Why oh why has no one though it worth their while to write a review of the Halle's superb concert. No I won't do so as most of my friends, (and others), know I have always been a devoted Halle fan and could be suspected of bias. Even if those of you who are not ardent Opera fans, or are amongst those southerners who don't recognise or respect the great Halle tradition, you must accept that having been let down on most of the past few Halle visits when it clearly was in the doldrums, it was on this occasion back to its glorious best. The Overture was a wonderful start and indeed the entire night was most enjoyable. The Orchestral playing was in the first rank and their Leader must be amongst the best that any Orchestra has today, I could not take my eyes off her most of the night.
As to Mark Elder, shades of Malcolm Sargent, did he not look quite a bit like him at times and was he not most gracious and modest all night, a great conductor indeed.

Yet from the Promenaders, nothing, not a "dicky bird". Well well, am I experiencing yet again Southern bias, or is it jealousy. Is it the case again of the chap, when I was extolling the virtues of one of our Orchestras outside London, who said, "Yes, we have some quite good Orchestras in the Provinces". Quite good indeed!

Come on now, lets have some fair play and let some of you speak out for those "provincial" Orchestras, especially the Halle.

Regards to all, see you in "the Queue" shortly,

Derrick Fawsitt.
