[ooc: blegh, sorry for the crappy post. =P it's early and I haven't woken up yet. xD]

"Mmhmm. I am pretty persistant, its a habit that came with the job. Slight misunderstand huh? Those are never fun and never seem to end well."

Max's thoughts left the present for a moment and floated back to the events of the night before- the fight at the bar, Max taking refuge in an alley to get his breath back, having that same idiot of a guy teetering into the same alley shortly after, probably answering to "nature's call", or because he'd also been thrown out by the owner, followed by Max's somewhat frenzied attack, and the man now lying behind a dumpster in seperate pieces not looking so great. "I guess you could say that." he said with an absent-minded smirk, as if remembering an old inside joke. Secretely, though, he thought that they, well, they were sometimes a bit of fun. Or maybe it was just the rush of adrenaline in the spur of the moment that he found appealing. Otherwise, yes, it was pretty crap most of the time; Max wasn't a very big guy, a bit on the lanky side, and in a confrontation was easily outsized or outmuscled.

"No dear, not narcotics. But if I catch you doing something like that, we will have to have a small talk, just you and me."

"I'll have to watch my back then, wouldn't I? But I like the sound of 'just you and me'." he said teasingly back at her, taking another drag on his cigarette. Max was beginning to enjoy this. He saw her hand go up to catch a few locks of hair the wind had been blowing around, and wished she'd just leave it. He liked the "messy black hair" look. The night wind was beginning to get quite cold- he wanted to take her somewhere inside, a pub or cafe or something, to get out of the wind instead of loafing around on the street corner all night like hustlers, but he couldn't really offer her anything as he'd spent the last bit of money he had on him on alcohol and cigarettes. Damn him.

"You are quite the curious one."

Max laughed, inhaling on his cigarette. "I like to know who I'm associating with. It's a habit that comes with the job." he joked, repeating what she had said to him, though felt like kicking himself. What job? He hoped she wouldn't ask, because, plainly put, he didn't really have an answer for her.

"Can you keep a secret? I work for the FBI, and I'm kinda on here on paid "vacation". That however, is as much as I can tell you doll."

She'd winked at him. Did that mean that the "I can't tell you" rule was subject to change? Or that she was just leading him around by the nose? Or perhaps she was one of those special cops he'd heard about who ran after vampires and werewolves and shit, but kept it a secret from "ordinary civilians". Max could tell her that he wasn't an "ordinary civilian", but then again, compared to some of the things you found here in Cascade, he wasn't particularly special either. He was just "so-so", and it annoyed the life out of him. Max wasn't one for grey in-between areas. Something either was or wasn't.

"Aw c'mon, ya can't leave it at that now?." he said in a pretend-whining voice and gave a small laugh, and decided to test his boundaries a bit. "Does it have anything to do with, well, the "oddities", as they call them, that live here in our midst?" he asked her slowly, formulating the question in his head as he spoke, the tiniest sly look crossing his eyes. "How was that? Hot or cold?"
