Subject: The Ramakrishna Order and Yogananda

I was closely involved with the Ramakrishna Order when I was in my teens. They were lovely in many ways but qute obsessed with respectabilty. The Head Swami in U K at the time had met Yogananda in India when Paramahansaji returned from the West. The swami was very critical of Yogananda saying that he had paraded his wealth on return, demonstrating his success. The swami was disappointed when I read The Autobiography. The story that had become famous in the Order was a meeting between Prabhavananda and Yogananda.Apparently,Yogananda had tried to hypnotise Prabhavananda.
All I can say, is for God's sake, why would Yogananda want to do something like that, what use would a hypnotised monk be to him? Given the huge disapproval SRF have towards any type of hypnotism,I find these accusations quite silly. The Ramakrishna Order sees itself as a kind of bastion of respectability.Much of this attitude was probably instilled during the days of British rule.Despite many of the noises made by Vivekananda about his opposition to the British, ironically his Order shows an unmistakable leaning towards British colonial attitudes.
Yogananda was just too radical for their comfort.Yogananda openly revealed esoteric Yoga teachings to the masses, which was after all his purpose. The Ramakrishna Order truly believes that the higher Yoga teachings should be reserved for monks.
We shouldn't really be remotely surprised if we hear biased and detremental descriptions of Yogananda from their members because it is basically a tradition in the Ramakrihna Order.
