this was kind of the point I was trying to make in my recent post on the "Mulder and Scully" board. I think most
people (okay, not "everybody") were drawn to the show because they cared about Mulder and Scully and were intrigued by the relationship between them.
For CC it may have just been about "scary stories", and I'm sure there were a few viewers, especially in the early seasons, who tuned in mainly for that reason. But the vast majority of X-Philes I have "met" over the years (both in person and via the internet) have been more concerned about the various personal issues facing Mulder and Scully (i.e. "Will Mulder ever come to peace with his family's past?" or "Will Scully triumph over her cancer?" and, of course, "Will Mulder and Scully ever become romantically involved?") than they have been about the outcomes, special effects, etc. of any particular episode. Viewers simply didn't connect with Doggett and Reyes in the same way.
