I am planning to visit the Sampson Museum in the next month, both to see the exhibits and to try and locate a photo of my father's graduating class at NTC Sampson. Is there any way to determine my father's company and unit while at NTC Sampson? He was named Samuel Sirko, and he arrived at Sampson on 22 June 1945. He appears to have completed recruit training on 5 September 1945. Is there a chance that his information appears in the transcribed portions of the unindexed microfilmed Sampson files? He was inducted into Navy service at Naval Recruiting Station, Pittsburgh, PA on and 8 June 1945 and reported for active duty 21 June 1945. Any help or advice you can provide will be greatly appreciated! Great site by the way!

One appears to be a partial roster provided by "Sampson WW-2 Navy Veterans, Inc" in 1997 of Company 203, Unit D, From March 19, 1944 - May 1, 1944 - I also have an accompanying photo of Company 203. I'm Willing to share these upon request. The other record was a "Notice of Separation From U.S. Naval Service". His service was from 3/18/1944 - 2/3/1946. This form shows he was a Seaman 1st Class (SV-6 USNR) ; Remarks: AL NAV 6-46, American Theater Ribbon, Victory Medal ; Service: USNTS Sampson, NY , R/S NTD Washington, D.C. I am pretty ignorant to a lot of the abbreviations so was looking for help in understanding the following: 1) AL NAV 6-46? 2) R/S NTD Washington D.C.? 3) Is it possible to tell what specific ship, if any, that he served on based on the company, unit, date, medals, etc.. provided? 4) If so - What was there primary tasks during the war Any information or direction would be greatly appreciated. I am researching art and mural programs in US military and naval training bases between 1941 and 1945 for a book. I have seen your illustrations of humorous murals on the walls of the various hospital wards, but wonder whether you have any further information? Perhaps unscanned issues of SAMPSON NEWS might have details of the artist(s), when they were painted, etc. I assume none survive on the walls of the ruined hospital?

I have several items from Sampson training 1944-45: Booklet about the U.S. Naval training center at Sampson written by Robert Shapien, NY Herald Tribune; Photograph of QM School Class 645, Dec. 26, 1944; mimeographed booklet titled "The Salts: Memories of QM 6-45." My father was there for basic in June, 1944 and QM Dec 1945. Will send all to you carefully packaged at my own cost if the museum wants them. Please provide name and address.

Recently found out my father enlisted in the Navy on 17 April 1945. He was 14 yoa and enlisted under the name of Thomas Aloysius Scanlon. He reported 28 May 1945 and did Basic at Sampson, graduating as a Seaman Second. He was enroute to Cavite PI when his age was discovered and he was honorably discharged. He was discharged 5 Sept 1945. Trying to find what class he may have been in. I figure he may have graduated sometime in July considering the training cycle of the time. Also curious what MOS he had from his training. His discharge shows sea duty, I'm guessing he did not have enough time in the PTO to be eligible for that ribbon. He was awarded the Victory Medal and American Campaign medal. Any help would be greatly appreciated

I know his Service # is 8125428 and he enlisted on July 9 1943, but I'm not 100% sure what day he graduated. I think he was in company 311, but again, I'm not 100%. Anything would be so much help!

My father, Llewellyn M. Parlette, trained in amphibious landing procedures at Sampson before being deployed to England from where participated in the Normandy Invasion on D-Day +6, I believe. I am creating a book for my grandfather’s birthday with the letters he wrote during WWII. His name is Robert Dale, he was in U.S.N.T.C. F20 CO. 439. From September 1944 til Nov 1944. Then in December 1944 he returned and worked in Mess Hall, unit H (OGU BIO U). Then went to service school command, electrian’s mate school (E.M. 13-45) until April 1945. Subject: DeLillo in late 1944 in database?

He spelled our last name a few different ways back then (for some weird reason!). His birth certificate and all my Grandfather's records have DiLillo. As a teenager my father used that spelling along with DeLillo and DeLillio; eventually deciding to use the 'e' instead of the 'i'. Anyway, I can send an image of his discharge papers which have the spelling you have plus the same serial number. What other information do you have?? Super grateful for your efforts. I lived with a family that had a cousin, Steve Backner that trained at Samson prior to D-Day. He related some stories of landing troops ashore only to see them shot to pieces. I did not ,notice anything on this website that references this type of training. Also, while at NAS Sanford, Fl., (1061)I spoke to a sailor that was sent to Boot Camp at Samson. Needless to say, that base was already closed. This man was put in a hotel nearby awaiting the recruiter to come from Horseheads, NY. Only problem was that the recruiter only came on Tuesdays! Subject: Looking for info on two uncles in the Navy WWII

I know this is a long shot, but I am looking for information on two uncles i had in the Navy. One during WWII and the other a little after. The one I am most interested in learning more about is my uncle in the war. My mother's brother, who his wife has passed and the had no kids. I remember going to his funeral in the mid 80's and I was 16 or so. There was a newspaper article that on him about his service that his shipmate brought. No one really knew this man who served with him,or about my uncle's service. He never talked about the war of the topic of the article. It was about my uncle, Shoffner Meadows, who served on a mine sweeper was responsible for sinking a U-Boat. Mom doesn't know the name of his ship. I have searched to no avail. Can someone steer me in the direction to find how to obtain his records or information on him? Thanks so much

My dad turned 18 in April 1945, enlisted and had to report to Sampson before his high school graduation. So he would have been at Sampson around early May to maybe July? Not sure how many weeks one trained here. I remember him telling me they spent some time playing baseball once their training was done. Then he was in Philadelphia awaiting a ship to be commissioned. I have no idea what unit he was in here, and he died in 2007. Is there a way to find out?

I just came across a picture that belonged to my grandfather, Fred Menard. He passed way many many years ago. The picture appears to be a fire station with B-25 on the top of the building. I know my grandfather was in the Navy and at sometime a fireman and then was a coal man on a train. The back of the picture has posted Courtesy Public Relations Office, Naval training station, Sampson, N<Y<, CREDIT LIE MUST READ, U.S. NAVY OFFICIAL PHOTO.

If the museum would like this picture, please let me know. I'd be happt to send it to you with a picture of my grandfather.

I am researching information on my grandfather's ship, USS Forrest DD-461/DMS-24. His ship was moored next to the USS Natrona on the 28th and 29th of May 1945 at Kerama Retto after being damaged by kamikaze attacks on 27May1945. Your website lists a number of men transferred from the Natrona; my Question is do you have or know of a list of these crewmen transferred off the Forrest on 28/29May1945? (Crewmen from the USS Braine were also being transferred since both ships were damaged on 27May)

My grandfather, Jim Hobizal, we believe was on the SS Lykes at that time. We have afew award certificates (Polllywog or Shellback) but they don’t have signatures on them from other servicemen. One is dated January of 1944. If yours has signature would love to see if our grandpa is there. We have very little from him as he passed shortly after his return home from Service.

My father was in the Navy in WWII. I know he trained at San Bruno. I remember seeing pictures of him with a group dressed like soldiers or marines. I always thought that was strange since he was in the Navy. He never talked much about the mission he was on at the end of the war. I found out after he died that he had been with the amphibious unit that was set to invade the coast of Japan. He used to joke that he rode a magic carpet one time, when we would see anything about the Arabian Knights. I didn't know the significance until I read about the operation to pick up service men throughout the South Pacific that was called Magic Carpet. From what I read the whole mission they were on to invade Japan was to be kept secret and I'm sure they told them that at the time. He never revealed much about that. He said that they were ready to leave on a mission and had been told that most of them would probably die, when they heard that Japan had been bombed. I would like to know if anyone remembers my father or could give me any information about his service. His name was John Baxter Harrill S1/C. He may have been called Shorty or J.B.

During my visit to the wonderful museum at Sampson, we found my brother Zane, listed on the Muster Roll..12/31/1943. The docent was kind enough to make a copy for me to take home, which I thought was very generous. I was told that I could go to a website and track his deployments, during the war. I know that he spent his time in the Pacific Theater.
My question: could someone provide me with the website that I was told of? I wrote it on a piece of paper that was misplaced.
Or a phone number for the museum, so that I could talk to someone there. Thank you in advance, for any help.

For Memorial Day a couple of friends and I decided to go to Sampson Veterans Memorial Cemetery to pay our respects. While in the area we saw the Sampson WWII Museum sign and decided to go through it. While there I realized my father might have gone there for training. When I got home I found his Sampson Company 160 photo from February 29, 1944. His name was Edmund F. Landwersiek and he served in the Philippines during WWII on PT Boat 324, Ron 21. He passed away four years ago and was proud to have been in the Navy but rarely talked about the war. I followed in his footsteps and served in the Navy also. Thank you, the Sampson WWII Museum and the Sampson Memorial Cemetery for keeping the memories alive.

The S.S. Young America took us aboard at Namur Island on Feb 10th or 11th in i944. The Fourth Marine Div. Invaded the Roi and Naumr Islands (Marshalls) on Feb 2, 1944. It was the first action for the 4th Div. We were transported back to Maui,Hawaii for refit and more training. I believe the ship was a passenger ship in pre-war days. I am trying to find a suitable picture to add to a family/war history that I am preparing.

I liked the Young America better than the APA ships that I had been associated with. My division left Maui and were taken by an APA to Saipan and Tinian in the Marianas.

If you can direct me to a picture I would be pleased.

Hello, everyone.
I do a bit of genealogy, but was also fortunate enough to grow up enjoying frequent visits with my grandfather, and hearing some tales firsthand. To my regret, I lost him several years ago, and he is sorely missed. If anyone served with Joe Cottrell, either while in boot as a trainee or as a fellow shipmate on the USS Casco, I'd love to hear from you.
For anyone that is interested, I have a very nice photo of the US Naval Training center class of 23 May 1945, Company 228. Also, I have a muster roll from the USS Casco, AVP-12 listing most of his fellow mates. Just email me, I look forward to your messages.

This may sound like an odd request, but does anyone by any chance have a list of the men in the Sampson Training Center, Company 259 in October 25, 1944?

My father, Edward Donald Leahy, who died in 2001, served in the Navy during WW2. I have been trying to research his side of the family, who he had been estranged from by the time I was born. So far, I�ve come up with nothing. There seem to be no records of him before the 1950s. However, a genealogist found records of another man, Edward Donald Simmons who had the same birthdate, birthplace, as well as the same names for his father, mother, sister and brother. I am trying to find out if Simmons and Leahy are one in the same, which might prove that my father changed his name after the war.

One old photo I have from him shows him in a group photo from the Sampson Training Center. The caption includes the date �October 25, 1944� and �Co. 259�..

If I could get a hold of the names of the men in Company 259, I could see if it includes Edward Donald Leahy or Edward Donald Simmons!
