She is burning with fever and her eyes are glazed over. "Water!" she croaks through a sore and swollen throat.

The small crowd of Shippervillians look at each other. "I'm not going over there," Stardoe says, shifting from foot to foot. "She may be infectious. I'm the Sheriff and need to be available in case there's a ruckus."

CW goes over and delicately prods Kande with a sensibly shod toe. "She's still breathing. Maybe if we prop her mouth open with a funnel we can pour chicken noodle soup down her throat."

"She's vegetarian," KS reminds her.

"Tofu noodle soup then," CW sighs and shudders.

All turn as Rabid re-enters the Klub with Aunt Madge, who is carrying a needle the size of her arm. She cackles with glee when she sees Kande. "Goody! A sick person. I'll patch her right up." She aims the needle at Kande's left eye. "She doesn't have the monkeypox, does she? Because a shot to the eye doesn't do any good if it's that."

"In that case, she'd better hope it's monkeypox," the Mayor whispers to KS. KS decides to take over.

"Look here, you," she motions for Aunt Madge to step aside. "If she's going to be tortured, I get first dibs as her sister." Aunt Madge nods and then the two wrap Kande in a tablecloth so they can drag Kande to the hospital.

"You know," the Mayor muses, "I think Kande keeps getting sick because she's about to turn 40 in 9 days. It's her body's way of rebelling."

"Or just plain falling apart!" Rabid chimes in.

"Don't worry, I'll take care of it," KS tells them all shortly as she and Aunt Madge start to drag Kande out.

"What are you going to do to torture her?" they all hear Aunt Madge ask KS. The group strains to hear KS's reply.

"Oh, I'm not," KS giggles. "Mom's coming to visit Kande in another day or two. I'm going to let her take care of it."
