I can't believe this. Everything's going down hill. First my mami gets diagnosed with breast cancer. Now I have to go to a summer camp for kids who are learning to cope with relatives who have serious illnesses. What is the world coming to? I'm 16 years old[I'll be 17 on July 5th]. I shouldn't be at a camp with other kids I should be here; with my friends, my family, and most of all my mami. She needs me right now. So why is the hospital, my mami, and my aunt trying to send me away? Don't they love me anymore?
All I know is that I'm going to miss my sister Kaylonie. We've never been apart except for when she had to go to college. She's still there. I wonder why she doesn't have to go. I mean she's 21, 4 years older than me. So what's the difference isn't the lady with the illness both of our mami? Why do they think I'll have a problem with handling this and she won't? Too many questions for them to answer and so little time. I only have a week before I leave. I'll be there most of the summer. I hate this. I really do hate this.

Me: So I have to go to this camp for like the entire summer. I'll turn 17 down there at the camp instead of here with you guys.
I was on the phone with my best friends Kelly and Clara.
Clara: Girl don't worry about that. You know when you come back we'll have something planned. When you get back it'll be just like old times aiight?
Kelly: C we ain't old aiight? Chelle don't worry I think you going to this camp will really help you except the fact that your mom has brest cancer. I mean I know it must be something hard to swallow right now but trust me you going to this camp and getting your feelings out will really help.
Me: Thanx Kel. You always know what to say to make me feel better. Even if it is just a lil bit. Just let me think on it and it'll grow.
Kelly: Glad I could help. But now when you come back I want to see pictures of everything. The outdoors, guys, everything you did, guys, who you made friends with, and oh yeah did I say guys?
Me: Dang Kel you're starting to sound like C over there. Don't you have a man?
C: Look ain't nothin wrong with going window shoppin as long as you ain't buyin. Ya heard me?
Me:[laughing] C you crazy. What would Lami say if he heard you say something like that?
Kelly: Probably something like. [immitaing Lami's voice] Clara Randall I know you ain't lookin at anotha nigga while you with me. Don't you know that makes me look bad infront of my friends because I have to be the one with the most perfect everything? My girl can't be looking at otha niggas. So stop it!
We all laughed after that. If anybody could immitate Olamide`, or Lami as we called him he was C's boyfriend, was Kelly. She could immitate just about anybody we knew.
Me: Well look I gotta go before my aunt starts flippin. She's stayin over for a couple of days and she wants me off the phone at 1 and it's 11:30 and I still have to call my sister and Nelly.
C/Kel: Aiight chick. See ya tomorrow.
Me: Mos def. Peacez.
C/Kel: Bye.
And we hung up. C and Kel have been my best friends since them diaper days. I guess that was because our mothers were best friends too. So we just grew up around each other and we've been best friends ever since. The one worst thing I'd have to say about going to this camp for 2 months was the fact that I'd be away from them. They were like my sisters since the only other sister I had was 4 years older than me. But Kay and me, we were still close.
Kay was the one that told me about everything. Especially since my mother couldn't really talk to me about it. I mean sex, babies, periods, etc. Everything the whole 9 yeards, Kay told me about. I guess that's one of the reasons why were so close. The other is that Kay was like my second mom since my mother was so busy trying to raise us and give us the better things in life since she was a single parent. My dad? I don't know what happened to him. My mother didn't like to talk about him that much. When we asked questions about him she would get upset.
When he left I was about 5 months old, so I don't remember a thing about him, and Kay was almost 4 years old when he decided to split on us. I always wondered if he even cared that he had 2 children living in ATL where ever he was. But I really didn't pay it any attention because I had my mami and my sister.
