Yes -- they're screwed . . . finesse fighters can't come close to the damage a strength/GreatSword fighter can. It sucks and it's not right . . . in fact -- fighters at levels over 10 or so are screwed vs casters.

Some people say that the balancing factor is that fighters have greater survivability at lower levels but that's bullshit . . . caster survival can be controlled with good tactics and a shitload of fighters backing him up -- (stupid caster!) In case you can't tell, this subject totally pisses me off. I think Fighters should start gaining 1 feat every level at 10th -- that MIGHT start leveling out the playing field.

OK, but back to your question:

The very very cool thing about finesse fighters is that they have panache and great role playing potential -- I know that's totally lame but I'm graping at straws here.

Anyway, I built a Swashbuckler Class that sort of makes playing a Finesse fighter more fun:

Swashbuckler: as fighter except:
Alignment: Non-Lawful
Hit Dice: d8
Good Save: Reflex (not Fort)
Skill Points: 4 + int
Class Skills: Balance (Dex), Bluff (Cha), Climb (Str), Craft (Int), Diplomacy (Cha), Escape Artist (Dex), Gather Information (Cha), Handle Animal (Cha), Intimidate (Cha), Jump (Str), Perform (Cha), Ride (Dex), Tumble (Dex) Swim (Str) and Use Rope()
Bonus Feats: Remove the Power Attack branch but add some Rogue based ones instead (Uncanny Dodge, Evasion, Opportunist, Improved Evasion, Defensive Roll)

A comparison of Swashbuckler10 vs Rog5/Ftr5

BAB HP SkillPts F/R/W Special
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rog/Ftr +8 47 84(max12) 5/5/2 3 bonus feats + Sneak, Evasion, Uncanny Dodge
Swashbuckler +10 48 52(max13) 3/7/3 6 bonus feats

Possible Feat progression
H Swashbuckling
F1 Weapon Finesse
1 Improved Init
f2 Expertise
3 Improved Disarm
f4 Snatch Weapon
6 Quick Draw
f6 Dodge
f8 Improved Crit
9 Weapon Focus
f10 Weapon Spec
12 Mobility
f12 Spring Attack
