musketeers ran their fast-break offense very well, and Akron could not keep up with it, let alone stop it.
“Our goal was to rebound and run,” said Balcomb. “Their weakness is transition defense, and their weakness is our strength.”
Xavier opened the contest on an 8-0 run, and soon after the score was 24-7. At halftime, the score stood at 51-20 for XU.
Xavier’s transition game was not as dependent on steals, as it was on UA’s 19 turnovers and 47 missed shots (out of 64 for a .266 shooting average). Those missed shots were quickly pulled down by the Musketeers, who outrebounded Akron 53-30.
Many of the outlet passes on the fast break found senior guard Shavon Bell running her lane ahead of the defense. She cashed-in for a career-high 23 points, which surpassed her former high of 12, set in XU’s previous game against Indiana State.
Bell is making the most of moving into the starting five, after filling a bench-role last season.
“I’m comfortable,” she said. “I was really prepared by last year, and worked on my outside game this summer.”
Something else Bell has excelled at so far is rebounding. Her seven boards on Monday are also a career-high, also breaking her previous high of six from the ISU game on Friday. At only 5-7, Bell is an outstanding leaper and can play taller than she is.
Sophomore forward Kate Kreager continued her excellent start by following-up Friday’s 25-point performance with a 17-point and 11-rebound double-double.
Junior guard Amy Waugh added 13 points and seven assists, and junior guard Reetta Piipari contributed eight points, eight assists and six rebounds.
The entire Musketeer bench was able to play, and score, as freshman guards Dani Statuto and Kim Neidermeyer were able to record their first official collegiate points.
Freshman forward Alexis Henderson was impressive in her 12 minutes, scoring eight and grabbing six rebounds. She may play her way into the starting lineup before long.
“Our kids really played hard all game,” said Balcomb. “Our defense has been good. We’re pressuring the ball more and creating easy baskets on steals.”
And easy baskets lead to easy wins.

Nice to see the young team stay composed when ISU challenged them in the second half on ISU's court. Granted, the Sycamores are not exactly a powerhouse, but it's still a nice start for the season. Teams are really going to start honing in on Kreager, though, so we need to hit those threes and it would be nice if Henderson could develop into a complimentary post player to force the defense to respect much of the team. I'm looking forward to Akron Monday...Should be another W.

- Kreager breaks out, XU comeback falls short -- Matt Barber, 19:38:56 11/10/01 Sat (cvg-65-26-154-101.cinci.rr.com/65.26.154.101)
Xavier suffered its second loss of the preseason, 88-85, to the Reebok Lady Stars on Saturday afternoon in the Cintas Center, but sophomore forward Kate Kreager put on a show, scoring career-highs of 33 points and 13 rebounds.
The coaches had been waiting for it, the game-performance that would establish Kreager as a top post-player.
“Kate has been phenomenal in every single practice this year,” said XU head coach Melanie Balcomb. “She’s played so hard, we’ve been waiting for her to have a break-out game.”
Kreager was 12-16 from the floor in the contest, and missed on just two of her 11 trips to the free-throw line. She scored 24 points in the second half as the Musketeers battled back from a 15-point deficit, only to fall three point short when a buzzer-beating attempt missed the rim to end the second half.
Xavier looked like it might cruise as it jumped out to an 11-0 lead to start the game, but the Lady Stars, surprised at first by XU’s speed, played sure-and-steady, tying the contest at 27 with 8:28 remaining in the first half. The teams exchanged baskets until the end of the half, when the Lady Stars held a 45-42 lead.
The second half was nearly all Kreager for the Musketeers, but the Lady Stars just kept padding their lead, pushing the difference to 15 with 6:25 to go in the game.
Junior point-guard Amy Waugh hit a three-pointer, the two teams exchanged free throws, then junior guard Reetta Piipari hit a three.
Kreager made a lay up, and, on Xavier’s next possession, sophomore forward Aida Sarajlija was fouled on a wide-open look inside. She converted on both attempts, moving XU within five, 84-79, with less than two minutes remaining.
The Musketeers and Lady Stars both made four free throws each, and Waugh hit a short jumper, but Piipari’s attempt at a buzzer-beater missed the mark in an attempt to send the game into overtime.
“We know we can come back now,” said Balcomb. “It’s good for a team this young to know that.”
Piipari hit three threes on her way to 11 points and six assists, and Waugh distributed eight assists. Sarajlija had her second-straight solid game, scoring 10 points and pulling down five boards in 24 minutes of play.
“Out biggest improvement was our overall effort as a team, our chemistry, our communication and offensive execution,” said Balcomb. “We showed a lot, that we’re a team that won’t quit.”
Freshman Ashleigh Cuncic scored eight points in 13 minutes, including a three, playing as a guard. She seemed much less nervous than she did in her college debut in the first exhibition game.
The big story was Kreager’s explosive performance.
“It was good to get ‘the break-out game,’” said Kreager who attributed her success in the contest to Xavier’s balanced offense that finds the open player.
“She earned that game,” said Balcomb. “She’s a gamer now.”
The Musketeers have six days to get ready for their season opener at Indiana State on Friday, and if they show the kind of improvement they made from the first exhibition to this contest, they should open with a win.
“We’ve improved a lot,” said Piipari. “We’re going the right way. We’re not there yet, but we’ll be there.”

- Experinced AIA shows young Musketeers a few tricks -- Matt Barber, 22:13:34 11/01/01 Thu (net206-164-036.xu.edu/206.21.164.36)
Other than junior guards Amy Waugh and Reetta Piipari, the Xavier women’s basketball team entered its first preseason contest with a team full of questions, many of which were answered despite the 74-67 setback the Musketeers suffered to Athletes In Action at the Cintas Center Thursday night.
With 11 players with two or less years of experience (five of them freshmen), XU was as much looking for an identity as it was for a tune-up against AIA. What they discovered was that they can still run, they can still hit the three, and they can still score inside, even against a team of professionals and near-professionals who have all seen four years of college ball.
With a starting five that consisted of Waugh, Piipari, senior guard Shavon Bell and sophomore forwards Aida Sarajlija and Kate Kreager, Xavier head coach Melanie Balcomb was counting on experience in the program (albeit little) to lead the way until the newcomers have mastered the learning curve.
“We need our returning players, even those who didn’t play much last year, to step up,” said Balcomb.
Two of them did.
Sarajlija, having moved to the forward position after spending last season as a guard, was 7-9 from the floor, including a three, and added two free throws to lead XU with 17 points.
Bell, the only Musketeer who consistently hit her three-point shots (she was 3-6), was close behind with 15 points, and Bell and Sarajlija each grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
Waugh recorded a double-double, 10 points and 10 assists, but Piipari’s shot was off all night, as only two of her 13 attempts were good.
AIA’s zone defense and better size kept the Musketeers from scoring often inside, and they especially controlled Kreager. A good shooting team from the outside that usually breaks zones down, XU hit only 8 of 33 three-point attempts.
“We let them take us out of our game with their zone defense,” said Waugh. “Instead of running and attacking it, we walked the ball up the court and let them set up.”
Xavier also did not defend particularly well or rebound (AIA outrebounded XU 40-33)..
“We need to focus on the defensive end, and check-out. They took us out of our offense and we didn’t do the same to them,” said Waugh.
The freshmen played well, considering it was their first college action.
“Some of the players were so nervous,” said Balcomb. “A game like this gets a lot of jitters out.”
Freshman guard Ashleigh Cuncic recorded 17 minutes of playing time, and only scored on one of her eight shots (all from behind the arc). More importantly she didn’t seem lost in the offense, and was able to grab three boards and dish a pair of assists.
Forward Alexis Henderson led the frosh in scoring with four points, showing the athletic post moves against taller and more experienced players that will make her a quality asset this season.
“We just need to keep building. I think we’re going in the right direction,” said Balcomb.
“We’ll be better. We need more time,” added Sarajlija.

- With MM being out of action for a while, I'll post women's stories here. -- Matt Barber, 14:47:03 11/01/01 Thu (NoHost/66.144.8.174)
Here's a season preview:
Don't ask Xavier's head women's basketball coach, Melanie Balcomb, if this will be a rebuilding year.
"I would never use that word. I can't stand that word," she says.
So what will the 2001-2002 season be for the Musketeers?
"A learning year," says Balcomb.
After losing four starters and a key bench player to graduation after last season's Elite Eight run through the NCAA Tournament, it certainly will be a learning year for defending Atlantic 10 champion XU.
Gone are guards Nicole Levandusky and Jennifer Parr. Gone are post players Taru Tuukkanen and Jennifer Phillips. Gone are a laundry list of Xavier records and the 75 percent of last year's offense they represented.
And so, the curse of a senior-laden team one season is that the next year's team is short on experience. How short? Only one player on the roster, junior guard Reetta Piipari, has had two full years in the program heading into this season. Just behind her is junior point guard Amy Waugh, who missed most of last season with a leg injury after starting her freshman year.
Piipari and Waugh will start, alternating between the point and shooting guard positions. Both are excellent passers who know how to find an open teammate (Piipari's 8.3 assists per game led the nation last year), and both are very accurate three-point shooters. If the lane is open, they can finish a drive, but their height (Waugh is 5-6, Piipari 5-7) means they are often challenging taller players if they venture under the hoop.
Joining them in the starting five will be sophomore forward Kate Kreager, who averaged just over 10 minutes per game spelling Tuukkanen and Phillips last year. She averaged just 3.1 points and 2.2 rebounds per game, but showed that she has the potential to be one of the best forwards in the conference.
The final two starting spots are up for grabs in the preseason. Balcomb tends to favor upperclassmen initially, until a freshman beats them out, so look for some of last year's inexperienced bench to be starting as the season commences.
Colleen Yukes, a 6-4 sophomore center, and Aida Sarajilija, a 6-1 sophomore forward, are the leading candidates to join Kreager in the frontcourt. Yukes brings size, but is probably the slowest member of the team, and Balcomb likes her players to be able to run the floor well.
Sarajilija played last season as a guard when injuries and transfers thinned Xavier's backcourt, but she has returned to her natural forward position this year. How quickly she returns to form in the paint will be the deciding factor between her and Yukes, but practicing as a guard last year has made Sarajilija the best ball-handling post, as well as an outside-shooting threat.
Senior Shavon Bell, a transfer from Cincinnati State last year, is the only other returning guard. Quick as lightning and defensively stifling, Bell could start if Balcomb opts for a running game and defense over athletic power in the early stages of the season. Bell is more of a slasher, driving to the hoop, than a pure outside shooter, but she is still a threat from behind the arc. However, at 5-7, a Xavier backcourt of Waugh, Piipari and Bell will be undersized against just about every team XU faces.
Of the five newcomers to this year's team, two stand out as probable starters as the season progresses, 5-10 guard Ashleigh Cuncic and 6-0 forward Alexis Henderson. Both are very athletic, and have been making progress in practice picking up Balcomb's offensive system. Cuncic is a talented outside shooter, and Henderson, although a little undersized in the post, plays bigger than she is.
The other freshmen are 5-6 guard Dani Statuto, 5-10 small forward Nikki Wells and 6-0 guard Kim Neidermeyer. Wells is the most athletic of the three, but she was nursing a sore knee during the Musketeer Madness festivities, and will probably drop down the depth chart because of it. Statuto is a shooting guard who averaged 24 ppg as a senior last year in high school, and Neidermeyer brings size to the wing and an accurate three-point shot.
Things may start slowly for this year's team until the freshmen and sophomores gain experience, but expect Cuncic and Henderson to be starting before the conference schedule begins in January.
The practice jerseys say "new team, same dream." Speed and defense will be the strength of this new team, as they lack the size and experience of the old one, but though the dream may remain the same, the results most likely will not.
George Washington is the team to beat again in the A-10, a spot it enjoyed until the past few seasons. Xavier should still finish second in the West Division, but Duquesne and Dayton will not be far behind. In the East, Temple and St. Joseph's will be the division leaders.
Balcomb said this season will be a learning year, and the success of the Musketeers depends on how fast the freshmen and sophomores learn how to play. This team is young. "As young as it gets," says Balcomb.
They will have to grow up quickly if they want to achieve their dream.

Looks like a team that should give our young team a good test tonight. Exhibitions are simply measures of where you are at this point in the pre-season and mean little. Do you recall our Elite Eight team lost one of our exhibitions last season. Granted it appeared they brought their own refs.
Hope to see a good turnout, but I have my doubts it being the first exhibition.

Like many posters on this board, I was eagerly anticipating the unveiling of the 2001-2002 Muskies, and had to be impressed with both the vets and the newcomers.
Amy Waugh- Is there anything she can't do? I would guess that she felt guilty by scoring 8 today (at least during the women's scrimmage). She clearly has the PG mentality needed to keep the team in the hunt for the A-10.
Reetta Piipari- Ditto, only it will be interesting to see how she readjusts to playing predominantly shooting guard. Her PG skills will be needed when Amy rides the bench.
Kate Kreager - If today was an indication, she is clearly going to be a force to be reckoned with in the frontcourt. For those who read the Enquirer this morning, she shot 65% from the field last year, and was a great 2-way presence. Even when the starters were scrimmaging against the guys, Katie seemed to be doing really well on the defensive side of the ball.
Shavon Bell - She looked steady at the 3G/SF slot, particularly her defense. She also slashed to the hole a number of times, and it will be interesting to see how often she becomes an offensive option this year.
Colleen Yukes - If the scrimmage against the guys was any indicator, she may start at center - at least early on in the season. She did an okay job in terms of boxing out and going after the glass, but had trouble at times finishing baskets on the offensive end.
Aida Sarajilia - Her defense was also markedly improved; her speed down the court in transition seemed to be something she worked on during the off-season. It was evident that she has the green light to take the outside shot, but it was off today. And yet, she was mature enough not to let it get her down; she was still wreaking havoc down low in the paint.
And there were two freshmen that showed that they may see significant PT early:
Alexis Henderson - She almost singlehandedly kept the White team in the women's scrimmage today. She was the only player on her squad to score in double figures, and has quick enough hands that she can force an occasional steal and kick the transition game in gear.
Ashleigh Cuncic - Definitely the fastest of the freshmen out there today. Actual speed and game speed are different entities; she showed many opportunities to be disruptive on defense. She wasn't too bad on the offensive side of the ball either; she had a hot hand from behind the arc.
Kim Neidermayer and Dani Statuto also saw action in the second scrimmage; they seemed to be having the tougher time adjusting to the system, though both showed flashes of potential during the scrimmage. Nikki Wells only played when the guys were scrimmaging the gals in the first part of the scrimmage.
As for the starters, they went down as : PG-Waugh, SG-Piipari, 3G/SF-Bell, PF-Kreager, C-Yukes.
During the Blue-White scrimmage, here were the teams: (Blue won over White 43-23)
B-Waugh(PG), Cuncic(SG), Neidermayer(SF), Sarajilia(SF), Kreager(C)
W-Piipari(PG), Statuto(SG), Bell(SF), Henderson(PF), Yukes(C)
For those who did make it (amidst a sparse crowd), what were your thoughts?

Now that there have been a few practices, there is hopefully a little more information available about this year's prospects. The excellence of the coaching staff is a given as is the heady play of our back court starters.
Have any of Coach Balcomb's practices been open to the public? If so, have any of you out there viewed them?
What comments are the returning players making to classmates, etc. about the new Musketeer women?
I hope to be joined by a few other members of my extended family at this coming Sunday's Madness.

This year's version of the Lady Musketeers will obviously be both younger and less experienced than that of last year, especially up front. I know virtually nothing about our incoming new players. Furthermore, the loss of Lowery and Hawkins may take a toll mainly because of their association with the program last year and the influence of the four great players who departed.
It is equally obvious that Piipari and Waugh will rotate between the PG and SG positions and be on the floor for 35-40 minutes each game (barring injuries and foul trouble). I'd also assume that Kate Kreager will play a lot of minutes at both the C and PF positions. Is either Colleen Yukes or Aida Sarajlija ready to take charge of the other post position, or will they share that position based on who's hot or playing more intelligently at the time? That leaves the 3 (QF) position to fill. Is Coach B likely to go with a 3-guard attack or stick to the 2-guard backcourt and 3 big bodies up front? Is there anybody out there who is watching the players work in the gym now? Who's looking good? What surprises might we expect? Are any of the newcomers likely to have an impact this year?
Thanks for any information you on-campus folks can provide.

I'd just like to congratulate Nicole Levandusky on being a part of the WNBA champion L.A. Sparks. They are an incredible team, and Nicole managed to make the deepest roster in the league. On any other team her minutes would have been significantly higher, but she seemed to always have a good attitude and I'm sure she worked the starters hard in practice. Hi everyone, I'm new to these boards, but it seems like there are some dedicated fans here, so I think I might be coming here more often. Well, to tell you a little about myself, I live in Cincinnati, and I've been a big fan of the Ladies since the 99-2000 season. I was one of the XU fans in attendance at many regular season games, the first two rounds, and the Sweet 16 game, (which, by the way, was the best basketball game I've ever seen) but I could not stay for the Purdue game. As you can tell from my screen name, I think the XU women will 4 ever dominate the opposition (especially the vols), and a couple of my favorite players are Taru and Aida. I'm looking forward to speaking with you all about the women, and hope you're willing to do the same.
Peace,

Returning starters: 2
Departing seniors: 5
Today's installment takes a look at the two-time defending A-10 champs, the Xavier Musketeers.
SG Dani Statuto - Listed at 5'6", she finished in 2nd place in scoring at Con-Val HS in Peterborough, New Hampshire. Recruited primarily as a point guard, Statuto earned 1st-team All-State honors in New Hampshire in her junior and senior seasons. And much like past Xavier recruits under Coach Balcomb, she has 3-point range.
G Ashleigh Cuncic - Listed at 5'10", she averaged 20 PPG, 4 RPG, and 8 RPG as a junior at St. Mary's HS in Carlisle, Ontario (Canada). She was MVP on a team that had won OFSAA championships in 1998 and 1999. According to Coach Balcomb's assessment, she also has 3-point range and great defensive skills.
SG/3G Nikki Wells - Listed at 5'10", she averaged 12.7 PPG, 9.2 RPG, and 3 steals per game as a junior at Garfield HS in Woodbridge, Virginia. She was on her All-District, Area, and Region teams as a junior, as well as an honorable mention Street and Smith's All-American going into her senior year. She played mostly inside during her HS career.
SG Kim Neidermayer - Listed at 6'0", she averaged 17.8 PPG and 10 RPG as a junior at Eastlake North HS in Cleveland, Ohio. She won 1st-team honors from the Premier Athletic Conference and The Plain Dealer (the Cleveland newspaper), as well as Honorable Mention All-Ohio honors. Balcomb lists her outside shooting and passing as Kim's top assets.
SF Alexis Henderson - Listed at 6'0", she averaged 16.7 PPG and 10.6 RPG as a junior at Ursuline Academy in Wilmington, Delaware. She was 1st-team in her conference and 2nd-team All-Delaware that season as well. She was recruited for her post moves and, yes, 3-point shooting as well.
With 5 seniors having graduated from the program, Xavier heavily recruited players that will fit into a 3-guard offense. Although none of the players are currently above 6'0", they all have outside shooting, speed, and good defensive abilities, which are elements that have become trademarks of Xavier teams in the past 4 years. Although Xavier has only one senior (Shavon Bell) for this season, they'll be wise to begin grooming a PG for the future, since Xavier will have 3 juniors on the roster for 2001-2002.

U to name Ball State coach as new women's basketball coach
Jason Wolf
Star Tribune
Saturday, June 9, 2001
The University of Minnesota will hire Ball State coach Brenda Oldfield as women's basketball coach, the Star Tribune has learned.
The university has called a news conference for 3 p.m. today at the Sports Pavilion. Officials would not confirm Oldfield's hiring and Oldfield could not immediately be reached.
Oldfield was 35-22 in two seasons at Ball State. The Cedar Rapids, Iowa, native was the top assistant at Iowa State for four years before being hired at Ball State.
With the Cyclones, Oldfield was in charge of recruiting and responsible for high school athletes in Minnesota. Among the notable athletes she recruited to Iowa State is Megan Taylor of Roseau, the all-time leading scorer in Minnesota prep history.
She was the Mid-American Conference coach of the year in 2000, when she coached Ball State to a 16-13 record.
The university fired Cheryl Littlejohn May 14 after four seasons, when an investigation determined she committed 12 NCAA violations.
Oldfield played collegiately at Arizona, where she was a three-year starter for the Wildcats. Her sister, Stacy Frese, played for the Utah Starzz of the WNBA last season.

From todays Cinti Enquirer. A big ten school is only paying their women's coach $101,500 per year... I guess wants you get past Pat Summit and the guy at uconn, women's teams coachs are paid nothing like the men's...
BALCOMB STILL IN RUNNING AT MINNESOTA - Xavier University women's coach Melanie Balcomb has pulled out of the running for the vacant coaching job at Oregon but is still in the running at Minnesota.
It's unclear if Balcomb has officially interviewed for the position, but Bobinski said he allowed Minnesota officials to talk with her and said he is symbolically holding his breath that she doesn't take the position.
Bobinski recently gave her a raise and contract extension through the 2006-07 season.
''I hope that's satisfactory,'' said
Bobinski. ''I don't know what more we could do.''
Minnesota's last coach, Cheryl Littlejohn, earned $101,500 per season, but according to the Minneapolis Star-Tribune it's doubtful the new coach would make that much because of financial difficulties in the athletic department.
Balcomb declined comment through a school spokesman; Minnesota women's athletic director Chris Voelz did not return phone calls.

Nicole scored 6 points on 3 for 4 shooting in the Sparks win today. She played 12 minutes and had 2 rebounds and 4 fouls, so you know she's still agressive as ever. Maybe some sportscenter highlights are next.

I'm sure you have discussed this topic but I am wondering if you know any new information about the Minnesota women's coaching position? Our coach at Ball State is also a candidate and we would hate to lose her as much as you would hate to lose your coach.
