Subject: The view from the back of kande's bike.
In reply to: Kande's Sis 's message, "Yet more family background..." on 18:41:29 07/19/01 Thu

After two days of riding in the back seat of the Subaru station wagon, we finally arrived in Des Moines and, to be honest, I'm just dead-tired. As we pulled into the driveway, kande's dad and uncle were there, puttering with their bikes. Kande slammed on the brakes in the nick of time, making the old fellas grab at their hearts. Kande's dad, having recently suffered a serious concussion of unknown origin (alien abduction is strongly suspected), grabbed in the general area of his appendix. He quacked like a duck, then waved hello.

Kande and SO got out of the car, stretched, and gave hello hugs. They brought me inside and introduced me as that lovable sack o' bones they drag around everywhere. Everyone raved over my new red bicycle helmet and the Team Tough Butts t-shirt that kande made for me. Caffeine free diet cokes were brought out (I can't drink that stuff - it goes right through me).

After a few awkward moments, they finally started discussing kande's sister. What could be done about her? Kande made a strong argument that it was too late - she was a lost cause. Being a parent, her father was reluctant to let go, but finally relented. Ever since KS ran nose-first into a garage on her brother's bicycle, she just hasn't been the same. She is still spreading vicious rumors about kande being bald, when everybody knows it's the brother. And the family has lost count of how many men she's sent into the priesthood!

Then the group went off to a bike shop leaving me in the house with the cat, Patches. Patches stared; I just smiled.

Dinnertime! I didn't go since nothing sticks to these ribs. But I'm sure it was very good. We are now at kande's brother's house. Everyone else is in bed, but I couldn't sleep, so thought I'd report in. Kande and SO are well and looking forward to beginning the bike ride. I am, too. I don't contribute much to the effort - there are those who say I'm just dead weight - but there's nothing quite like feeling the wind blowing through your bones.

I just have to stay away from Team Road Kill next week...
