Branberry had seen the advancement of another young blue with horror. This was it. After all her years, after crossing town roads and surviving many births of cubs and running from pet dogs, it was all going to end with her being ripped up, too weak to defend herself, by blues with nothing better to do. Ironiclly, it wasnt even her war, not really. If the farthing Fox hadnt been famous and she had met a blue instead of Vixen on her first day in white deer park, she could have just have easily been on side with these two blues. And, to make it more ironic, they were both males, the whole purpose of her travelling to the park.
Branberry shuddered. What a waste it all had been! She had met no mate in this park, let alone one with an impressive family history. Instead she had got ill, got ugly, got mixed up in a war and ended up in a ditch surrrounded by enemies. She considered calling for help, but who would come to save an outsider? Her death would just be part of life. Every fox for itself, she thought in her typical town way.
From the ditch, the red vixen heard another growl. This one sounded more menacing than the mockery of the two blues. Could it be Scarface himself? Branberry couldnt see but she felt sure it would be another enemy. Fear gave her some strength and she hauled herself onto her frount legs. She hauled herself along the ditch floor, inch by inch, hoping they wouldnt notice.
