In reply to: Toklas 's message, "Re: What upgrades can I get for an F4?" on 16:22:40 04/07/03 Mon

I aggree with Toklas completely, except maybe in his ordering of their importance.... So I'll add my own personal touch. ;)

1. Barrel-Which you've already done. The object of this game is to mark the other player, this is accomplished with accuracy over anything else. (BTW glad to see you happy with it!)

2. Powersource- There are several parts to this so stay with me ;)

N2- If you go to HPA, Compressed Air, N2 or Nitro (all the same thing).
-Better consistency in all weather.
-Tighter velocities=Improved accuracy
-Easier to regulate/gauge shots left etc.
-No co2 problems (shootdown, beatdown, freezing seals etc.)

-May be less easy to find in your area.
-May be above your budget right now? However tanks are cheap these days.

Co2- If you stay with co2, Expansion chambers are your best friend (you do get cold weather in Florida right? Lol, if not I still found better performance in warm Ca weather). Co2 Regulators are available (at the cost of a low end N2 tank) and Remote lines also leave more room for expansion, allowing less chances for co2 related problems.

-Probably the set up you already have.
-The F4 runs great on it (great valve)
-No hydrotesting (am I correct here?)

-Beatdown, shootdown, spiking, freezing etc.
-"Good" Co2 set up=N2 set up (in cost)

3. Hopper - Ball chops will be dramatically cut by the addition of an electronic hopper that can keep up with your rate of fire. I reccomend the Viewloader line, rugged, dependable, and in many styles (Vl 12 volt is what I use).

4. 2x Frame - Now that you can put paint where you want it consistently and with little problems, why not put more of it out? You'll not only find an increase in overall rate of fire, but you'll get more balls out when you snap shoot etc.

5. My list of worthless upgrades include Venturi Bolts and HVC's. (With the exception of many Venturi recock related problems) They usually have no negative effect on your gun, however they do manage to lighten your wallet (And get in the way of your barrel, I have a shaved down HVC if you really want one that bad, it won't fit on your gun with your CP barrel).

Buying quality paint and keeping your gun well maintained will also help overall.

However nothing you bolt on to this gun will help you win a tournament, playing skills are more important. In fact I could list things that would help you much more in the grand scheme of things (but you didn't ask!). So if you're interested in learning a few ways to do better (playing wise) let me know!

Mav

P.S. I am entering my first tournament this weekend (although I've been playing speedball for five years now...). Other than the powersource, hopper, and barrel (which I'm buying right now) my gun is a stock minimag... So I don't buy into the goodies will improve game theory!

P.P.S. Just FYI my backup F4 has a CP barrel and expansion chamber on it. However I will use it without pause if the need be.
