Technically, they cannot begin the search for a City Manager until the vacancy exists (April 1st). What they need to have in place by April 1st is naming an Interim City Manager. They went into Executive Session at the end of last night’s workshop to discuss names. It will be interesting to see who that will be.

They also discussed last night that they will do a national search for the new City Manager, and will hopefully have one named within six months. They will be hiring a consultant to help them with that search.

Some other thoughts about last night’s workshop:
1. It is refreshing to have Councilwoman Stewart and Councilman Zorilla on the council. They both have a big learning curve, but have jumped right in and have put a lot of work into the job.
2. Councilwoman Stewart should temper her comments. It is clear that she does not like Mr. Venning (or at least how he managed the city). Arguing back and forth with the City Manager, or her fellow council members is not productive though and just distracts from getting the work done.
3. I believe Councilman Zorilla is wrong in his assessment that Mr. Neppl is interested in the City Manager’s job. I believe Mr. Neppl was interested in having the job handed to him on a promotional basis, but is not interested in competing for the position. I hope that I am wrong about that.
4. Mr. Nepal’s body language the past several meetings is that of someone who has already checked out. I would expect him to announce his resignation on or after April 1st.
5. Has Councilman Shakur abandoned his Councilman seat? He has not attended since leaving in the middle of a meeting after dropping an F bomb in Councilwoman Stewart.
