She scarcely breathed as he spoke, sitting stock still and staring straight ahead and not looking at him. "Yeah, that's what I was asking," she confirmed and became silent. He too had hesitated. He'd answered in similarly round-about terms. She had her suspicions about him now, but she would try not to make them known to him. If, like she believed, he had more than a casual awareness of the oddies, and was one himself...

Ugh. Her thoughts were moving a million miles ahead of her, as usual. She couldn't force him to tell her anything, and besides, why would he want to confide in her? She was the one actively concealing, in her mind anyway. She decided not to ask anymore of him. What she wanted to know was private. He'd just met her, what made her think that he would tell her any of his secrets when she wouldn't tell him hers? Now, how to change the subject? Talk about the weather? Sports? But the weather was uncooperatively average at the moment, and she didn't follow sports. Shit. This was another one of those awkward moments! Say something. "I didn't mean to pry." Eh. Close enough.
