they get squashed into classic romance tropes almost by accident.

Except I'd disagree with "by accident". Some stories and some writers hold those Harlequin/Traditional Romance Genre stereotypes very near and dear to their hearts and contort the characters to fit the archtype.

So we have Weak!Whiny!Nikita who needs Strong!Silent!Michael to help her tie her shoes. And Slutty!Elena (since the Traditional Romance Stereotype seems to expect that sexual woman=BAD woman). And Good-Looking But Ultimately Evil Helmut/Jurgen

(Please to note: not all HR or romance-based stories are this way? I'm not speaking about specific writers, but a writing trend I've been observing. Also, I loves me a good romance book - but I find Harlequin and other genre titles still expect and produce stories with very strict story expectations. You don't find a snarly, surly Eve Dallas-type of heroine in th etradition Harlequin titles.)
