M�att began to feel sick. To think that Synthis � the most wonderful girl he had ever met � was the daughter of an abusive, selfish, dragon-killer�it couldn�t be true! How could any man do that to his daughter? How could any man do that to anyone? It defied belief! And yet he knew that Synthis wouldn�t lie to him. Who would make a lie as awful as that? Ashertith was red-eyed with rage. Killing any dragonkin was despicable�

But when she asked if there was anything else he wanted to know, he had to break the eye contact he�d had with her. This would be the hardest question he had ever asked�he wasn�t even sure if he could find the words.

�Did he ever�� he broke off and tried again. �Did he ever�� The young man shook his head. �Nothing. Forget it. Synthis, you�ve been so brave��

Calming himself down, Ashertith took the task of asking M�att�s question to Xiualith, in private. He can�t bring himself to ask her, because he fears the answer and how she will resent the question. Did your rider�s father ever� Even the brown struggled to put it delicately. �Bed her?
