It _could_ be that a standard 575 board will work with just 1 VRAM SIMM, if that's all the memory that's needed. When you increase the resolution, more memory will be needed. DId the system actually work with a 575 board before the video upgrade?

I would _strongly_ recommend that you do no more modifications to a/b or logic board until you have both VRAM SIMM slots occupied. If there's only one slot, it isn't a 575 board! 256Kb VRAMs have 2 chips, 512Kb VRAMs have 4 chips. Please eliminate this possible (admitedly not certain) cause of the problem before looking at anything else.
