All kinds of birthday hoopla seems to be going on over there at the library. Balloons attached to the roof sway in the breeze. Black ribbons have been tied to every branch on the trees in front of the library. KS watches as a troupe of people stagger under the weight of an enormous cake. Three pick-up trucks drive up with a pile of presents in each.

KS is steamed. Pushing past the maid who falls over a chair and is being consumed by the greasy green cloud of alien gnats following her, KS stands in front of JD. He slowly lowers the paper.

"Rabid is having a huge birthday party at the library!" She sputters. "What do you have planned for me?"

"Party?" JD says absentmindedly, then sits erect when he sees the murderous look on KS's face. "Er...Kande's in charge of that this year."

"Kande?" KS says incredulously. "You're allowing Kande to plan my party? What kind of party is she planning?"

JD sighs and puts down the paper again. "Well my dear, it was supposed to be a surprise party."

KS brightens. "Oh, I always wanted one of those! With lots of presents?"

"Naturally." JD's face is hidden behind the paper again. Seeing that she's not going to get any more information out of him, KS wanders out onto the front porch to spy on the library activities.

A marquee has been erected that says "Happy Birthday to our favorite librarian, Rabid!" There's more garbage about Rabid and librarians, and then at the very end, in extremely tiny letters -- so tiny that KS runs into the kitchen and rummages around in her catch-everthing drawer until she finds her binoculars. Raising them to her eyes, she peers until she finds the letters on the marquee. They say: Happy Birthday to that assassin-person.

Ooh! Those librarians! KS runs out to the garage to get her ladder, some spare marquee letters she keeps just in case, and some black paint. She'll show those librarians!

JD gets up and glances out the window to keep an eye on KS. He picks up the phone and dials a number.

"Kande? It's me, JD. Have you started on KS's birthday party plans yet? You've only got 5 more days."

At the Klub, Kande looks blankly at the phone receiver. She puts it back up to her ear. "What party?"

-KS, who feels she is entering her mid-life year. By the way, Rabid, I'm now a school librarian. Isn't it weird how our lives parallel each other? Or is it weird...perhaps I'm taking over YOUR life!
