Traveller scowled. He was still riled and wanted to fight, but his initial rage had subsided and he was starting to feel half ashamed. The old fox was right. He should have helped his mother right away. But how could he have? It wasnt as simple as that. Bounder and Warrior could have killed Branberry. And the biggest blue son of Scarface had mentioned other prisoners. This wasnt just a case of Traveller defending his parent. His mate, her relatives and friends were mixed up in this too. Traveller did not believe a word of the blues, despite having been neutral up until this incident. However, his sharp ears had picked up what the wise greyblue foxs had missed; Branberry could be contagious. Perhaps she wasnt but there could be some truth in what Bounder was saying. Traveller bristled and walked over to his mate and his mother, passing Warrior and Bounder with hackles raised. He had good hearing but had chosen to ignore his mothers remarks. He was not so worried now. The blues were outnumbered with Fox Dreamer and himself, not to mention the stranger who seemed to talk rationally even if Traveller was irritated by it. The danger to Branberry was gone at any rate. And if the blues threatened their prisoners, perhaps the reds could take some prisoners of their own.

Branberry hauled herself to her feet with considerable effort. Every movement made her want to lie down and shut her eyes but felt inclined to move after the encouragement from the greyish bluefox with the tatty ear. She still was full of doom about her fate, but there seemed to be a spark of hope. The red vixen would dearly have enjoyed backtalking to the blues but she needed to conserve every atom of strength to stand. She tried to look defiant but her blue eyes were glazed and her vision was blurring. She tottered forward a step. She had no idea where she was meant to be going but she wanted to get away. She would rather waste away or die of illness than be torn up by blue enemies.
