Prior to her disappearance, Rabid would not allow KS to shelve books unless she did something with her hair.

"You're just not a proper librarian without a bun," Rabid had informed her primly, patting her own large, reddish wad of hair on the back of her head.

"But I don't have enough hair yet for a bun," KS complained, kicking at a magazine stand and earning yet another reproving look from the main librarian. Rabid turns and opens the librarian junk drawer, rifling in the mess until she finds what she wants. She holds it up with a bright smile.

"This will solve the problem," she informs the fledgling librarian, snapping it on her head like a latex glove.

KS turns and looks at herself in the mirror hidden behind the office door. "It's a hairnet," she whines. "I look like a dork."

"Exactly!" Rabid beams at her protegee'. "It's the look to which all librarians aspire!"

KS glances at her suspiciously. She remembers the website JD had shown her of tattooed librarians. All the librarians she's known have been intelligent and hip. Even Rabid sang rock songs at the top of her lungs prior to opening. KS glances down at the shapeless cardigan, the plaid wool skirt with the uneven hem, and the blouse buttoned to the top of the neck. Her hose sags and she has on black sensible shoes. Why does she feel that Rabid is forcing her into a long-retired stereotype just for the heck of it?

Kande had come and taken a picture of her Sis in her new librarian look for the Noromo Gazette. Once she stopped laughing and rolling around on the floor, it had been too dark to take the photos. KS had left in a huff, leaving Rabid to shelve books by herself.

Now KS sits at the reference desk, looking at an old photo of Rabid. She sniffs and wipes a tear from her face.

"If only I hadn't left her alone that night!" she whimpers softly to herself. "Then I wouldn't have to shelve all these books by myself."
