The search domain blocks can cause BIG problems if they are configured statically in a DHCP network. After you configure your IP control panel, what is the IP address after you go back in? If you get an IP starting with 169, then your Mac never got to talk to a DHCP server which means you might not have your connection configured. Make sure the search domain blocks are empty and that the load only when needed block is unchecked in the options menu.
