Thank you Martin, in your response to my posting, at least I have got an acknowledgement that the Halle "did" appear at this seasons Proms. As I said before, you would not think so from this forum. However, as I also said before, I am biased and therefore cannot be considered an impartial critic in this case.
For example, I generally thought the first night was almostly totally unsucessful with a BBC Symphony Orchestra playing well below its own high standards and those of other Orchestras. We had a solist who was very inexperienced for such an occasion and gave a performance which was nowhere as good as a performance of the same concerto I recently heard from a young person who did not even reach the final of the BBC Young Musician of the Year. As to the conductor who I normally admire and for whose entry on the BBC scene I was so looking forward, he turned in a nervous and tired performance of works which, for me did not "light up" the first night. Even the Serenade to Music had the Soloists up at the back of the platform where they did not make the full impact that they should.
Therefore, having experienced a generally unsuccessful first night, I thought the contrast of the Halle's really splendid visit to the 2001 season a day later would be noticed even more so, and especially since they have been struggling for the last few years both financially and musically.
I therefore entered this forum, not to put forward my own views, but to hear what some of the hundreds of Premenaders who were present with me at the Concert had to say about it. I am an orchestral musician and I will say that technically the Halle are now a very "tight" ensemble indeed with a lovely sound reminding one, (dare I say it), of the Barbirolli days, yes? No. Well lets hear what you have to say and what all you "Opera Buffs", (I'm not really one although I have some friends who are), thought of the Verdi. Or perhaps it was too "popular". Maybe then I might be persuaded to reply, but I am willing to bet you won't acknowledge the Halle, its taken some people years to appreciate what a great Orchestra Manchester has in its other Orchestra the BBC Phil, remember the days when it was looked "down upon" as just another of the BBC's regional orchestras, an "off night" at the Proms. I know because I was there.
Regards, Derrick Fawsitt.
