Soup. Homemade soup packed full of vegies and whatever carbohydrates Rob and you like. Find a few recipes or ideas/guidelines that you like, make up large batches and freeze it in "zappable" portions. Soup is satisfying especially when it's cold and you get that warmth kick in in the belly straight away and if you leave biggish "chewable" chunks of vegies in there the mouth feels satisfied too. :)

Pita breads. For stuffing full of crunchie vegies and cottage cheese (which is naturally low fat) or for turning into mini pizza bases (with a lot of veg and tomato and only a little cheese to hold it all together, or for cutting into wedges and using as a dip with a salsa (the salsa shouldn't be high in calories I don't think - it's mainly tomato and other veg I think?).

Rice. Rissotos to make and freeze and again keep in portions ready to "neuk" and eat for snacks. Basmati rice is the only rice (apart from brown) that I really like, it's a little dearer but worth it IMO.

Think creole maybe? Shrimps have no cholesteral I believe, no fat - again they are a little pricy but they should be a small part of the meal, more for a flavour boost.

Muffins for sweet snacks (they freeze and reheat well as a rule). If you can find a few healthy recipes that you and Rob like and make up a couple of batches a week you'll always have something on hand for when the "gotto have something sweet" times reach out and drag you under (sinking into dreams of chocolate down here and trying to tell myself that a muffin with a teaspoonful of chocolate chips in it is *just as much* chocolate as a bar of dark solid chocolate is!! ;) ..mind over matter, LOL!!
and yogurt!!! Make your own at home and add fruit etc - eat a ton of it (skim milk based that is), I love yogurt!!

Make sure he eats breakfast (I should take my own advice on that one!), it'll set him up for the day and help him avoid the mid morning "snack attack" mode.

Try out new herbs and spices to help make up for the lack of taste when cutting down on salt (not easy I know, I love salt and eat way too much but am slowly learning to "think and taste" first and then add lightly).

Have a really good look around at what fruit and veg are avaliable and try something new every week. If you aren't sure about it there's bound to be info. on the net somewhere, if you have trouble finding it throw the name in here and I'll bet someone will know or be able to find out for you. :) Trying something new on a regular basis will expand your options in the "healthy" zone. Also try out all the different carbohydrates, every culture has their own and they are all slightly different but they all have one thing in common - they are filling and satisfying and are not normally fattening or unhealthy in themselves - again it's what we add to them that make them that way!

Rice
Bread
Potatoes
Cous Cous
Cracked Wheat
Oats
Corn
Sweet Potato (Taro in the Pacific Islands, Kumara here in NZ, yams in some places)
Bread (does not have to be fattening - cut out the fattening spreads and rethink bread into a healthy, satisfying, cheap and easy snack. :)
Barley (which I think is lovely in soups but some people don't like it all that much).
Pasta - in all it's endless forms, colours, types etc :)
Wheat (as in flour) for baking filling but healthy snacks.
Beans and pulses (not to be overlooked and can be a good source of protein too).
Are sago and tapioca carbs? I remember my mother used to make a sago pudding when I was young but I have no clue how such a thing is done - anyone else know?

Explore different low cal, low fat dressing and sauce ideas to make food more interesting. Buy lean meat cuts and use less, think asian style cooking - stir fries for example.

Popcorn! Homemade, oil and butter free and keep it low salt - something to munch on if Rob goes ahead with kicking the smoking thing that won't have to be limited. :)

Really there is only so much raw veg that a person can eat before the mere thought of a leaf of lettuce or a carrot stick will make you feel like you're sprouting so seriosly explore the soup idea, somehow cooking it and having it hot just makes all the difference.

Same with the fruit - try stewing it sometimes and having it with yogurt maybe.

Lisa when my sister went on the Kiwi Kiss progamme (not diet - life style change) she had pretty bad eating habbits and was a *snacker* too (hope she doen't mind me saying all this if she reads it) but it simply changed her life and restructered her approach to food. She would tell me what she was eating and it all sounded yummy (I have some of the recipes actually and I make them quite often - there is pizza and Indian buttered chicken as a couple of examples), most days she couldn't get through all the food she was allowed! It din't happen in a week, or a month but over a period of many months, little by little she lost a lot of weight (I am so proud of my sis!!) and now she looks wonderful but better than that - she is happy! She is healthy too (more so than I am in many ways, sigh... guess I'd better get my butt along there too, LOL). She gets out and walks SamdeMan nearly every single day because she can, and she enjoys it! She did this for herself because she wanted to and I think that's important - Rob needs to want this if it's going to be a success, he needs to feel good about it and not just that he's "doing as he's been told by the Doc". He's going to need to really think about when he eats and try and beat the hunger pattern that develops with constant snacking. That means that he needs to eat relatively healthy low/cal food BEFORE he feels hungry. That's the best way to stay away from the *bad* food.

Breakfast
Mid morning healthy snack
Lunch
Mid afternoon healthy snack
Dinner followed by a healthy dessert like fruit and yoghurt
Something to fill in the last gap in the evening if he needs it (healthy muffin maybe).

He's gonna need to eat till he's groaning and begging for mercy ;-) and then when the food adds all start to roll across the telly at around 7pm (as they do here) with visions of cheesy pizza, scrummy desserts and whatever else they think they can get us to spend $$$ on, they aren't going to make him go searching the cupboards for high fat *kick me in the taste buds NOW* food - he's going to be way too full of all the *good* stuff! :)

Good Luck!!!
