Subject: Horoscope / Fortuneteller

The Catholic Church does not believe in fortunetellers, or in reading horoscopes. What does your religion believe about this ?

What is your own personal belief....have you ever gone to a fortuneteller, or do you sometimes read your horoscope in the newspaper, or on the web ?

It's against our religion to believe in it. I don't see anything wrong if you go for entertainment purposes though and don't revolve your life around what is being said.

[> I went to a fortune teller once. -- Joan, 19:15:05 08/07/07 Tue [1] (ip68-0-253-131.ri.ri.cox.net/68.0.253.131)

I thought it would be fun. It's a bunch of nonsense, but I thought it would be fun to see how much he could get right. Well, he could tell that I wasn't going to give him any information to make better guesses with and he got mad. That's when he started giving me "bad" news. Everything in my future was supposed to be bad or a mistake. He told me my husband had another child out there somewhere, etc. I think what made him the maddest was that I didn't believe any of it and that he couldn't make me wonder about my husband. He was really mad by the time I left.

I wouldn't do it again, because those people are a little nutty. They know it's nonsense, but they get mad when their customers don't beleive it's real. What difference does it make to them? I paid the fee just like the gullible people paid. He probably wanted my repeat business, and knowing that I was there only for fun, he was sure I wasn't coming back.

I don't believe in any of it, but it could be fun if the person telling the fortune admitted that it's a game and played just for fun. Some people are really good a guessing and reading other people--even when the other person is trying not to show any reaction to the guesses.

Joan

There are some people out there that can actually tell someone their fortune. In Vegas, once at the Aladdin, there was this guy who charged alot of money but his way was so different than the others who worked there. He used a pen and paper and told people not only their past, but their present and future. His deal was tell the people about their past, so that way they knew he was real, before telling them their present. How would he know their past, or what's presently going on right? So once he had the people convinced, he would then tell them their future. It was scary, but exciting. I never went to him, but people were lined up to see him. Too bad the Aladdin did away with it, and now its called Planet Hollywood, so no more of these people there. I wonder where this guy is now?

Years ago when I was in Canada on vacation with my parents I went to a fortuneteller who read my palm. It was a lot of fun. Even though I really didn't believe any of it.

Sometimes I do read my horoscope in the newspaper.

Why does the Catholic church not "believe" in fortune tellers?

I believe "in" them. I see them all the time. ;)
Should be we believe "on" their words? Please tell me why the CC says no.

When my parents married in 1939, they went to the New York World's Fair for their honeymoon. While there my mother convinced my father to go and see a fortune teller that was on the grounds, just for the fun of it. She told my mother that she would die suddenly at the age of 57. Of course my parents laughed it off, however, my mom did suddenly die at the age of 57, in 1975. A fulfilled prophecy perhaps?

I was stunned when I read about your mom! I do believe that some fortune tellers can predict the future; that they have special psychic abilities. But,I also believe that the majority are frauds.

I didn't find out about what the fortune teller told my parents about my mom, until after her death. It was something never spoken of, probably long tucked away. My dad told his children about it afterwards, probably shaken up a little by the memory of it.

I remember the nuns telling us it was a sin and that the Catholic Church does not believe in fortune tellers, or reading of horoscopes.

I looked it up as to why the Catholic Church is against it.

The Catholic Church says it is against the First Commandment. Because you are worshipping a superstitious practice.

Lev. 19:31 "Do not go to mediums orconsult fortune tellers, for you will be defiled by them. I, the Lord, am your God.

Fortunetellers try to predict the future through the use of the occult, magic, or superstition.

The Catholic Church says it is forbidden to seek knowledge of the future by using tarot cards, crystal ball, study of the hand, the stars, ouija board, all superstitious means. We are opening ourselves up to the occult.

I've already used a ouija board, my friend's aunt can read tarot cards. She read my cards. It was all in fun.

Don't take this the wrong way. I really don't know any other way to put it...

If the bible forbids something, such as theft, pride, and visiting fortune tellers...et al, I assume it's not for the purpose of being there for just good reading, ;) but it must be there for my own good. The old testament is filled with some rules, guidelines and boundries that seem absurd by today's standard. Some were men's rules and not God's, but he allowed them being a tolerant of man's ignorance. However, there are some that he was specific about and I assume for a purpose. But God said he doesn't change. So if I do something in direct contrast to what he says to not do, regardless of my intentions, good or even for fun, then I expect it sets in motion something that will have an adverse reaction. For every action there is a reaction. Some think God's word forbids us "fun and a good life" (Eve thought so too) but I don't see it that way. I think his words are there to help us, protect us and guide us. Do I believe in foretune tellers? Sure. They're real. Do I belive they know about me and what's to be expected of my life? I doubt it. Besides the God word (Jerimiah I think)says something to this effect "I know the For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says the Lord, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you an expected end."...

I reckon he knows and that's good enough for me. :)

When I looked it up as to why the Catholic Church is against it. There was a mention of Jeremiah 10:2.

A lot has to do with the occult, that is why the Catholic Church is against it.

When I was in college. There was a girl from Washington D.C., she lived a few doors down from me in my dorm. She dressed all in black. She worshipped Satin. A friend of mine was in this girl's room with three other people. They were playing with a ouija board. My friend she was a Baptist, and the three others all thought it would be fun. My friend said that books, pens, everything in the room started flying around in the room. Another girl who was Catholic, and from Missouri, said it felt like a tornado. They tried to leave the room. But they couldn't move. I remember the event well. It was in the evening. I was sitting in my room hanging out with a few friends. All of a sudden we heard all this noise. When we came out into the hall. A crowd had already gathered. We could hear loud noises, and screams coming from this room. I remember two RA's tried to open the door. They could only open it a few inches. As they did, where I was standing I remember this blast of very cold air coming from the room. When everything stopped, and my friend came out of the room her face was white and she was shaking.
