Subject: Who ARE we?

"I recognize that I am made up of several persons and that the person that at the moment has the upper hand will inevitably give place to another. But which is the real one? All of them or none?
Somerset Maugham (1874–1965), British writer.
A Writer's Notebook.1

Another really interesting take on this idea comes from Brugh Joy. He believes that we are all multiple personalities and that the only difference between us and someone with this diagnosis is that we are conscious in our multiplicity. His idea is that separate entities come and go in our bodies at different times. Sort of like our bodies are just vehicles for different energies to occupy for awhile.

While this may seem far fetched, when I think about it, it makes sense to me. I have many different personas (not to speak of alter egos) and they are often quite different both in how they feel to me and how they show up in the world. And sometimes they are even at odds with each other.

For instance, inside of me a war is raging. Anger is most upset with Pleaser. Pleaser always wants to be accomodating and loving but Anger is forceful, unaccomodating and has entirely different sorts of things to say. During the shakedown this internal war has become red hot and it isn't over yet.

Quite often these personas come and go in reaction to outer events but do you notice that some days you wake up feeling great while other days you feel terrible and sometimes something in between? And this time nothing much has changed on the outer. What is this all about? It's so fascinating, this question of who we are. Who ARE we anyway???
