They boys were spanked far more than girls as small children but it was more theoretical than actual after then. The girls got it less often and far less severely when they were small but many were smacked well into their teens. If I use my cousins, all older than me as an example. All 3 boys were smacked frequently and harshly as small children but I don't think they got a spanking after about 7. One of the girls was never smacked, the other still got in in her late teens. My sister and I started getting spanked again as young teenagers, but our brother did not. I have talked to our mother. She says we were more sneaky, lying etc when teens. But when young we were not but our bother was more openly rebellious, fighting. My sisters and I were all born in the 70's and most of our cousins too. I got my last parental spanking at the age of 10 and it was the same for my male cousins give or take a couple years. But in those younger years I probably got around three spankings for every one that my sisters received. However my sisters continued getting spankings long after mine stopped. From about 13 to 17 they seemed to get a spanking every two to three months. Sometimes more often, sometimes less. This pattern was the same with our cousins. Many years ago this conversation came up during a family reunion. The overall consensus was that the typical boy engages in much more problematic behaviors when younger compared to girls of the same age. Things like fighting, breaking stuff, and outright disobedience. On the flip side, the typical girl becomes more of a problem as a teenager. Issues like disobedience- often in the form of a negative attitude, backtalk, or word games / technicalities- testing boundaries from acceptable outfits to missing curfew with incredulous excuses and selfish or rude behaviors that leave everyone else in the household irritated- such as hogging the bathroom, using all the hot water, constantly being on the phone (much more of an issue in the pre-cellphone era of landlines) and not doing their chores or doing them so poorly they've made more work. I was definitely not a perfectly behaved teenager myself, but with two sisters close to me in age causing our parents more trouble, I came off looking like an angel. I know this is a lot of stereotyping, but the stereotypes exist for a reason and while there are plenty of exceptions, there are also a lot of people who fall right in line with them. I also think things have changed or are changing for many because I didn't have anywhere near the trouble with my daughters when they were teens. But I also didn't try to control them as much. Which I think is the more unspoken part of this; parents have often been more strict and controlling with their teenager daughters as compared to their sons. [ Post a Reply to This Message ]

Boys were spanked much more often than girls at pre-school/primary school age, but then it was usually over by the age of 10 or 11, or at the latest at confirmation, as it was for me (around 14). My sister, my female cousins and some girls from school, on the other hand, often felt the punishing hand of their parents on their bottoms until they were 16 or sometimes even 18. In addition to everything that has already been rightly described here, I believe that it is primarily related to the gender role that was expected of children at the time. While the son's rebelliousness in the teenage years was seen as an exercise for life (the boy should not become a wimp), girls were primarily expected to behave well and be obedient. They were expected to learn to become loving, caring wives and mothers and not to disgrace their families. And until well into the 80s and 90s, parents tried to achieve this with the cane if they thought it was appropriate. In Germany, all corporal punishment of children has been banned since 2000. In this respect, I cannot say what the situation is today. Because if children are actually still being chastised today, nobody talks about it anymore. Teenagers, boys and girls, got spanked far less than younger kids but, as a teen, I was a boy who got spanked, and so did my brothers. In my neighborhood, boys got spanked at all ages. At school in higher grades, boys got paddled ten times more than the girls did. However, as boys got older, we got it more from our fathers, and from male administrators at school. One factor for why girls got spanked is that they tend to be smaller, but it still happened less than boys getting it. It was also a well-known fact that girls matured faster than boys, so they sooner outgrew the need for juvenile kinds of punishment. At least that was the case where and when I was that age. As a teen, I was interested in girls getting spanked, so I was more aware of it than the average person. It definitely happened on occasion, and it was much bigger news for those who heard about it, much less witnessed it in some way. More people are interested in girls getting spanked, maybe because it's rarely seen in real life, and girls appear feminine when showing the vulnerability one is subjected to under strict parental authority. Is it a side of the pond issue. I'm English and Stelter is German, but I think Ross and Marcey are American. You've made so many good points. - Times have changed. When I was a child getting a few slaps in public was uncontroversial but not now. I slapped my niece a couple of years ago and people looked at me like I was some kind of monster. - Not so much my generation but older ones expected girls to be "sugar and spice", and heaven help any who broke that mold. While "boys will be boys" excused a lot. - One other thought. How much of a factor is size. I'm pocket sized about 5 ft 4 (162cm) but dad and all my brothers are well over six foot. But it didn’t take long before they regressed to crying, screaming and kicking 5-year-olds begging Mommy that it hurt and to please stop or not spank so hard. That is, the typical teenage girl will serve her punishment and learn from it better than the typical teenage boy. Hence it makes (some sense) to be more punitive with teenage girls than teenage boys. In addition, the idea of spanking a 16 year old boy who is over 6 feet is not very appealing to a parent. It is known that spanking a child tends to make that child more violent.
