He watched her as she debated over how to answer his question. He didn't take it as good sign and had to look away. He didn't want her to see the disappointment in his eyes when she told him that yes, she had a husband, kids, a white picket fence, the whole nine yards. It would make him look like a liar. Of course he'd hoped she'd be happy when he had come back. But the idea of it really being with another man hadn't fully settled in his mind, and now that he truly was considering it, it hurt. And it had no right to...he had left.

But she suprised him and shook her head, saying that she had neither. He looked back at her, and the relief that was on his face would almost have been comical in any other situation. The releif was short lived, though, as she voiced that she had a fiance.

But his eyes wandered to the ring. What kind of man would propose to a woman and let her wear another man's ring instead of his own? He swallowed hard, trying to consider the possibilities. If what his heart was hoping was true, she was referring to him. And if not...well, he'd have to live with it. It was his own fault, anyway. "When's the wedding?" He asked carefully. If it was him she was talking about, surely he'd know now. If not...then, he hadn't risked making himself look like a true asshole.
