If J78 and J79 are there, re-instate the cut at pin 20, and do the second half of the 'normal' conversion.

The 4nF is never a 'make or break' mod - it only improves display size/geometry. Only attempt if you have a display that is too narrow after you've adjusted out the pincushion distortion.

The Hi-Res mod is probably easier than the VGA one, as you say, but the VGA one places less strain on components. You can always switch to VGA by reversing the Hi-Res mode first, THEN CHECKING THAT THE NORMAL 512 x 384 screen is fine again, then doing the VGA mod.

You have checked on Jack's coment that you have two VGA SIMMs installed? Two 256Kb or two 512Kb will be fine (latter gives more colour depth), but you need two identical SIMMs, AFAIK.

hth,

Stuart.
