The hot water seems to take forever getting to the shower in our 1992 WLWB, not to mention the waste of cold water expecially if dry camping. Does anyone else experience this problem and/or have a solution? Thanks.

We had the same problem on our 1980 FC35. Autocirc makes an undersink hot water circulation system that I installed at the sink in the bathroom which is the furthest point from the water heater. I just run the pump for a few minutes in the morning and the water is immediately hot in the shower. This pump runs until it senses hot water and then shuts of. It has a timer and can actually be set to come on automatically. The best price on this unit is from Home Depot they have an online special for $189.00

Hi Chris,
You would be better served by using a home equity loan or home equity line of credit from your existing home (if you have one). Straight-out car loans are tough to get for a collectible vehicle.

Where is the electric solenoid for the propane Supply to the 3 furnaces? Any relays or fuses? Propane tank full, cooktop and propane refrigerator fine. All 3 furnaces worked fine last time used a month ago. Now all 3 only blow cold air. LP heat switch on dash is in on position and green indicator beside switch is on. Must be something to do with solenoid controlled by the dash switch. Thanks. Pat

If it is like my old 83 Bird, as long as the coach is running, plugged into shore power, or the generator is running everything should be fine. You do need to keep an eye on things, a big poopsickle is no fun.

Subject: Rooftop air condensation drip/drain tubes

Author:

Date Posted: 09/ 23/ 17, 11:27pm

1994 Bluebird gets wet in overhead interior storage compartments when AC is running. This unit has 3 original Duotherm Penguin AC units. In my investigation I found where the evaporator trays drip there are actually holes in the roof that catch the water (condensation) and direct it through drain tubes. These tubes are run through the cross section of the roof and the walls and eventually drop the water out near the wheel wells. Quite an elaborate system for sure, but not so good when things age and fall apart.

It's hard to tell without removing the AC units, but it appears to me the seal is compromised between the drain tubes and the aluminum roof. I'm assuming the next step is to remove the AC units and get a good look at things.

In observing/planning AC removal, I can see where the front AC mount studs are in air intake area, but can't see the rear studs. There's a vinyl covered ceiling piece that's part of the air intake. I think I need to remove that, but can't see any obvious fasteners. Has anybody else dealt with this before? Any hints or information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Tim

I am looking to buy a used 1993 Bluebird and was wondering how buyers handle the inspection of the RV? Do you get a certified RV Inspector, kinda like a home inspector, to look at the RV and give you a report? I know when I bought a boat, I got a survey done by a boat inspector. Also what would this inspection cost. I am a newbie to RVs and appreciate the help and comments.

I’ve come across a 1983 PT with 140,000 miles that has been sitting for a while in IN I stopped and talked with the owner about her. He allowed me to look her over, she definitely needs some TLC. He assured me that the engine runs good and the generator runs. But didn’t start either for me. My question is. What would be a fair price to offer him ? Like I said the coach needs a lot of work on the interior and has a few windows that need to be replaced

Checked the archives and the last thread on insurance was back in 2009.

I got a quote from Foremost of $2000 as a part-timer. It seems high for a $75k coach. It may be the million $$$ coverages that I selected, but maybe not. I don't remember what I paid Progressive back in the 90's on my 83 Bird.

I have pockets deep enough to excite ambulance chasers so I thought more was necessary.

Thoughts...recommendations please.

I need help, big time..... 1998 Hatt with 12V92's. I'm deep into a total rebuild and the liners are out and finding no issues with the engine, I have a dilemma that is stumping my mechanic. I wonder if anyone knows why a plug is shoved in the main water jacket located 2:00 of the #4 cylinder hole of the inboard bank of the port engine. 3 other plugs are in three more water jackets. One on the #4 inboard side as well as as well as at 11:00 on #3 cylinders holes on the in and outboard water jackets. From what I've learned, a 12V92 is two 6V92's joined nose to nose so if that is correct, the 4 plugs are located adjacent to # 1 cylinder on both banks of both 6V blocks.
After digging through a bunch of receipts, one eng survey, and some service records left on the boat I recently bought, I learned that this engine continually had heat problems which the prior owners tried chasing down. Also when I was bringing the boat up the coast, I could not exceed 1850 without the temp creeping up. Is it possible these plugs do not belong there? Or is it possible that 4 plugs are too many plugs?
I conferred with a local mechanic and he recalls a Detroit bulletin mentioning between a certain range of serial numbered engines, these plugs were to be inserted to remedy an overheat problem. Could someone have added 2 where the should only be 2 ?
I'm really uneasy about continuing with the rebuild until I know with great certainty what the deal with these plugs are. Can you help ? ? ? PLEASE ?

BTW, these engines are marinized be Detroit, not J&T nor Covington.

By "horn" do you mean the (2) air horns located at the top of the bus? If so, there should be a small foot switch on the drivers side...like an old highbeam switch...this is for the airhorn...according to our blueprints. We have an 82 FC

We are the new owners of a 1982 FC Wanderlodge and are in the process of rehabbing it. It's original owner passed away so we are flying blind. We have all of the blueprints but are having an issue hooking the bus up to 30amp shore power. My husband even direct wired a line from the house to the breaker panel and at best all we got was both roof A/C's and the 110v outlets. We have done everything it has said to do as far as switching the power at the generator to 30amp shore power. We are at a loss. Any ideas on what could be causing us to have no interior lights when hooked to shore power?

We bought a 1988 40 ft Bluebird Wanderlodge. It has a Detroit Diesel 2 stroke engine. We were told Delo 100 30 weight is the best oil for it. The mechanic who changed the oil for us used Delo 400 instead of Delo 100. Should we drain it & change it to the 100 30 weight we asked for? Will it harm anything if we run the 400 for a few thousand miles before we change it to Delo 100? Also when we drain the 400 out should we change the new oil filter also even if we don't drive it with the 400 oil he put in it? It has been idled since the oil change but not driven. Thx

Greetings from Appalachian State University Solar Vehicle Team,
I am lead advisor and coach of our solar vehicle team. I have been researching motorhomes and find Wanderlodges to be the best on the road for safety and longevity. I want one for both my college and high school teams. If one were to become available and fall within our small budget I am considering purchasing one in our future. Short term we are currently working out travel arrangements for the American Solar Challenge (ASC) which is going to be an 8 day 1800+ mile road course traveling through 7 states from Brecksville, OH to Hot Springs, SD. This year the ASC is partnering with the National Park Service for their 2016 Centennial. The ASC route will include stage/checkpoints in 9 national parks, historic sites or partner properties throughout the Midwest. We will also compete at the Formula Sun Grand Prix (FSGP 2016) held at Pittsburgh International Race Complex in Wampum, PA. (This is also the qualifying race for the ASC).

Obviously the team is considering traveling in a motorhome to these events. Students will be sleeping in our race trailer, tents and vans. I see the motorhome as being quarters for coaches, volunteers and home base for safety. Unfortunately, our school transportation department does not have such vehicles so we are currently seeking sponsors willing to provide such support from July 19 - August 9. In return for sponsorship we would be able and excited to advertise the sponsorship throughout all the events and travel during this 3 week endeavor that includes preparation, competition, and return home. We would also setup advertisements on our website, solar vehicle and during our community outreach events throughout the year. If you know anyone interested in this unique marketing opportunity and supporting our efforts to promoting sustainable transportation and STEM education please let us know.

When I set the timing on my injectors, we only rotated the engine a few times by hand using a 1-1/2" socket on the camshaft pulley nut. You will need to obtain a timing tool from DD/Allison unless you already have one.

Hey guys, after seeing a Wanderlodge at a flea market in Nashville, I was fascinated and started researching as one does. I of course happened upon these forums, and am really enjoying the information. So thank you.

I am here in Florida, and lo and behold I came upon a 1977 33' for sale. It seems to be in good interior and exterior condition with a few things that need repaired. Vents, fridge, ac's etc. It has about 99k on it.

I am familiar with RV's having worked on several Airstreams. Is there anything in particular to look for on buying one? What would be a good price to purchase one for if it is in good running condition?

Any help would be greatly appreciated. I am hopeful on joining a new community of enthusiasts. Thanks

I have been lurking around for some time and have some questions about wanderlodge models. We may be downsizing, and a 35' or 36' Wanderlodge may be in our future. I thought about converting a bus, but the wife will kill me, and I don't have a place to do it. I love the look and construction of models before the advent of fiberglass caps and slideouts. So here goes. I've narrowed it down to sp36 or fc35. For the sp 36, are there pass through ext compartments? How many? Where are the fw and holding tanks? Is the fuel tank in front of engine/trans between frame rails? For the fc 35, where are the fw and holding tanks, are the only options twin beds or side full bed? And I know no one likes this question and it is dependent on driveline gear ratios, and weight, but what can you expect in mpg? I know of Detroit engined mcis with 10 mpgs; I have a cat 330 in my 40 ft mh and can get 8 mpg consistently. But I don't know about the 3208? Thanks for letting me lurk and learn!

We are considering buying a 1977 Wanderlodge. Is there anyone who has experience with using an American motorhome in Europe?
Is it better to use a big transformer and gradually change the appliances (any time something breaks down) or is it better to change everything (generator, rectifier/battery charger, inverter, fridge, microwave, airco, you name it... ) to 230 V to start with?

Any suggestion (with arguments) is welcome!

This is somewhat convoluted, but, this is the way it goes: I own a FC-33 1981 Wanderlodge. It came with a Perkins 12.5 KW generator. I live in Connecticut, but visit my daughter in California. My two sons got jobs in California, and live with their sister at her house. I loaned the generator to the brothers for the purpose of fixing up the gnerator and learning about the mechanical and electrical parts of a gen-set. The only ting wrong with the diesel was that it could use a cleaning, and it had a bad bearing in the water pump. I provided a rebuilt water pump for them to install. Instead of fixing it, they tore the diesel into pieces, then lost interest in the whole thing. My daughter, under the influence of her boyfriend, decided to give away the diesel to one of her boyfriend's friends. Give Away - they said. So now I have no diesel to inlcude with the RV when I go to sell it. I have the original bill of sale for the Wanderlodge, but not sure if the diesel numbers are traceable to the RV. To me this would be a way of getting my diesel back as I am the only one with a bill of sale. What can I do? Any help appreciated. Rich

We have a 1988 MCI bus converted to an RV with a 1998 6V92 with a turbo and DDec11. I have problems with keeping the engine running cool enough. The rads were changed and there was no improvement. The water pump was replaced and there was no improvement. I keep the level of coolant right up there. I can get it to run cooler if I open the heat valve some and run the air conditioning all the time, but when it is 30C the interior can't stay cool enough. Can I replace the drive on the squirrel cages with a smaller pulley, if so would that help. Any suggestions.

Cost of ownership- routine repairs and maintenance
I have my sites set on a 1991 wanderlodge. I have reviewed all of the maintenance bills for the past ten years and I have "sticker shock".

It appears that routine maintenance has been about 3,000 per year, with an occasional bill running $5,000 and one even hitting $12,000.
Tune ups and with an oil change hit nearly $2,000. If something was wrong, start at $200 to write up the order.
If you are not at a Blue bird dealership, hit another 500 to $1000 to fabricate tools to work on the engine. It looks like a coach costs a minimum of $6,000 in repairs and maintenance. Factor in depreciation and maintenance, puts another $6,0000 on the number. More troublesome, the CAT engine manual promises a cheap rebuild, which is required at 100,000 miles for an engine with heavy use. Another 15,000 repair bill. The heat system, Primus, is no longer made and parts are not available. Another $5,000 to replace.

I cannot write a $12,000 check without a major cut into my standard of living, (like the current owner). Anyone want to share ownership cost for the 1987 to 1992 36 foot pushers?

Frank

I HAVE A 92 SP36 BLUE BIRD WANDERLODGE SINCE 1999 AND HAVE SPENT A FORTUNE ON THIS COACH BUT LOVE IT! HOWEVER, THERE HAS ONLY BEEN ONE DEATH IN A WANDERLODGE SINCE THEY STARTED BUILDING THEM IN 1963 WHILE ON THE ROAD. IT IS ALMOST IMPOSSIBLE TO BREAK INTO A WANDERLODGE THEY ARE BUILT SO GOOD SO AS A SINGLE WOMAN, I FEEL SO VERY SAFE IN BOTH RESPECTS PLUS MY MOTORHOME DRIVES LIKE ON A CLOUD.

MOST OF MY FRIENDS HAVE COACHES - A WIDE VARIETY AND EACH ONE OF THEM TAKE A TRIP AND UPON RETURN, PLACE IT IN THE SHOP. ALL OF MY MOTORHOMES FRIENDS TELL ME THAT IT COSTS A FORTUNE TO OWN A MOTORHOME REGARDLESS OF THE MAKE, MODEL AND YEAR SO WHO KNOWS?

WOA, Frank, take a deep breath. First, any diesel shop has tools to work on either a Detroit Diesel, Cummings, or Cat engine. No fabrication required. You stated that the Cat engine has to be rebuilt with over 100k miles with heavy use. I hardly suspect that our coaches qualify for heavy use. Primus parts are available. Lets talk more about your perspective purchase. We can always talk about repairs- if needed, later. Tell us about the coach you are interested in.

Echo'ing what Ernie has said, you do not need to fabricate anything. The 100K miles for a cat engine is not a figure for a rebuild, someone has mispoke or you have misunderstood. The supposed Caterpillar recommendation was for replacing the bottom end bearings on 3208's at around the 100K mileage mark on engines in severe duty use (dump trucks, garbage trucks etc.). These birds far from qualify for this. Because of this 100K "urban legend" I had my lower end bearings replaced about 15 years ago and the ones that came out were like brand new. This was with around 140K miles. It was a total waste of money and the shop thought I was crazy for having the bearing replaced in the first place. So, lesson learned, don't believe all urban legends. No special tools needed, no 100K mile rebuild etc. These are good solid machines and the old cat is a great engine which in motorhome use (with proper care) will likely outlast most owners....

Yep, That can happen.
Some times folks have too much $$$ and are afraid to get their hands dirty. (An opinion only).
At about $100 per hour and a few parts replaced , it will add up to about $1000 per day in a truck or RV repair center.
If you are handy with taking care of you own house, the RV part is just some occational plumbing, heating, electrical, If you can change your own oil, & all filters once per year this is a great saving. Have new tires put on every seven years. and you are good to go.
So a 15 year old BB and about 10 to $15K over the first three year period , and you will have lots of fun and a great dependable Motorhome.
Our Cat purrs like a Kitten at over 100,000 miles.

Frank,

Six years ago, I knew very little about RVs and what it took to maintain them. Then I came across a '95 Safari Trek that a friend of mine was selling as part of an estate sale. His father had became terminally ill three years prior and the RV sat unused since. I agreed to help my friend get it ready to sell. With what little knowledge I had at the time, I educated myself. I ended up buying that RV. Today, it is running fantastically. All systems go!

With that in mind, another good friend of mine recently purchased a '79 33' Foward Control Wanderlodge that had been sitting in a state of rot for the past five years. Keep in mind that anything that sits, has a tendency to stay that way. As Newton's First Law states, objects at rest tend to remain at rest. With that in mind, we know that when getting into used RVs, the first couple of years can seem to drain the wallet like a money pit. Think boats. As they say, holes in the water into which one pours money.

That said, there's value in both knowledge and Wanderlodges. These are no cheap rigs. Folks who see them still ask questions about them. There is a certain "cool factor" in owning one. But owning one doesn't come without a certain cost of ownership. They do have to be maintained.

When I bought my Safari Trek, I knew very little about RVs. I work for a major airline so I know a thing or two about airplane systems and the physics behind those systems. RVs aren't really all that different than airplanes, believe it or not. While that made it somewhat easier for me to grasp the concepts of RV systems, anyone can learn them. I don't do diesel engine repair so that work gets farmed out at as Bill wrote, $100 an hour. My buddy who just bought the '79 33' FC recently dumped almost $5,000 in the engine side of the RV. But then there is still the house side to consider. We just replaced the refrigerator ourselves. While there was an expense, we saved a lot of money by knowing a thing or two about RVs. I feel that all owners of older, pre-owned RVs should know how the systems work and how to repair and maintain them. Great places to start are Woodall's RV Owner's Handbook by Gary "The RV Doctor" Bunzer and Trailer Life's RV Repair and Maintenance Manual by Bob Livingston. Both books are very handy and informative. To a point. If you want to know more, I suggest checking out what I did. I took a distance learning course on RV repair and maintenance. It is taught by Gary Bunzer. Check out:

http://www.northampton.edu/distancelearn/programs/rv_default.htm

for more information. I believe that the more you can do yourself on RVs, the more affordable and enjoyable having an RV becomes. Maintaining your RV yourself brings the whole RV lifestyle full circle. You not only get to enjoy your RV when things work, troubleshooting and correcting becomes a hobby itself. Think about how you can help your fellow RVers while on the road! I got into this thing full speed. If my airline job tanks, I have RV repair to fall back on.

If you decide to check out the distance learning course, write to Gary Bunzer and mention my name. Bruce McCoy. He knows who I am!

Anyway, Frank, you can either afford this rig or you can't. You'll have to decide that for yourself. I always like to tell people that there is an RV for every budget. Everything from the smallest pop-up camper trailer to the largest diesel pusher. Only you will know what you can afford to purchase, operate and maintain. I hope that you can snag this 'lodge you are looking at. Keep in mind though, it will need to be maintained.

Best of luck,
Bruce. (For Tom the owner,)
'79 33' FC

I have had my 86 38' pusher for a year and because it was well cared for before I purchased it I have not had to spend much. I have had it serviced (oil/filter, air filter, lubed) and have spent less than $700. It runs well and I think if a person keeps up with it, like anything else, it should not cost huge amounts to keep it rolling down the road. This is the best RV I have ever had.

Hello, I have been a reader of this forum for a few years but this is my forst post. I guess I dont fit the typical Blue Bird owner profile but thats ok I guess. Im 30 years old, married with a 2 year old little girl. my grandfather has owned Bluebirds for quite some time now and I have always dreamed of traveling with my family someday in a Bluebird. He is getting to the age that he is not sure he will be using his Bird much more and it has been sitting about 3 years. He knows my interest and has expressed interest in selling me his Bird. We are heading out to get it out of storage tomorrow and look it over. It has had the same diesel sitting for the last 3 years or so in it. Is there anything you guys would reccomend adding to the fuel before it is started or any other reccomendations before starting a Bird after sitting for that time? What other things should I look at? I already know its due for a full set of tires and an oil change. Any advise is much appreciated. This is a 1996 BMC 37' Cummins. About 60k miles on the rig. Thanks in advance.

It is intermtant at this stage.
I have checked the flywheel and harmonick balancer
Iam woundering if the drive gears for the supercharger could be the problem.

The furnaces do not have a pilot. They ignite after a few safety measures are tripped. When you turn on the furnace, a blower should immediately turn on. This trips a sail switch and then you should hear a loud "click" a within 10 seconds as the gas valves open. Give me a call at 717-645-4912 and I can talk you through removal and testing.

We have a 1994. From the beginning all of our windows were difficult to open. It has gotten progressively worse. We are now at the point where we simply cannot open them. They simply will not budge. Any known fixes/suggestions?
Thanks in advance.

I've found a product at wal-mart called "white lightning" bicycle chain lube that works well. It is a bluish liquid that dries into a white teflon powder and lubricates the tracks pretty well. I would not use it on a black window frame, but if you have the silver aluminum frames, it works great. On black metal frames, it may be better to use graphite, which is also black.

Thank you so much for the suggestion.
Will that work if we use it on the closed window?? The problem is that the windows will not budge.

We got our bluebird last year. It had been setting at least 15 years and the guy we got it from said he hadn't been able to bleed the brakes. We had it towed home and have not tried driving it yet. My husband bled the brakes once and then after it sat awhile they were spongey again.
Did models this old have an air tank to assist the brakes. There is a tank under the dinette that looks like it might be connected somehow to them. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

Hello helpful guys and gals, I am hoping someone can point me in the right direction. We have inherited a 1969 Bluebird bus, with a kitchen (converts to bed), bathroom, 4 "bunks", and a rear master bedroom which features a fold-down futon type couch. The interior is certainly "used" (we came across Canada in it when I was a child!) but it's still livable. I lived in it for a year in 2007. It hasn't ran since 1995 (to my knowledge) and I think it would be safe to assume the engine will need rebuilding or replacing. I don't have the means to have it rebuilt before selling. Is it worth anything more than scrap metal? I don't know where I should be pricing it at. I do have all the registration papers and whatnot, I just don't know where to start. Thanks for your help, I appreciate it! -Lydia

Is it a Wanderlodge or a converted school bus? If it is a Wanderlodge, it may have some residual value for parts or be worth restoring to the right person. Converted schoolbuses might be a little harder to sell.

Hi Buck- It would depend on a lot more than just engine hours. Type of oil used, history of engine use/overheat incidents, age of thermostats and if engine was dry-docked when not in use. My original 6V92 has around 5,500 hours on it and is over 30 years old. Coolant and oil are tested regularly to make sure that pH is within spec and that coolant is not leaking into crankcase via o-rings on cylinder liners. I change the thermostats and flush cooling system every 100K miles.

Dan- I think it may be hard to accomplish this in the eastern US due to underpass height restrictions. It would be far cheaper to hire a driver, buy them a plane ticket and pay for the coach fuel.

I am looking at a heavy 65' trawler, in excess of 100 tons, and powered with the 750hp 8V92's. My intention would be to run around 1000-1100 rpm, which should give me 8-9 knots. I know that unlike 4 stroke diesels, these engines need to run at higher rpm for at least part of a cruising day. Most of the time, the boat is just going to be a live aboard, especially with the current price of fuel Do you have any idea of the fuel consumption of these engines at 1000-1100rpm. Thanks

We have had an 85 PT36 with a 6V92TA silver block engine for rather more than twenty wonderful trouble free years, Alaska, Labrador, &, & etc.
Due to human frailties it has not been started for over a year. If it was an aircraft gas piston engine under similar conditions I would normally pull plugs and pre-oil cylinder walls and then using aux external oil pump splice into the lub system and pressurize before attempting a start. The installation in the back of the PT36 is a bit daunting not even counting aforesaid frailties. Does anyone have any suggestions or experience of possible damage resulting from start-up after such long non-operation?

From what I know about the 8v92,lack of use is some times a death warrant for these old engines. You probably will have enough lubrication, but make sure there is no water in the oil,and as a precaution have the anti freeze changed. These engine's have a (wet sleeve)system. If the anti freeze deterorates, the sleeves are bad to rust thru. That is a major reason that you see lower milage coaches advertised for sale with a note that says"engine recently over hauled" In buses and trucks that were kept on the road,500 thousand miles was not unheard of on these engines, but in seldom used applications ,failures under 100 thousand are not uncommon.

If yours is like our PT36 (I think it is), open up the engine compartment and on the left side you will see some valves (Sporlan). These control the heating portion of your rig. The switches are on the overhead over the driver's seat.
I took mine out and put regular plumbing shut off valves on mine.

I have a 1988 DDEC I which has lost power. It shows up as a loss of turbo boost but the boost sensor is good and the gauge is correct. When I accelerated when things were working the boost gauge sprang to the top boost. Now it gradually works it's way up and tops out around 12-15 pounds max. It used to be closer to 20.
Everything related to the engine itself is fine (even put in a new engine) so it's electronics related. It's a CC conversion and there is a large black box with a cage front that contains some unknown electronics in addition to the DDEC module in the front, the ATEC module behind it and the fuel control box in the engine.
It has been to dozens of repair facilities but Steward & Stephenson in Dallas screwed it up even further as the exhaust temperatures are now way too high and I have to drive hills using my pyrometer as a gauge of how fast I can go (which is not very fast these days). If anyone has any info, wiring diagrams or suggestions I would be most appreciative.
