I wonder whether there is also caste prejudice involved. This is just a suggestion. Sri Ramakrishna, Vivekananda and a great number - perhaps even the majority - of other famous yogis were Brahmins (I understand that only 1/55 of all Hindus are Brahmins).

Many of them have a sense of superiority that must remain unmatched in human history. But Yogananda was not a Brahmin but born as a Kshatriya, member of the second-ranking caste.

Quite possible that in the case of the Ramakrishna Order the old British colonial attitude and the ultraorthodox Brahmin elitism work hand in hand. Perhaps this goes back to the 19th century when many educated Indians co-operated with the British government in a servile manner, often denouncing their own Hindu traditions. Maybe their descendants have now adopted this mentality, patronizing others etc.
