Lenariah noticed the troubled expression that fell upon Celefe’s gentle face. Fearing that she had somehow caused this anguish, she interrupted before her friend could delve into what appeared to be a painful memory.

“My dear friend, please forgive me if I have done anything to upset you so,” the enchantress pleaded with sincerity and a soothing voice. “It did not occur to me that you did not wish to be saved. I have an awful tendency to use my magic before I use my mind. I was wrong in assuming that my help was needed.”

It seemed as though Celefe was avoiding Lenariah’s gaze. She stared at the arbors surrounding the serene clearing, and then at the spectacular heavens above. The enchantress became curious as to what this seemingly flawless and noble race had to hide. Certainly, there could be no evil within such courageous people. Yet, Lenariah reminded herself of the many examples of when outward appearances had deceived her. She prayed that, whatever this mystery revealed itself to be, it would not change her friendship with Celefe.

Lenariah spoke again, hoping to ease the discomfort of her comrade. “It is not my desire to make you reopen old wounds. I promise you that, if it is within my abilities, I will do anything to help you and your people. You have my word- no matter what you are about to tell me, my allegiance and friendship belongs to you. If you sense that it is necessary for my ears to hear this tale, please continue.”
