Bounder had parted from Moonbeam to wander alone, thinking. There were some questions he had to find answers for. One was 'how was his family?' Bounder had decided to look for them. He wandered past a ditch when he caught scent of another animal. He raised his hackles in case it was an enemy, then his eyes caught a flash of red in the ditch.
Bounder walked toward it, snarling menacingly. Most reds where enemies and even those on his fathers side were slightly untrustworthy, in his eyes anyway. As he got closer, Bounder recognised the red. It was the female who had appeared to back up that annoying red vixen Stormy. Bounder frowned. What was she? Stormys mates sister and mother to the captive cubs? Something like that. In any case, Bounder felt he had the upper hand. The vixen looked weak and the blue male lept into the ditch, preparing to kill her. She was a proven enemy. Bounder went to rip at the vixen, but something held him back. Perhaps he had lost his bottle, prehaps it was compassion, prehaps sportsmanship or perhaps it was the fact that the females fur was patchy. Bounder found himself remembering another fox looking like that, during the time he had been out of the park.
Bounder stopped in his tracks and backed up a pace. If this vixen had what that other fox had, then she was infected with a contageous form of mange and Bounder didnt fancy getting that. He wasnt sure how ill it made you, but it certainly weakened the immune system. The enemy red looked half dead.
The blue male lept out of the ditch, finding himself in a bad situation. If he killed the vixen, it would look cowardly. To kill one so unhealthy looking wasnt a fighting chance. Bounder didnt mind outnumbering a healthy animal or tricking it or attacking when its back was turned, but somehow sickness made it different. He could simply injure the red, but that would nvole contact. He might catch the desise. On the other paw, if he didnt kill the female then he was a coward, a traitor to his family, a yellow bellied weasel not fit to call himself the son of Scarface.
Bounder was not stupid. He didnt intend to put himself in the wrong. He needed another opinion. He held back his head and barked for assistance, all the time watching that the vixen stayed put. He waited for an ally to answer. Anyone would be welcome assistance. Ideally, his father could tell him what to do, but anyone would do. Even a weed like Ranger would be a second opinion. Bounder did not cinsider that he could attract the vixens allies instead. He assumed that any friend of the red would have given up on her, especially now he was on the scene.
