I share your pain, diana. I wasn't at all exstatic to see Darla go, and her speech to Angel, her heartfelt confessions of apology for his death only made everything all the more tragic. I have to be honest and say that I cried for her.

I can't however, chide the WB or Joss or anyone else for their decision. Why?

1.First and foremost, Darla did not die cheaply, it was her own choice to die, and she decided to do it for the good of her child, not Angel, or anyone else. She chose it because she wanted her baby to live. I thought that was completely honorable, and what was more, she came to this decision under the effects of the child's soul...which means that she was able to atone for some of her sin. Her apology to Angel made me cry, because I had often wondered if it was something that she always wanted to say to him when she was human.

2.Once again, not happy about Darla's death, but I want all of us A/Da shippers to remember the positive things about this ship. Because A/Da existed in the past, the ship cannot be disparaged. I didn't see any positive future for Darla and Angel after the child's birth, in fact, after her speech I was predicting that he would kill her. If, in fact, (and most likely) she went after the child because she no longer felt the effects of a soul.

3.I was truly touched when Angel kissed Darla's hand, held onto her like he didn't want to ever let go. They connected on a level that I don't think that he and Buffy ever could. They both knew the pain of committing atrocities and then feeling the weight of your guilt with a soul.

4.Darla's death paralleled Angel's. They both died in an alley, effectively, she redeemed herself for what she had done. The baby, by contrast, is the reincarnation of Angel himself. This is a version of him with a chance to live on and do good in the world, good that Angel himself can never use to erase the evil that he had done.

5.Holtz is still bad, good.

While I deeply mourn the death of Darla's character as a "current" and active part of the storyline this season, I can't say that I am completely angry by this turn of events. For me, Da/A always will exist in the past, and even though the writers *could* probably have kept her on, I think that the most respect to her character was done when she sacrificed herself for something greater. We didn't see another wussified vamp, instead we saw one emotionally redeem herself, in a very believable way.

Once again, another nice thing about this ship, it can't die because most of the lore exists in the pasts of the characters. I miss Darla/Julie Benz deeply, but I still love the character and hope that we will see her in flash backs.

Over all, I think it was a very good episode, doing justice to all of the characters. I still expect the best from ATS this season.

Rest in peace, Darla.
