As they drove, he fell silent, trying to process what was happening. How could he explain to her why he'd left without sounding totally and utterly heartless? He glanced at the scenery out of the Audi's window, almost timid to look at her. The woman honestly looked like an angel to him...she always had. Had he ever truly known how lucky he was, all those years ago? He thought not...he'd been young and arrogant.

He looked back at her as she began to slow the car on the shoulder of a quiet road. He noticed her ring then, still on her left hand...and his heart clenched painfully. That she would still even own the ring that symbolized the feelings he had for her was astounding to him.

"Laurie.." He began, brow furrowed as his mind grasped frantically for how to begin. "You gotta understand, I didn't mean for it to be so long." His gaze rose to lock with hers. "Tumbler and Sphinx called a meeting. Sphinx had heard the feds were going to raid the house." He remembered how freaked out he'd been, seeing the worry on the faces of two men he'd thought were fearless. "They said if we didn't get far awat from here, that everyone would go down. I figured they'd be gunning for me...I chopped the stock, after all." To this day he didn't know how he'd managed to fly under the radar for as long as he did. "I could handle that, if it needed to go down that way. But to think of them taking you? You didn't ask for that kind of trouble. You were at risk and it was my fault for bringing you into it." He sighed, sinking in his seat slightly. "I guess I figured I'd done you enough damage...put you at enough risk. Laurie, you were always so good to me...and I never deserved it." He desperately wanted her to understand, but doubted she would. He wouldn't, if he were her. "I thought you'd move on. Find someone safe. I'm sorry."
