But I am familiar with Down Syndrome. My nephew has it. If you have a child with DS, the best advice is to get early intervention. Also, make sure that the baby is exposed to many intellectually stimulating opportunities. Repetition is very important. Early intervention does not emphasize intellectual development like it should. The child with DS isn't curious like most children, so you have to persuade them to be curious and to want to learn. It's a tricky balance because one can push too much. But I will tell you this: if the child with DS is exposed to the right kind of learning environment, he or she can actually develop superior intelligence (superior even to "normal" children). I was born with Cystic Hygroma in 1964 and nearly killed my mother in the delivery process. But with the will of God and the prayers of many choice souls both my mother and I survived. My cystic hygroma was the largest recorded at that time and in fact, to this day I have not seen one to even match in its extent and size. I have lived a full and active life for the most part, although I have had reoccurances with the disease. It is for this reason I was on the web trying to find out all I can to alleviate some of the pain and suffering I encounter from time to time, when I read your story, I became soften by the Spirit because of the love you have for your family member. I realize that so much time has passed here since you posted your request for help and my comments will probably go unserved, however, I wanted you to know that I was touched and I would be willing to communicate with you to offer hope and prayers and emotional support. Obviously, I don't know what family member decided to do. The doctors have told me that if ultrasound had been available when I was born, they would have advised my mother to having me abort because of the danger to my mother's life. However, we are very pro-life because of our great faith in God and in His Son Jesus Christ, and my mother would have had a C-section and risked her own life. I love my mother dearly! I love my life dearly as well. My life has been difficult and trying, both emotionally and physically. I've had numoruous surgeries and yet I am so grateful for the life that God has allowed me to live. If you would like me to communicate or offer my assistance from my experience or perhaps even speak with my mother who is extremely healthy to this day, having raised 7 children, (I was the third child born, oldest son, and the only medically challenged in this way), that would be great if we could in some offer hope and a little happiness in your lives. Now, onto your situation: What is the risk of waiting? If the baby does have it's unfortunate demise in 4 to 6 weeks, you maybe still be able to deliver vaginally. If the baby should fight and live longer, then a c-section would be in order. You may have risked a c-section any way by the baby being large or not breech. So to me, a c-section would not be the deciding factor. As for high blood pressure, these things are controlled either by medication or by going on bedrest. If your health was in danger, then delivering the baby at that time (when it's in danger) is the best thing to do. Letting God decide when the time is right is really the choice here. If you wait and let God take his course, then your soul would be free of the burden of taking the baby's life. I assure you, that most doctors are giving your the worst scenario in many cases to be exempt from future lawsuits. For myself, I was told to not continue the pregnancy, that the baby was going to be malformed and not have lungs (I had severely low amniotic fluid as soon as I hit the 3rd trimester). My diabetes was out of control and I was having to shoot two needles full of insulin every 4 hours when I was awake. My diabetes had the potential of kidney damage to me and many times, I went into shock from the massive amounts of insulin. I was also put on bedrest. I waited until the very last moment I could and had an emergency c-section. I have to run and will try to type more later. I'm sorry this was rushed and seems cut and dry. I don't know why doctors try to give us the option to terminate the baby and give us the right to manipulate nature to one's advantage. I think I would feel better if I wait and see but I'm also afraid given the diagnos the doctor has written in my file. I was told that the lungs aren't developing because of the fluid building all around the heart and two massive tissues growing in the back of the head. That the doctor has no hope for the baby and if I do carry the baby to term it will probably die shortly after birth. It was suggested I terminate the pregnancy anyway. I will be talking to my obstetrition on Tuesday to determine what to do at this point but all I can do right now is to try and get support from people who had similar situations and hope they can help me with this heartbreaking news. To my knowledge, when Hydrops is involved the outlook can be pretty grim. However, I have heard of a positive outcome with a diagnosis of cystic hygroma-hydrops. But in the event that the doctor is right and this baby will not survive, I believe terminating a dying baby is not necessary. I would seek out another doctor ASAP! I felt like I was just another patient for him and ended with no word of sympathy. I entered the office again and said is there anything else you can do. All he told me was it's over and that 3 doctors saw your ultrasound, they gave you a poor diagnosis and to go home. I said I guess I only have God on my side. I was given what seems to be the typical counseling, complete with "options." When I told the doctor that that was NOT an option for me, he said, "so you will just wait until the spontaneous demise of the pregnancy?" Now the research I have done (correct me if I am wrong) shows the possibility of spontaneous recession of the hygroma, and that no one really knows the true fetal mortality rate, because almost 90% of those diagnosed choose to terminate their pregnancies. How sad! I have opted to wait until I am further along for any kind of invasive testing, since the risk of miscarriage is still pretty high from the procedures alone. As you know, in my case my son had a good outcome. I certainly can't promise that you too will have a good outcome, but you and your baby sure do deserve at least a chance for one! Although there have been weeks that the hygromas have grown and the fluid around the belly has worsened, the fluid around the heart has stayed the same. And we have taken that as huge blessing. I am 28 and just went through the hardest five weeks of my life. When we were 14 weeks along we were told that our baby had a severe case of cystic hygroma-hydrops and there was no hope and prepare for the worst. They knew we were people of faith so they never suggested termination. Those next weeks that felt like months we were on our knees begging God for a miracle. Everyone around us prayed that God would heal our little angel if it was His will. I also prayed the hard prayer that if our baby was going to suffer on earth that God would take it from my womb to his loving arms. At the next app. there was no heart beat and little Grace went home to live with our saviour Jesus Christ. When others found out they were devestated for us, but not us we knew that God got to see the big picture and spared our Grace and us a life of pain. My husband and i said if our story helped even one person it was worth it. This was only a month ago and I am open to sharing more with you and help you through this difficult time. In (2 Cor.1:3)God tells us to use the comfort we recieve from Him to comfort others. Take this waiting time to draw close to God He is close to the brokenhearted. I just recently lost my baby girl on Christmas day 2003 to cystic hygroma with fetal hydrops. I was 27 weeks when I had her on the 23 day of Dec, and she fought for her life for 2 days in the NICU. Because of extra amniotic fluid I tried to go into preterm labor with her and when the contractions were stopped, I stated accumulaating fluid around my heart and lungs and finally we had to decide to do an emergency cesarean section. I feel like you do. I don't have any answers. The doctors thought she had Turner's syndrome before I had her but the results of the chromosomal analysis done showed no chromosomal abnormalities. I've tried searching for answers but have not found none. I know your pain and I truly smpathize with you because I feel the same pain. It was traumatising to say the least andI think that not knowing the cause of the hydrops is quite frustrating. I met with a genetic counselor and she smoothed some things over with me. but i know im never going to be okay. this is my second pregnancy, my first one was around october last year and i miscarried at 5weeks. Its just so hard, im so young and i know i have pleanty of time, but when im haveing problems this early in life with pregnancy it just seems that its always going to be that way. I have been looking for some story of a similar baby who is fine, but i have yet to found one. I hope some of my information can help somebody. All i can say is just pray, that is all you can do. But, that still doesn't mean that ending the pregnancy is a good course to follow -- esp if your wife is opposed. It's a terrible blow to have the bad news to beging with, but then to be asked to do something that you are opposed to . . . that's a great way to turn a sad situation into a tragic one. There is a long and very informative thread on babycenter.com -- it is hundreds of posts long going over several months. It is mainly about cystic hygromas, though I think some of the babies may have had hydrops, too. All of the women continued their pregancies. Some of the babies did indeed die in utero (which is very sad), but others did not. In some cases, the hygromas resolved. I am a nurse and have a very good understanding of what is happening and will most likely terminate the pregnancy. I have wondering though if there has been much chance of survival when a fetus has both. I cannot find much info out there, everything seems to be more on the poor prognosis side. I have never been opposed to abortion and allways believed in prochoice but I never once thought I would be making the decision for my own child. I am early enough in the pregnancy to do something about this and I don't want to prolong a life of suffering. Its not fair to this unborn child or to the family I already have. With my first pregnancy the the ultrasound detected an abnormality. The doctors told me the baby had too much fluid on the brain,(Hydrocephalus) and that he would be retarded. My son is 11 years old, he is not developmentally delayed. Doctors can be wrong even when the condition diagnosed is correct. My son still has Hydro, but it has not caused him any health problems. As mentioned, our amnio results came back favourable and today we had a 16 week ultrasound they wanted to perform right after the amnio results. The baby's development is right on schedule and all looks well so far. We got the news from the perinatologist that the hygroma has shrunk almost completely and is definitely "resolving". My wife and I both know we are far from out of the woods, but this was encouraging news. We have another ultrasound scheduled for 2 weeks and the fetal echo test in about 5 weeks. We have been following that CH thread on BabyCenter.com which has us so nervous. Too many mothers had normal chromosome results, had the CH resolve, but still had hydrops or other birth defects develop so much later. We're trying to temper family member's enthusiasm because my wife and I both know the realities of the situation. While we are encouraged by the turn of events, we know we still have around 6 months of emotional roller coaster to deal with HOPEFULLY. We got our bad news 3+ weeks ago and it's been a roller coaster since. Some updated info. Our baby did NOT have any presence of hydrops at both the first and the follow-up ultrasound. That is promising of course. We had the option of an early stage amnio which we took 2+ weeks ago and just got the results back. The chromosomes are normal which is encouraging. Just today we asked about the gender and now know we have a little boy who is in for the battle of his young life. We're undergoing a 15 week ultrasound this coming Wednesday which will tell us what has happened in these past 3 weeks. Obviously we're nervous about hydrops being present, but the Doctor made it clear 3 weeks ago that there is no sign of yet. Now comes the tough part. The genetic counselor told us that even though the chromosomes are normal, the tough part now is finding out why a hygroma is present. So, we've received about the best news possible (re: amnio). The Doctor told us during the last ultrasound (just before the amnio) that the baby seems to be developing fine, all things considered. No sign of any abnormalities outside of the hygroma....YET. My husband & I have one son & he a thick nuchal fold at my 19 wk u/s, so I did an amnio to confirm he was healthy. All turned out fine & he is now a healthy 3 ½ year old. After 2 losses & IF treatment, my husband & I were so excited to get pregnant after IVF #2. In order to avoid an amnio I decided to go in for a first trimester screen to make sure all was well. I was devastated to learn that the baby had a borderline nuchal measurement (2.8-2.9) and worse yet, they saw a “cystic hygroma”. The perinatologist who came in told me, “This does not look like a healthy baby”. With a statement like that, it was hard to hold on to hope but I did a ton of research so I would be prepared. I learned 50% of babies with cystic hygromas do have chromosome abnormalities. I also learned, you need to go in for a fetal echocardiogram (heart u/s) to make sure there are no heart problems. We elected not to do a CVS since it was a little riskier, but did decide to do an amnio at 16w5d. We received our results back & we are having a healthy little girl. We still need to have more detailed u/s on the heart, but at my last u/s they said it looks just perfect. Also, the cystic hygroma appears to be diminishing & right now it just looks like a thickened nuchal fold, just like my son had. We did not have any hydrops or other abnormalities noted on any u/s.
