POLLS ABOUT EXTREME MEDICAL EXAMS IN KIDS OR ADULTS , ins schools, sports teams an other settings -- Knut Holt, 12:42:10 07/08/18 Sun

Interesting polls about events in childhood, teenhood and adulthood

THE NEWWST TESTAMONIALS RECEIVED

Boy 16yo, NA, extensive intimate assessments and adjustments by sport school

I am male. It happened in North America, 2015 or later, 16 years old. It was announced a few days before it took place, also a message was sent to parents.

We went in a bus in group from our school, at a special establishment used for these type of exams. A selected percentage of the children in my school of the age group had the exam, including all children with some kind of health problem, and all children that have shown more than just standard interest for sexual matters.

I attended a private boarding school specialized in sports, especially swimming which I performed. When going for the examination we were told to only wear a pair of older swimming briefs (speedos). We were taken by bus to the special health center where the examinations were done.

PREPARATIONS AND ANTESTHESIA - OVERVIEW

I was not allowed to eat some time before the exam. They washed my body before the exam. My stomach was cleaned out by a tube incerted into my anus that was connected to some pump and flush mashine.

I was totally naked through all the procedures. I had to strip totally naked before the exam. They placed me upon a simple examination table an also upon an advanced surgical table.

I was placed to lay on my back with my legs flexed up, spread and mounted upon two devices. I got IVs, tubes into blood vessels, in an arm. I got a device on a finger or a toe to measure pulse and oxygen in my blood and a blood pressure monitor wrapped around an arm or a leg.

I got electrodes on my cheast, on my stomach or hip region, on my legs and on my head.

I got a tube or wire in through my urethra. I got a tube or sond in through my anus. I got some numbing and lubricating cream injected into my urinary opening and my anus.

THE PREPAEARIONS AS EXPERIENCED

First they measured my height and weight, then I had to lay on a normal examination table where they placed electrodes to several places of my body. Then I had to run on a thread-mill until my heart rate reached a pre-determined level. After that I had to lay on a special examination table with my legs raised and held by two devices, making my legs spread really wide.

They bound me on the table with several straps, on arms and legs, over my chest and abdomen and even my head, keeping me totally immobile. Then they began with the rest of the examination.

EXAMINATION WITH EXTERNAL EQUIPMENT

They performed an EEC (electroencephalogram) - functional test of the brain with electrodes on the head. They performed an ECG, functional test of the heart function, with electrodes on my chest and other body areas. They performed an analysis of my breathing and oxygen uptake where I had to breath into a tube. I had to do some physical work, like cycling or running on a threadmill when the ECG and breathing analysis was performed.

They examined me with an ultrasound device or something similar at my upper body, stomach area, hip area, arms and legs and my genitals.

They took x-ray pictures of my chest, my stomach, my shoulder area, my hip area and my limbs.

They used electrodes to record functions inside my head, my chest, my belly, and my genitals.

INTERNAL INSPECTIONS AT THE UPPER BODY PARTS

They ispected the inside of my nose with a scope. They took specimens from my nose with a tube. They inspected the inside of my throut with a scope.

IMTERNAL INSPECTIONS IN THE LOWER BODY PARTS

They inspected the inside of my urethra and bladder with a scope. They took specimens from my urethra with a tube. They inspected my anus with a speculum. They took specimens from my anus with a tube. They inspected me through my anus with a rigid scope. They inspected me through my anus high up with a flexible scope. They inspected me through my anus with an ultrasound probe. The doctor explored my anus with a finger.

THE INTERNAL INSPECTIONS AS EXPERIENCED

They filled my bladder with some fluid through the tube several times. First time was before the ultrasound examination, then they repeated the filling I think 8 to 10 times, each time with a larger quantity. They also kept the fluid in my bladder for longer and longer time, really stretching it.

This was very uncomfortable, painful even.
They also took samples of my semen by using the electrodes to stimulate my genitals until I ejaculated. During this I had to look at pictures of various boys and girls on a computer screen. It was pictures of both classmates, some celebrities and for me totally unknown people.

Most of the other examinations were not painful, but a bit uncomfortable and felt quite weird.

ARRANGEMENTS AFTER THE EXAM

They held me inconscious for some hours. I had IVs into blood vessels. I had electrodes on my head. I had electrodes on my body. I had catheter into my bladder. I had a tube going in through my anus. I lay with my legs in stirrups some time after the exam.

The doctor decided that I had to be circumcised, and this was done while I still were placed on the examination table. Because of the circumcision I had to stay at the center until the next day.

Then I could go back to school with another group that had their examinations that day.

FOLLOW- UPS

I also had to keep the catheter for another month with instructions to only empty my bladder when it felt really full. I also had to revisit the health center once a week and having my bladder filled and stretched more and more. Also ultrasound examinations were done to the bladder. At all those visits I were totally naked the whole time. After that my bladder capacity must have been increased a lot, often I only need to empty it once or twice a day.

THE SCJOOL I ATTENDED

I attended private boarding school. A private boarding school specialized in sports.

COMMENTS
Basically this is a standarized extensive procedure used on children in all parts of the world in selected communities or schools. The purpose is a comprehensive health assessment, development check and surveillance of the young population and research. The procedure is coordinated nationally and internationally.

The typical ages for this procedure is around 7yo, 12yo and 16yo. It is highly possible that this boy had got done something very similar to him at teh two earlier ages.

The procedure is often extended with particularities wanted by the education institution. In this case it seems that the boy undervent extensive adjustments in his pelvic area and his development to prepare him for better achievments in sport. Such adjustments done for sport schools are typically achieved by internal stretching of various kind and by injection of hormonal drugs in body parts.

They also tested his sexual reaction, probably both for research and survaillance, and for purposes of the school.

Being held uncouscious after the main exam is a frequent particularity reported. Perhaps more adjustments were done then, but the boy was possibly also used as training object for medical students.

It is also higly probable that the sport trainer was present when he was unconscious to learn all kind of particularities of the body parts of the boy, and probably also the trainer did an examination of all his body parts for his purpose.

The boy probably did not need to be circumcised, but it was done to take tissue for research and to sell in the organ and tissue market.

The school was probably also paid money for the research and student training parts of the ordeal.

Boy 18yo external and internal tests before army recruitment

I am male. It happened in Eastern Europe. 1990-1999, 18 years old. Sent for physical fitness test before mandatory army recruitment. I went there alone by myselfm to a health center, at a sport health department of hospital, in a doctors office. All children with some kind of health problem got this extended test.

PREPARATION AND ARRANGEMENTS

Was asked to strip naked. Had some basic examination inclusing heart listening, stomach palpating, blood samples. Then performing physical tests during activities naked. I was totally naked through all the procedures.

They placed me upon a simple examination table. I got a device on a finger or a toe to measure pulse and oxygen in my blood. I got a blood pressure monitor wrapped around an arm or a leg. I got electrodes on my cheast, on my stomach or hip region, on my legs and on my head. I did not get any anesthesia. Between particular tests I had lay on back still naked covered by blanket.

OVERVIEW OF THE EXAMINATIONS WITH EXTERNAL EQUIPMENT

They performed an ECG, functional test of the heart function with electrodes on my chest and other body areas. They performed an analysis of my breathing and oxygen uptake where I had to breath into a tube.
I had to do some physical work like cycling or running on a threadmill when the ECG and breathing analysis was performed. They did some other type of test with advanced machines.

They used electrodes at my chest, belly and limbs to record body functions.

OVERVIEW OF INTERNAL INSPECTIONS

They ispected the inside of my nose with a scope. They inspected the inside of my throut with a scope. They inspected the inside of my urethra and bladder with a scope. They inspected my anus with a speculum.

HOW THE EXAM PROCEEDED

Tests of breathing several blood samples during day looking to mouth anus ears . Before and after each activity (cycling running) they got small sample of blood, give me ECG, they looked to my neck anus . When Ive needed to pee I had to get piss into medical glass and they analyzed it

HOW THE ORDEAL ENDED

They gave me mechanical ventilation through the breathing tube. I had electrodes on my body. I lay naked under a blanket after the exam. Before finished I was asked for semen sample. They asked me if I wa t to masturbate or they would use a catheter methods. I was supervised during masturbation by doctor as well as by nurse.

I had to lie some whiles after exam. Then Im got home by public transfer. I attended public boarding school. I was on high school.

COMMENT

This seemed to be an extensive exam to see if the boy was fit for military service. But it also loooks like an exam done for research purposes. I therefore guess that not only kids with health problems went+ through the test, but also a random nummber of other teens.

The artificial ventilation at the end seems to have been a part of a test. Probably he got short-working anesthesia and medication to paralyzs muscles during that test, but does not remember it.

Boy, 8yo, USA, Circumcission and procedure insite the urinary system

I am male, it happened at schoolage 8yo, in North America, in USA, in the years 2000-2009 They performed an exam or procedure but was not given information about what they did. I was 8 and I was circomsized . My foreskin was too tight and I had problems peeing. I think my parents wanted to restrict my sexual feeling too I am male. My parents brought me to a hospital where it was done.

PREPARATIONS AND ARRANGEMENTS

My parents didn't tell me anything other then I was going to have surgery

They gave me gas through a mask. They put a mask on me. The procedure happened in a hospital. I had to get a catheter put in. They had trouble doing it in the pre opp room because I was moving around to much. They took me to an operating room and strapped me down on it so I couldn't move. Then they spread my legs apart and put the catheter in me. I was crying because it hurt and I was alone.

SYMPTOMS AFTER THE PROCEDURE

I had pain irritation or other problems in my urethra or bladder. My parents or others giving hints or remarks about unexpected symptoms or signs.

ARRANGEMENTS AFTER THE PROCEDURE

I had a mask I had catheter, they kept it in me for a couple of days I had heart monitor

COMMENTS

Based on the history of having problems with urination, the symptoms after, and of the long use of catheter, they surely also inspected the urethra and bladder of the boy endoscopically, and probably made some adjustments in the urinary system too, most probably in the prostate area or bladder outlet.

They probably took out the catheter before or after the circumcission to inspect the urinary system and then inserted the catheter anew.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boy, Western Europe, Tonsillectomy with possible urinary endoscopy

It happened as preteen 10-12, in western Europe, in 2010 or later. I had tonsillectomy. It happened in a hospital that my dad worked at I was 12 then

PREPARATIONS AND ARRANGEMENTS

They gave me gas through a mask. They put a mask on me. I wasn't given any explanation. I asked to see what it was like to be a patient on an operating table. I lay down I was strapped down and had a mask put on me and told to just relax and take deep breaths
.

SYMPTOMS AFTER THE PROCEDURE

I had pain, irritition or other problems in my mouth. I had pain, irritation or other problems in my urethra or bladder. My underwear beng messed up or other signs that I had been stripped naked at my lower body. My undewer got lost.

ARRANGEMENTS AFTER THE PROCEDURE

I had IV, a mak and heart monitor,

COMMENTS

When he was asleep, he was surely paralyzed by medications, got a breathing tube and artificial ventilation. This is common procedure during tonsillectomy.

The fact that his underwear was missing and the symptoms in his urethra and bladder is a sure indiction that something was done at that area.

The simplest explanation is that they fixed electrodes at his buttock area and inserted a catheter that they took out again before he woke up.

But boys and girls in his age are often examined endoscopically in the urethra, bladder and anus, as well as the vagina in girls during tosillectomy. One reason for this is to get two planned procedures done at the same time, and keep the most intimate one secret for the kid. It is also used for training of doctors and for reseaarch and surveillance of the kids in society.

I strongly suspect this is the case here, at least I think they performed a cystoscopy. If the boy had urinary tract infection some time before, or other urinary problems, this conclusion is certain.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Boy, 9yo, North America genital exam and urinary tract endoscopy

I had cystoscopy - I am male. The exam took place in North America, at a hospital when I was 9 years old. Years 1980-1989.

PREPARATIONS

Got now explanation. The exam was a total surprize. My parents drove me. Given enema during preparations. The enema felt weird. Lay on back with legs in stirrups.

HOW THE EXAM WAS EXPERIENCED

They put a rigid stick-like cystoscope in through the urethra. They pumped upp the bladder with air or gas when looking inside. They pumped up and irrigated bladder with water when looking inside.

They took out the scope and inserted a new scope to take further specimens. The scope or a new intrument was inserted even further up towards the kindeys. I am not sure, but had pain on the sides of my back as if they inserted the scope even further up towards the kindeys.

They made an ultrasound exam of the scrotum and testicles. No aditional exams.

It felt awesome. I could feel the tube slide into my body. The tube was ment for adults and a bit wider than it should have been.

ARRANMGEMENTS AFTER THE EXAM

Had catheter in the bladder some time after the exam. Got medicines into urethra with a syringe after the exam. Had to have catheter in the bladder during night.

REASON AND JUDGEMENTS

The reason was problems with urination. It was awesome.

COMMENTS

The boy had a thorrough examination of his genitals, urethra, bladder and the area up to his kidneys. This is pretty common for kids with urinary problems and kids that hav had urinary tract infections.

It seems that the exam was done only with local numbing, some relaxing stuff and a gentle approach. This type of exam can actually be made comfirtably this way, even on children. When this is possible, one avoids risk inherited in general anesthesia and discomfort after anesthesia.

Usually general anesthesia is used during such exams, but this is more to hinder the kids and parents to know fully what is done, and hinder stories being made after the exam. This is for the benefit of the staff and not the kid.

Boy, 8yo, extensive internal inspections in general anesthesia at school

It happened in North America, 1980-1989, 8 years old. They just told me to follow them in a bus in group from our schoolm to a room in the school that was preliminary prepared for the event.

It happened all children in my school of the age group. All the kids in my group were boy's.

PREPARATIONS AND ARRANNGEMENTS

I had to strip totally naked before the exam and I was totally naked through alll the procedures.

They placed me upon a simple examination table. Rgey placed me on back with with steight legs, on back with my legs flexed up, spread and mounted upon two devices.

I got a tube or wire in through my urethra. I got a breathing tube that provided anesthesia. The anesthesia only took away pain.","They paralyzed my whole body and I got artificial breathing. The anesthesia made me relaxed, I was mostly awake during the procedure, despite anesthesia given.

They did not numb our throats before inserting the breathing tubes, so we gagged a lot.
When the gas was turned on we stayed awake but were too week to move much.

EXAMINATIONS DONE BY EXTERNAL EQUIPMENT

They performed an analysis of my breathing and oxygen uptake where I had to breath into a tube. They examined my genitals with an ultrasound device.

INTERNAL EXAMIMATIONS

They inspected the inside of my nose with a scope. They took specimens from my nose with a tube. They inspected the inside of my throut with a scope. They took specimens from my throut with a tube.

They inspected the inside of my urethra and bladder with a scope. They took specimens from my urethra with a tube. They took specimens from my bladder with a tube, but I might not remember everything done in ny urinary system.

They used a hard tube to look inside my penis, it hurt alot.

ARRANGEMENTS AFTER THE EXAM

I had catheter into my bladder. I just lay some time in a bed to recover.

They put us to sleep after the procedure by blocking the air tubes.
I remember my lungs burning for minutes and minutes while they said things like . It's ok, your just getting a little sleepy. It's time to take a nap, thats it, there you go. good boy. Than getting dizzy.
Then a moment later I woke up in the school bus headed home, had a headache too.

THE SCHOOL I ATTENDED

I went to some school for kids with special needs. I don't remember much about it."

COMMENTS

Based on the story, it looks like the ordeal happened in an annex owned by the school a little distance form the classroom building. It looks that the bus used was more to keep order of the kids, than to transport them.

The boy got general anesthesia with artificial breathing and numbing of the whole body. But thye anesthesia dis not work perfectly, so much of the initial tasks was remembered. It seems like the staff discovered that the boy was awake, an that they gave hime more heavy anesthesia before proceeding.

Higly probably they inspected his anus and colon diring the last thimne when he was fully to sleep
.

If this rectal procedure was also performed, this seems to be is a complete standarized exam done on children all over the world, in selected communities and institutions at specific ages. Children that is taken in by child protective agencies or go to schools for children with special needs, seem always to be subjected to this exam in all parts of the world.

The exams and the results from them seen to be coordinated by an international body, probably the World Health Organizations, which explains that there are few differences between the easterm communist world and the capitalist world. These exams are still going on more than ever in a modernized more advanced fashion. For example one used to do a full colonoscopy nowadays, and endoscopy through the mouth down into the stomach also.

Not seldome the staff installs itself and equipment preliminary in a section of the school m fo the procedure, and them move on to another school.

The exam is nostly not told about to the public, even in communities where all children go through it, and it is largely hided from the children themselfves and the parents by use of anestkesia. But not all communities are equally eager to hide it. The Eastern World is actually less secretive than the wester one. Also the anesthesia do not always manage to put the children totally to sleep, so most of it is revealed.

The purpose of the exam is to get a picture of the health status of the child, but it is also used for surveillance of the young population, for scientific research and to steal tissue from the kids to be used for other things than the good of the children themselves. In addition prevetive measures may be inserted like in this case.

Children taken care of by child protective agencies, or attend special scjools always seem to be altered in their pelvic regions during this exam. Highly probable the bladder and the urethra of this boy was adjusted some ways.

It sounds odd, but it looks like they try to standarisize bodily functions, body development and behavior by these alternations and by depot preparations injected so that it conforms to the rutines in the institution. Also this is an aspect reported from all parts of the world.

Boys are typically taken to this procedure at the age of 7-9, girls often a little earlier, then again taken kust before puberty, and a third time furing eraly puberty.

Sports Bio -- Chris DiIonno, 21:47:26 09/08/03 Mon

My name is Chris DiIonno and I am a junior communication/philosophy major. I feel like my life is related to those ESPN "without sport" commercials, like 'without sports, weekends would be weekdays." I played baseball and soccer growing up and always found that it was easier to get through school if I had something to look forward to afterard. My real passion has always been football however and I would love to get into a career as a PR director for a team someday. Right now I work for Sportstalk 980 a local sports radio station, so I'm trying to get my foot in the door somewhere. I' enjoy playing anything and everything (although I'm not very talented) and enjoy watching some of the less popular sports such as boxing, horse racing and pool. I am a diehard 49ers fan and a Maryland basketball person - in fact the only times you'll see me truly angry is when one of the two is doing poorly.

Hey, my name is Kunal Pasricha and I live in Rockville, MD. I am a senior getting a double degree in Government and Politics and Philosphy. The sports I love playing include tennis and raquet ball. I have always been a die-hard sports fan and very closely follow the Redskins and Terrapins primarily, with strong interest in all the local teams and some sports that are more popular internationally such as Soccer and Formula 1. I was at the Skins game last Thursday to see us win, and even though Maryland is off to a rocky start, I expect both teams to finish with about 9 wins each.

Sporting Biography -- John-Henry Zarzycki, 23:16:37 09/07/03 Sun

How's it going everyone? I'm a sophomore knes major and have had a strong passion for sports growing up. I tried to play every sport there was and there is nothing I like more then the competition. I'm an athlete at Maryland and I'm on the wrestling team. I have gained a lot of sucess through the sport during my high school career and hope to further that here as a Terp. Wrestling has helped me get a scholarship and pay the increasing tuition that has annoyed us all. I hope to learn more about why we play sports and why people act the way they do as spectators and competitors. It's just an interest that I've always had growing up, and it's great I can take a class and furthur my knowledge of the sporting worls

Hey. My name is Patrick Cannon I'm a Junior and a Communications major. I have been fascinated with sports my entire life(my dad can recall me sitting down quietly at age 3 watching golf and 9 inning baseball games). I'm from Olney, Maryland and went to Sherwood High School where I played football. Although my playing days are done, I still actively participate in intermural and recreational sports and exercise regularly. I am a huge fan of all the local teams(REDSKINS, Wizards, Capitals, O's). I was interested in this class initially because I aspire to go to law school after graduating and pursue a career in sports agency and marketing. To this point the content of the course seems to be all I expected.

Sports Bio -- Deena Nasr, 21:46:14 09/07/03 Sun

Hi guys, my names Deena I am from Rockville, MD. I am a 3rd year student knes major at UMD and I am also doing pre-med because I want to go into sports medicine. I have been very active in sports since I was young. Although ballet is not a sport I started the in 2nd grade along with swimming. When I was in 6th grade a friend asked if I wanted to play soccer and I did for 6 years. I was active in gymnastics in elementary school but it faded until 1996 when the gymnastics team won gold at the olympics and I decided to return to gymnastics. I re-started in 8th grade and have continued on till now. I competed in my high school and an outside club team. I competed in one national competition. I did gymkana for 2 years here at UMD but decided it was not for me and started a gymnastics club last spring. In addition to gymnastics I did swimming and diving in high school but mainly focused on diving. I enjoy being an active spectator at many sporting events especially UMD gymnastics meets. Bye!

Sports Biography -- Rex Lawrence, 21:45:43 09/07/03 Sun

Hey, My name is Rex Lawrence and I am junior with a major in Kinesiology. I have been planning on working in the Sports field ever since I can remember. My main goal is to work in the sports marketing field, somewhere in the NFL preferably. I was an assistant coach in high school for both the basketball and football teams, so I may consider looking at coaching as a possible major. Coming to UMD was a big step, because this school has one of the best KNES departments in the Country. No matter what I end up doing in my life, I know it will have something to do with sports.

P.S. GO RAIDERS...even though they just lost :( (even the best teams never go undefeated)

Sports Bio -- Lisa Adamson, 21:07:54 09/07/03 Sun

Hi, my name is Lisa Adamson, I am a sophomore, and I'm from Glenn Dale, MD. I have not declared a major yet, but I intend to declare Kinesiology in the near future. I plan to study Physical Therapy after I graduate from UMD. I began my sporting career in kindergarten when I started taking ballet and gymnastics lessons. I continued gymnastics through eighth grade and I took many different dance classes including tap, jazz, and lyrical. My sophomore year in high school, I was a member of the Pom Squad. I loved participating in these activities because they fulfilled all of the Es for me (except economic outcomes). I also took tennis and golf lessons for a short time. I enjoy being a passive spectator of dance and gymnastics competitions. I wish I could be an active participant in gymnastics again, but I twisted my knee three years ago and have chronic knee pains. My family members have never really been active spectators in any type of sporting event, except for my dad who loves golf. Through this class I hope to gain a better understanding of the way sports impact our society as individuals and as a whole.

Hi, Im Brianne Bre Meyers! Im a senior KNES major from Deep Creek Lake, MD. I actually very recently accepted a research and fitness instructor position at Crunch Fitness Corporation in Los Angeles, CA. After graduation, on June 9th, I plan to move to Westwood, CA. to begin working under Robert Glick (a huge presenter in the fitness industry) at Crunch Fitness on Sunset Blvd. The following spring I will also begin masters work at UCLA, that fortunately enough, Crunch Fitness has generously offered to pay for J I began my sporting career at the age of two when I first entered my local dance studio, Ive been dancing competitively ever since! Dancing also presented an opportunity for me to start competing in Sportaerobics, which although is unpopular in the US, is a national sport in many other countries. In 1999, I was Gold Medallist for the US and Bronze Medallist for the world, competing in this sport has allowed me to travel to many foreign lands as a member of Team USA. Throughout college I have taught aerobics for the Univ. of Maryland, Ballys, and WorldGate Spa. I have also had the pleasure of being a featured presenter at the past three East Coast Collegiate Fitness Conferences. I now hold an internship as the Assistant Director of Group Fitness at our Campus Rec. Center. Although I have only focused in dance and aerobics, my entire family is very active in the sporting community. My younger brother is a starting pitcher for West Virginia University, and his collegiate sporting career has kept my entire family very involved in the sporting community. From this class I hope to gain a better understanding as to why society views different sports as they do. For instance, why is Sportaerobics unknown within the US, but a national sport in Brazil?

My Sporting Biography -- Celia Jones, 20:47:19 09/07/03 Sun

Hi everyone. My name is Celia Jones, I am a senior Kinesiology major. I was born and lived in Jamaica until I was seven years old, and I didn't really have a lot of exposure to sports there. My dad liked to watch cricket on television, but it was never really a big thing in my family to be involved in sports. I never really had an interest in playing sports when I was younger, because I never saw any sports that seemed fun enough to play. In high school, the only sport that interested me was Cheerleading, and I became a cheerleader in the 10th grade, and loved it. I was on varsity for the rest of my high school years. In my 11th grade year, I tried softball, but that was my only year playing....it just didn't really keep my interest. I loved to cheer, which to a lot of people wasn't even considered a sport, but I had to stop after high school. When I got to college, I went to a few football games to check out the cheerleaders, but I was turned off from college cheering because it all of a sudden didn't seem like it was for fun anymore. In college, sports seem to be more like "Work" than "Fun". In most sports, it seems like it is important to do well so that the sport can continue to be funded or so that the college can uphold a certain record about it's athletics department. It seems like athletes are working to eventually be able to make a living at the sport, (which there is nothing wrong with), it's just that the only sporting experience I have ever had was to have fun when playing, and college sports just doesn't seem to have that for me. So now, I am not involved in any sports, though I enjoy WATCHING football games, and cheerleading competitions on ESPN.

My name is Michael Pie (pronounced pee-ay, rhyming with 'relay') and I am from Baltimore. I have always been invloved in sports just my position has changed over the years. As a small child I played in both little league baseball and youth bowling. I outgrew interest in both as a regular hobby but later found an interest in basketball. I never played basketball formally, just in pick-up games everyday after school for my four years in high school. I am now a freakishly obsessive fan of professional basketball. I also follow pro football and college basketball, and occasionally pro baseball and college football. I love to manipulate and compare sports statistics and am majoring in sports management and getting a certificate in statistics in the hopes of being able to do so professionally. I plan to be an avid spors spectator for the rest of my life.

biography -- Catherine Denny, 20:36:44 09/07/03 Sun

Hey! My name's Cat and I grew up in the middle of nowhere, southern Maryland, where there really wasn't anything to do BUT do sports. My father was always completely into sports, so my sister and brother and I always were involved with something - and some of the most random sports too, not just the typical ones. I did horseback riding and gymnastics (weird combination, right?) for 5 years but stopped when I got into high school because I played field hockey and lacrosse. I wish I had the time and talent to play for Maryland's varsity teams, but I don't so I play club lax and give props to those girls who do play D1. I've always been SUPERCOMPETITIVE about anything that can be made into a competition, so sometimes I could cover all of the "E's" in one event (depending if I was betting on the sport) - but I always try to have fun with what I'm doing (I just like to be winning when I do!) :) I decided to go into Physical therapy because I was really interested when I got injured once, and I'm a sophomore here at UM.

Sport Bio -- William R. Hollister (Billye), 20:35:21 09/07/03 Sun

Hey, my name is Billye Hollister and I am a Kinesiology major here at MD and I will be a junior after this semester. I am originally from Waldorf, Maryland and I am a transfer from Frostburg State University which I attended for 2 years. It seems as though sport has been involved in my life for as long as I can remember. I have played baseball and basketball since I was 6 and I stopped playing oragnized basketball after high school. I have remained playing baseball which is one of the reasons I transferred to the University of Maryland. I was captain of my baseball team throughout high school and had 2 very successful years at Frostburg earning all-conference honors as a pitcher my sophomore year. My parents have had a huge influence on my entire sports experience supporting me every step of the way. As many in the class have shown, sports shape our personality showing all facets in one shape or form if one is to participate. I look forward to being here at Maryland, and hopefully I can keep having success in baseball as well.

Sports in my life -- Florent Groberg, 20:29:41 09/07/03 Sun

My name is Florent Groberg and I am a criminal justice major. I was borned and raised in Paris, France playing and living football (soccer). My mother wanted me to be involved with martial arts, so I practiced Judo for 14yrs and found to be pretty successful at it. Both of my parents were great runners. My mother was mediteranian champion in the mile (4:36), so I suppose that is why she instructed me in joining the track and field team at my hs my junior year. Today, unlike 5 years ago I thank her for it, as I am a member of the cross country/track and field teams here at UMD. My life has revolved around sports, mostly soccer. Living in France all my childhood i was addicted to soccer, i ate, drank, slept, and even cried football (soccer). Being involved with sports all my life, has really helped me find my true identity. I hope to be around my sport has an athlete, coach, mentor, and any other way possible for the rest of my life.

Sport Bio -- Christopher C., 20:23:32 09/07/03 Sun

My name is Christopher Corvelli and I'm a communications major. I want to be a sports broadcaster/commentator. Growning up I always played basketball and football with my friends. I played on a variety of different basketball teams all through school. Sports has introduced me to life long friends that I would have never known if it weren't for sports. It brings people together that may have never had contact with each other outside of sports. It adds excitement to life and it's a great outlet for people who are competative like myself, as a fan or as a participant.

My name is Aaron Gough and I am a senior Computer Science major. Growing up, sport played a huge role in my life. My childhood was tremendously influenced by sport in many different ways. My parents had very different experiences with sport, my mother was a gymnast and was involved with gymkana during her college years at UMD while my father had never been in organized sport, but had enjoyed activities such as hiking and fishing. They wanted me to have a well rounded experience with sport. I grew up playing soccer, lacrosse, and tennis. I also took up skateboarding and snowboarding as a teenager. During high school I played both soccer and tennis. Since coming to UMD, I have become very interested in both college basketball and football. I also enjoy watching tennis, soccer, and slamball =)

Sports Bio -- Brandon Muhlgeier, 20:09:09 09/07/03 Sun

Hi my name is Brandon Muhlgeier and I am a Sophomore Kinesiology major from New Jersey. Growing up for me was normally every Saturday or Sunday during the school year a recreational league sports day. In the fall it was soccer, I swam during the winter and played soccer and baseball in the spring. I eventually gave up on the baseball just because I was getting better at soccer. It was pretty much that way till I started to play high school volleyball and run track. Track only lasted 2 seasons because of an infamous snowball fight during practice, which led to a few guys and myself getting dropped from the program. I was better off though because it gave me more time to ski during the winter, which is always a good thing.
Currently I am Emergency Medical Technician and want to go on to get my paramedic license after I graduate. Doing the job Ive seen a lot of different sports related injuries. Everything from skateboard falls, twisted ankles from basketball, runners and bikers who have been hit by cars, and football injuries just to name a few incidents. Ive also cut a few people out of cars but thats a different story. Driving around in an ambulance is a lot of fun, and you get to have a real impact on peoples lives. Its definitely a thrill job why I love doing it.

sporting biography -- shari gorga, 20:02:39 09/07/03 Sun

Hey there! My name is Shari Gorga and I am from the Dirty Jerz, and I am sophomore who has not decided on my major yet. I want to major in sports marketing or business marketing, so I am debating whether or not to enroll in the business school here or to participate in the Individual Studies Program, because Sports Marketing is not a recognized major at UMD. I have been involved with sports since I was very young, when Saturday morning soccer games was the weekend activity. In high school I ran cross-country, track-and-field, and played basketball. I supported all the other sports through out the year and loved to watch my classmates on the fields and courts. Now, I am a member of the cross-country and track-and-field teams here at UMD, and gained more of an appreciation for college athletics. I feel that sports have a positive impact on all individuals, whether youre watching them or participating in them. You learn self-discipline, commitment, teamwork, along with many other important life long lessons. No matter how one incorporates sports into their lives, everyone learns from them, appreciates them, and they shape many of our actions. I grew up with sports as a child, and still am involved in them everyday which is exciting and a lot of fun to me, and I will continue to be involved with sports for the rest of my life, well, until I am old and crippled.

Sport biography -- Eric Marenburg, 20:01:27 09/07/03 Sun

My name is Eric Marenburg and I am a junior in the business school. I have nearly always been actively and passively involved in sports. It has shaped my life and the person I am. I grew up in a suburb of Boston where it was expected of most kids to be athletes. I began playing soccer at age 5, baseball at age 7 (well T-ball at first), and basketball at age 8. In middle school I started running and that is what I focused on in high school. I have run varsity cross country and track the previous two years here. Sports creates a competitiveness deep within you that is unique. Whether it is a track meet, something small like a game of darts, or comparing scores on tests with friends, I hate to lose. This attitude makes even the smallest competitive task exciting. Each day just doesn't feel complete without some involvement with sports.

My Sporting Biography -- Nathaniel Zola, 19:50:30 09/07/03 Sun

My name is Nathaniel (Natty) Zola. Sport has dominated my life as it seems to have for everyone in this class. I grew up in Boulder, Colorado and have followed Colorado teams all my life. I love the Denver Broncos, Avs, Rockies, Buffs, but I dont care about the Nuggets (no one in Colorado does). Growing up in Boulder exposed me to a very healthy fit lifestyle. It is a haven for endurance athletes such as runners, cyclists, tiathletes as well as recreational hiking, skiing, rock climbing, kayaking, etc. The athletic culture of Boulder has shaped my whole life and formed many of my values. As for my sport participation, I run xc and track for the University of Maryland, but I only started running as a junior in high school. Before I started running, I skiied competativly and snowboarded as well as played soccer, football, baseball and basketball. Now I prefer endurance sports like running and cycling. I believe they teach many lessons that are invaluable and unable to be taught in any class room. The 30 hours a week I spend at practice and with the team teach me more than any class ever could. So I am an active and passive participant in sports. All aspects of the 6 E's apply except for Economic. Our mens xc and track teams have no funding so we all run for free and for the love of it, but the other 5 E's are benefits enough.

Sports Bio -- Leslie Vincent, 19:50:29 09/07/03 Sun

When it comes to sports I have always been a leisure participant who floats between active and passive spectating. I run on a regular basis and try to lift weights whenever possible. In addition, I enjoy watching football and soccer, but my favorite sport to watch is boxing, which by the way is both creative and playful (ever heard of rope a dope?). I think I get excitment, education, entertainment and excercise through sports, however excercise and excitment are my intended outcomes.

Sports biography -- Malinda Murphy, 19:41:45 09/07/03 Sun

Growing up I always played sports. I took part in a number of competitive basketball and softball leagues. I played AAU basketball for 5 years and played tournament softball for 6 years. When I reached high school, I played varsity basketball and softball. When looking into colleges I had to make the decision of whether or not to play softball in college; over the years I developed a passion for athletic training. I chose to dedicate my time in college to athletic training. Currently, I am the student athletic trainer for the women's soccer team and am looking forward to this coming season. One of my favorite things to do in my free time is to watch college basketball and football. I have a number of friends playing collegiate sports and I try to catch their games whenever I can. I just transferred from Hosftra University and am now a sophomore knes major and intend to pursue a career in medicine.

sports bio -- Kimmie Dobbs, 19:34:50 09/07/03 Sun

Hi, I'm Kimmie Dobbs. I am a transfer student from New York University, where I spent two years putting together a concentration in mind-body health. I am now a kinesiology major here, and working as a physical therapy aide. I must say that my relationship with sports has been an alternative one. I have worked professionally as both a dancer/performer and a dance teacher/choreographer. I am also a pilates instructor. I have participated leisurely with martial arts (recently) and gymnastics (as a kid). I have also enjoyed being a passive spectator of ice skating and gymnastics events. I think the closest I have gotten to participating in anything traditional was to football, when I peformed at a Redskins' halftime show (haha...joke). Anywho, most of the passion, and teamwork, training, and dedication that is found in traditional sports is also found in dance, and in this way I can relate... this is, briefly, how the 6 E's are related to dance in my life: excitement- definitely, especially performances, competitions, etc; education- dance has taught me about discipline and work ethic; entertainment- unfortunately, dance as entertainment is mixed in with it's economic value... being paid to peform 8 shows per week doesn't make it any easier; exercise- for sure! Anywho, nice to meet you all, and thanks for listening to my speil.

Sporting Biography -- Justin Smith, 19:18:02 09/07/03 Sun

Hey, my name is Justin Smith. I am basically a typical guy when it comes to watching most sports-I love it! I also swim here at Maryland. I was raised playing two sports, swimming and hockey. I follow many sports, but those I am obsessed with. I grew up playing those sports mostly in Omaha, Nebraska, which naturally raises you to be a Cornhusker fan-and I continue to be a die-hard fan of the Huskers. I watch hockey religiously, my favorite team is the Colorado Avalanche, and of course my favorite player, which just happens to be the best player in the NHL is Peter Forsberg. I still skate often, but at 14 I was forced to choose a sport and swimming was something that really caught my attention. I love following the swimming world and hope to coach one day. I am a junior kinesiology major here at Maryland and hope to finish school in the next seven years.

Hay, my name is Brooke Richards and I am a sophmore hear at the University of Maryland. When it comes down to it, I LOVE SPORTS. I am a member of the womens lacrosse team and enjoy every bit of it. When I was younger I played softball, basketball, tennis and I was on the swiming and diving team for my community. I can't go a day without sports. I have to be doing something. When it comes to watching sports, I have a hard time choosing between tennis and college basketball as being my favorite. Personally, I think that tennis players are among the most fit people in the world. I know that it is very hard to determine that, and you probably couldn't, but just watching them inspires me. So, anyways back to what I was saying before. In my senior year of high school, my lacrosse team one states for the first time in history and that was probably the best memory of my life when it comes to sports. It was the best feeling ever. I guess the reason why I love to play a variety of sports is because of the feeling I get when I play them. Adrenaline just pumps through my blood. Just thinking about it makes me excited. I watched my first collegiate soccer game, in person, just a few days ago. It was so exciting and Maryland won!!!! All in all, I am really looking forward to this class and I hope to get an even better idea of what sports really are and how they affect the lives of so many people today.

Sporting Biography -- Joseph F. Thomas, 19:32:45 09/07/03 Sun

Hi, my name is Joe Thomas and I had just switched into Kinesiology during the winter. Sports has been apart of my everyday life ever since I began walking. I love to watch any type of sporting event that keeps things competitive. My favorite sport is basketball, which I played all the way up to high school. I had a few offers to play Division II or III but I decided to come here to study engineering and give my best shot at making the team here. Tryouts are now coming up in October and I will be giving my hardest shot and if things do not work out, I will look at other alternatives. It is really hard to believe how important sport really is to many of our cultural habits. We have even identified the perfect body types for certain sports, whether it be volleyball or football. Our jobs, family lives, and even a lot of peoples eating habits are modified because of their relation to sports. Well, I know I can go on forever about how sport really is important and involved in our everyday lives but if you have something to add please do!

Sport Biography -- Brooke J., 19:07:44 09/07/03 Sun

My name is Brooke Johnson, and I am a freshman, majoring in Kinesiology. After graduating I hope to go back home to Australia and obtain my bachelor of education, so that I can educate high school students in the area of sport and physical activity.
In high school I participated as a leisure participant in water polo, field hockey, basketball and also in swimming. I am now a member of the Maryland Varsity field hockey team, and participate in sport at a more professional level. As an athlete here at Maryland I have found a noticeable change in the level of training and exercise compared to that of when I participated as a leisurely competitor.
Through my experience in sport and the opportunity to come to America and experience collegiate sport, I have been able to learn and be educated on the American culture and bear witness to the enormous influence economics plays on American society and its comparison to that of Australia.
Finally I have felt that sport allows me to express myself, which is defined by the way that I play the game. The individuality of each participant in sport creates diversity and adds to the excitement of the game, making for greater interest in sport.

Hello, my name is Ryan James Mack and I am a Junior majoring in Sports Marketing throught the individual studies program. Sports has played a huge role in my life since around the age of five. I love playing and watching numerous sports, however my favorites are football and baseball. Although being from Stamford, Connecticut I have actively followed New York sports teams. I am a diehard New York Giants and Yankees fan, and will readily admit that in big game losses I want to cry and sometimes actually shed a tear. As a participant I am very competitve and enjoy playing opponents that are also competitive and somewhat cocky. It makes the competitive nature of the game that much more appealing. I spent my entire life playing baseball, basketball, and had several stints on the football field. Ryan M.

Sports Bio -- Kate Sanders, 18:18:43 09/07/03 Sun

Hi! I'm Katie and a second year knes major from Los Angeles. My childhood was spent dancing and participating in gymnastics. I also cheered a few years for pop-warner football and eventually became captain of my high school cheerleading/pom squad. My passion for cheerleading is partly due to my appreciation for organized sports such as baseball and football. Cheering for these teams was the perfect excuse to stay updated on the games and stats. I am a die-hard LA Dodger fan and find the game both entertaining and an opportunity for expression. Baseball games offer the American cultural experience in a 3 hour period. Food, fans, and extensive stats that mean nothing in the big picture of life could not make me happier.

Sporting Biography -- Amanda Shank, 18:08:30 09/07/03 Sun

Hi, my name is Manda and I am a sophomore journalism major, with kinesiology as my concentration. I am interested in sports marketing/sports public relations/sports journalism as a career. Throughout childhood I was on softball, basketball, soccer, swimming, and lacrosse teams. In high school I played field hockey and basketball until I had some knee injuries that forced me to stop playing on more than a recreational basis. I am now just a leisure participator in sports for exercise and entertainment: playing basketball at the gym and football with my guy friends. I've always been an active spectator. I grew up in London and was an avid fan of English Premier League soccer, particularly the Blackburn Rovers. I support the Redskins (my father likes to say my first word was "Darrell") and have been guilty on more than a few occassions of yelling at the TV. I also follow the Naval Academy's athletic teams (my brother goes there and I work there during the summer) and of course Terps athletics (especially football, men's basketball, and men's lacrosse). Watching sports with my friends gives me a lot of entertainment and excitement. Currently I volunteer in the Men's Lacrosse office, and I hope to work in the sports industry when I graduate.

My name is Mike Miller and Im a junior here at Maryland who recently switched from Biology to Kinesiology. After college I hope to find a job in the fitness industry such as a strength coach or health club owner. I have been an active participant in athletics since the age of seven and have played just about every popular American sport out there in some various organized form including soccer, baseball, football, basketball, swimming and wrestling. In high school I played football and baseball and also wrestled. I was also a walk-on inside linebacker for the Maryland football team until last month when I left the team. Now that I no longer compete I am strictly a leisure participant as I regularly weightlift, run and bike. I am a huge NFL, college football and college basketball fan and am regularly both an Active Spectator and Passive Spectator. Throughout my life, athletics have been a form of expression, excitement, entertainment and certainly exercise. I always identified myself as an athlete and expressed my self accordingly. I fed my need for adrenaline and excitement through athletics and also used them to entertain myself. Last but not least I have kept my body in shape by regularly participating in sports.

Sporting Biography -- DeAna Burr, 17:56:22 09/07/03 Sun

Hello. My name is DeAna Burr. I am a senior kinesiology major and a diehard Cowboys fan. (I just spent the last hour mourning their first loss.) I love football mostly for the excitement and the entertainment. I was educated on football by my grandfather by the time I was three years old. I love to play football, but I find it difficult to find a group willing to except that a "girl" can catch and throw a perfect spiral. I feel that it may be threatening to the male machismo. My fiancee hates football because of the economic factors and refuses to watch games with me. Our biggest debate is over stock car racing. I do not see it as a sport. I am hoping that through this course I will be able to back my view up and settle the debate once and for all.

Hey everyone. My name's Vickie and I'm a junior KNES major from Gaithersburg, MD. As far as participating in sports, I was a captain for cheerleading in high school. I know that many people don't really consider that a "sport", but it has many physical aspects to it that are comparable to "real" sports like football and basketball. As of now, I'm in a dancing group (UM Dancin Divas) that is more social and for fun. I'm more of an observer now and love watching football and basketball. I got hooked on the NBA from watching it with my mom since I was real young. Sports is such a big part of everyone's lives, whether we know it or not. From screaming at Florida St. beating us down...again, to just even sporting a MD jersey.

Sports Biography -- Adam Brown, 17:40:42 09/07/03 Sun

Hey, my name is Adam, i'm from South Jersey (just outside of Philly), and i'll eventually be a business major with a citation in Sports, Commerce, and Culture, or something close to that. Anyways, i have been involved in sports throughout my entire life. When i was younger, i played baseball and basketball in little league. I played lacrosse in high school and was the captain of the squad my senior year, and ran sprints (200 and 400) for varsity indoor track for 2 years. i still play pick up basketball, and informal baseball games, so i have been a leisure participant most of my life. i've also been going to phillies games regularly for about 10 or 11 years, through good times and bad (mostly bad, unfortunately). i've been an active spectator for a pretty long time, and sportscenter is a staple of my life, so i would also consider myself a passive spectator. sports have always been important to me in some way or another, and i'm hoping to go into a career involving sports.

Biography -- Carrie Durbin, 17:39:45 09/07/03 Sun

I've played a wide variety of sports my whole life. In highschool I focused on Tennis, because that's what I was best at, but I wish I'd played one of the team sports because they were more fun.
Until recently I wasn't interested in watching sports at all. I thought every game I saw on T.V. or went to in person was boring. I actually dozed off at a Wizards game once! However I can think of two time I was watching sports where I really enjoyed it. One was watching the Ravens win the Superbowl on T.V. and the other was the last MD/Duke game in Cole Field House. Both times I think I loved because of the atmosphere the fans created. Nothing got me more interested in watching the Ravens then how all of Baltimore was lit up with purple lights and everyone cheering about "Festivus Maximus" The Terps winning against Duke the last time we played them in Cole was the singular most exciting spectacle I have ever been a part of.

Sports Biography -- Meg Borbely, 17:36:21 09/07/03 Sun

Hi. My name is Meg and I am a Junior Kinesiology Major. I am hoping to get a doctorate in Physical Therapy and specialize in pediatrics/ athletic injuries. I started playing sports in 1st grade because my dad always would play with my guy cousins and I got jealous. Ever since then, I have been addicted to any sort of physical activity. I love being part of a team and I love competition. I dont really care what sport I am playing, I just love to play. In HS I was the captain of my varsity Volleyball team for 2 years and played on a state team when my seasons would end. I just took up golf last summer. I'm terrible at it. The only sports I play here are through the Intramural Sports Dept. since I am the intramural sports captain for my sorority. Its a good time...

Sporting Biography -- Marche' Strickland, 17:16:24 09/07/03 Sun

Hello everyone. My name is Marche' Strickland and I am a senior kinesiology major. When I look back over my life so far I can honestly say that I have participated on most of the levels of Mills' range of sporting involvement. I played basketball for the University of Maryland and afterwards I participated for a short time as a professional athlete in the WNBA. I consider both to be forms of professional participation and occupational participation (I used my "active body" as a form of employment in different ways). As a collegiate athlete and pro. I believe I sported for the excitement, entertainment and expression value (in the sporting E's). Now that that is all over however I play for recreation (the exercise and excitement of it) and am a leisure participant.Sometimes I might get out to a Wizards game or two as an acive spectator but now that they dont have Micheal Jordan I think that will stop (we will see). The other day however I was a passive spectator as I screemed at the t.v. during the Terps vs. Florida state game.
In looking at my participation levels, reasons for playing sport and my intended outcome, I believe that in anyones life they can change or one may have many at the same time.

Sporting Bio -- Dan Beren, 17:06:06 09/07/03 Sun

Hey everyone. My name's Dan Beren. Sports have been a part of my life for a long time. I have competed in baseball, basketball, lacrosse, soccer, sailing, tennis, and football. I played baseball and football at the varsity levels in high school (Gilman, Baltimore) and sailed in competitions such as the North American Off-Shore One-Designs (National Championships). I am an active spectator here for my beloved Terps and do go to the occasional Ravens game, but mostly don't go back to actively spectate. As far as the Terps go, I also post frequently on the Terrapin Times message board, www.terrapintimes.com, which is part of the Rivals network, if anyone knows about it. I post under the handle thebigtexas, in case anyone goes on there and is a member of the premium board. I passivly spectate just about every sport in one way or another. I follow to a degree almost every sport that would be considered popular here in the U.S. I also sport some clothing around, i.e. - hats, throwbacks, and some recent jerseys. I also weight lift and go bowling for leisure, but do get quite competetive with my friends. That's about all I can think of. I'm looking forward to meeting most of this sememster.

Sporting Biography -- Kevin Mulholland, 17:00:03 09/07/03 Sun

Hey everyone, my name is Kevin Mulholland, and I'm a sophomore journalism major from Newtown Square, PA. I have participated in sports a lot throughout my life, playing soccer and baseball since the age of five. I'm an avid sports fan as well, but I'm from outside Philadelphia so I've yet to experience winning a championship as a fan of the Phillies, Flyers, Sixers, and Eagles during my lifetime. From this standpoint I'm a professional when it comes to witnessing my teams lose. Sports have taught me how to hate and love, as I hate every team in the NFC East (esp. New York) that isn't the Eagles, and I love the Eagles.

Introduction -- Brynn Maycrink, 16:31:37 09/07/03 Sun

Hello everyone, I am excited about this class and to learn how this messageboard discusses certain sport related topics. To start off with, I am a senior kinesiology major and sports has always been a big part of my life. I was raised on being an leisure participate at Yankee games, watching my older brother play numerous sports, and also my parents always insisted on staying active and being healthy. I love watching any sport and also participating in any sport. I have played soccer for since I was 5 years old and have a lengthy soccer resume. I did go to college on a soccer scholarship and played for Long Island University, before I transferred here. I have also played internationally in Holland and Ireland. These experiences not only helped me in my soccer training, but showed how different countries have so much passion for certain sports, almost like they are sacred. It has also shaped me in a way of truly enjoying watching certain sporting events and knowing what is going on around me. Even though I am collegiately playing soccer anymore, I still train and workout for health reasons, play club soccer and intramurals, and after I graduate, get into speed climbing. I love being involved in any sport and seeing the world as an active participate whether playing or watching.

Sports Biography -- Charles Holley, 15:24:46 09/07/03 Sun

Hey, my names is Charles Holley but everyone calls me CJ. I'm a junior broadcast journalism major with an interest in sports broadcast. I love to play sports but I'm much better at some than I am at others. I've found that I can be a passive participant in just about any sport from football and basketball to tennis, soccer, and lacrosse. I'm most passionate when Maryland sports as well as the O's (they stink), the Ravens (got whooped today), the Wizards (suck more than the O's), and the Buffalo Bills (don't ask) are involved. Pretty much I get into sports for the excitement and entertainment of it but I would like to make it my profession. Currently I broadcast sports for the campus radio station WMUC (shameless plug: you can listen to our broadcasts at www.wmucsports.com), this season I'm the sidelines reporter for our home football broadcasts (not as good looking as Lisa Guerrero but I know Ramsey never played for the Jets...). I'd like to some day get paid to do what I do for the radio station now, doing live broadcasts, so in some ways I could view sports as personal economics for myself.

What's up everybody? My name is Dan, and I've been a huge fan of sports my whole life. Most of my interest stems from my father's love of sports and I think he pushed me to participate because of that. I played various sports from soccer to basketball to football to swimming. Swimming was the sport I stuck with the longest, and to this day I am still involved with my team as a member of the coaching staff. Hello all -- Viet Nguyen, 14:44:08 09/07/03 Sun

Hello all! My name is Viet Nguyen and I am a 21 year old junior who intends on achieving a Kinesiology degree here at the University of Maryland with specifics towards the Sports Marketing/Managerial side of KNES. I am originally from central Vietnam and on that note I must say, many stereotypes on Asian Americans and their "model minority" role in this society has not deterred me from pursuing my interest in this field as opposed the more common fields that most Asian Americans are perceived entering. (i.e, Comp Sci, engineering, etc.) This is due to my social surroundings as a child growing up here in our backyard of Silver Spring, Maryland. The neighborhood kids engaged into a lot of sports as well as other activities and I chose to be a part of it instead of watching from my bedroom window view as many others of our neighborhood kids' parents had them do. Initially, I was more involved in team sports such as Football and Basketball. I actually played for a Rec League for my county in my early middle school years. As the years went on and up into today, I find myself engaged into individual sports. Tennis and gold being my favorites. I also participate in passive/active viewing of such sports as I've joined some online fantasy leagues with the influence of some buddies from school. So all in all, I am a multi-talented athlete with interests in watching as well as playing sports of all types and I have future occupational interest in getting into the business side of sports (marketing, managing) from a degree in KNES.

Hello everyone, my name is Adam Decker. I am a sophomore kinesiology major. For as long as I can remember, sports has been an important part of my life. When I was very young I would attend my sisters softball, soccer, and basketball games and play along the sidelines. As i got a little older I began to play organized soccer at the age of six, and my father even started a basketball program for 3rd grade kids in my town. During my elementary days I always played for my dad which added extra drive and desire to win. However, after a life time of active participation, by my senior year of h.s. I was only playing soccer, after playing basketball and running track the previous 3 three of school. Right now I am a leisure particpant in all sports and am very involved in strength training. I can watch almost any sport with interest and I have even tried coaching youth soccer to get a different aspect to the sporting world. Looking forward to the class. -Adam Decker

Hello fellow classmates. My name is Jared Stuart and I am a fifth year senior completing my last 12 credits here at the University of Maryland. I grew up playing baseball and football as a kid, and then on into High School. My baseball abilities were good enough to catch the attention of division 1 colleges, which landed me here at UMD. I pitched here at Maryland for the last 4 years and loved every minute of it. A huge part of my life is gone now that I am attending school for the first time as a regular student. As a Junior, I was pitching the best baseball of my life with admirations of someday playing professionally. However, going into my senior season, my arm could not take all of the throwing between the long college season and summer ball. I develeoped a severe case of RC tendinitis which resulted in a poor senior season. As a result, as far as competition goes, I am done with sports, atleast for the minute. In other words, I will continue to love and follow sports for the rest of my life.

Sporting Biography -- Kerry Kennedy, 10:41:21 09/07/03 Sun

Hi! I'm Kerry Kennedy and I'm a senior communications major here at UMD. I'm on the varsity swim team here, which is the main reason I take so many Knes classes as my electives. I love sport, but unfortunatly lack in science skills so I would never be able to make it through the Knes program. So, I settled for communications and I eventually hope to go into some form of sports marketing after my undergraduate education. To me, sport is a way of life. I've pretty much done them all but then had to decide between just swimming and playing them all around middle school. I'm happy with the decision I made and I have about six months left before I am officially a retired swimmer! 15 years of sport has made me who I am and I can't imagine life without it.

Sporting Biography -- Adesanya A. Sokoya, 15:19:36 09/04/03 Thu

Whats up everyone? I am Adesanyap; born in DC but grew up in MD; my parents, however, came from Nigeria. I have basically done everything about sports apart from the professional participation and occupational participation. Normally, when I engage in leisure participation its to releave stress and/or to have fun, I also played a couple of sports in high school as well that was done to have fun. Like most people I do pasive spectating with my friends of family and yell at the televison and place bets with them as well, none of which has been paid. I have also done a bit of active spectating. I don't really like it because I can't really see what is goin on and have a hard time paying attention. However, there are times were i got perfect seating and was really into the game. I found that when your in a crowd of people with a common goal, you as well tend to pick up on there views and follow the crowd.

Hey everyone, My name is Darren and I'm a sophmore Kinesiology major from Silver Spring, MD. I have a lifetime love of sports and have both actively and inactively participated in a very wide range of them. The ones that I seem to enjoy most are basketball, football, tennis, and volleyball. If I'm not playing sports you can find me watching them and sometimes even studying. Another one of my greatest passions is sport fishing. Although there might be some controversy over whether or not this is a sport I just thought I'd mention it.

Yo, I have been actively participating in many different sports from bowling to pole vault to baseball. I have participated in many athletic endeavors all for that feeling of competition. When I know that I have won and defeated someone that is the greatest feeling. Being a spectator of sports there is nothing like being an active spectator. To be in the crowd, yelling that the other team sucks that is a rush. Sports are a way of life for me.

Sporting Biography -- Colleen Cronin, 09:09:41 09/07/03 Sun

Hey everyone! My name is Colleen Cronin and I am a sophomore kinesiology major. I am also getting my prerequisites to enter a nursing program after I earn my degree here. As the youngest of five children very much involved in athletics, I have always loved sports, whether at a leisurely or competitive level. I joined my first basketball team at the age of six and played well into my high school career. I absolutely loved being part of a team, but as the sport approached a more competitive level, my enjoyment somewhat faded. As for basketball, I am more of an active spectator now than a participant. I enjoy watching basketball at the collegiate level because of the excitement and bonding amongst spectators, but have never been as entertained by professional basketball. It's hard to believe that the players are in it for their love of the sport, when they are receivings ridiculous amounts of money and are taking advantage of their power over other people. Throughout the years I have also played soccer, volleyball, ran cross country, and indoor/outdoor track. I am also interested in hiking and swimming. Also, last year I joined the women's crew team here at Maryland. When it comes to sports I am not very picky as to what to play. I'm open to trying new things and enjoying moving and having a good time.

I also watch the NBA and NFL(aka the Eagles) and ESPN sports center is a necessity in life. I plan to make a career out of my passion for sports in the marketing field. My name is Danielle and I am a sophomore Kinesiology major. I have been playing sports pretty much since I have been able to walk. I have played many sports for just entertainment and exercise, but I have competed in soccer for the pure love of the game. I play soccer here so I guess its considered a professional participator. I am an active spectator of college athletics mostly basketball and football. I have never really enjoyed watching professional sports because it isnt as exciting as I would like it to be. To me it seems as if all the athletes in professional sports are playing for show and for money, but at the collegiate level I think its very entertaining. I have always enjoyed sports and I hope to be involved for a long time.

I started with baseball at the age of 8, didnt do too well at it, and then pursued gymnastics for a few years while competing in some team tournaments. Through junior high and high school, I began focusing on martial arts and wrestling, while still playing a little neighborhood football once a week or so.
At the age of 15, sports switched from a leisure to a professional activity when I starting teaching karate at a Germantown, MD school. Then, fitness itself became my profession, in a way, when I joined the Marines at 17. After getting out a few years ago, I became a personal trainer at a Gaithersburg gym. I have since been working with clients (focusing on Post-Rehabilitation) while still centering my personal sports efforts on wrestling and the martial arts.
In regards to professional sports participation, it is limited (i.e. extra passive) in my life. I enjoy a game once in a while, but I couldnt tell you who plays what and where, etc. etc. Honestly, I am too impatient to sit for that long, especially with all the commercials! :-)
Well, I look forward to a great semester with all of you!

Sports Biography -- Ira Weintraub, 22:02:01 09/06/03 Sat

My name is Ira Weintraub. I am a 27-year-old junior from Rockville, MD. Sports have been a part of my life since I was born. I was born into a family with Colts season tickets and have been regularly attending Orioles games and Maryland hoops games since I was 3 or 4. I played baseball, basketball and golf growing up. I don't miss home Terps basketball games and try to catch them on the road when possible. I also go to five or six University of Michigan football games (home, away and bowl) each season. I am also a big Detroit Red Wings fan. I am not that into the NBA, I find it to be boring most of the time. Nothing beats college sports! Not only do I love to watch sports but will try and make a career out of it. Before going back to college in 2002, I spent two years as a producer for "The John Thompson Show" on SportsTalk 980-WTEM. Now I occassionaly contribute to www.collegehoopsnet.com. I am working to get into the Journalism School to become a sports writer. In addition, I plan to minor in Kinesiology.

Sporting Biography -- Brian Wasser, 21:25:20 09/06/03 Sat

What's up everybody... my name is Brian Wasser, and I'm a junior marketing major from Potomac, MD. I've loved sports since I was a kid in little league, and have bled MD's red and black for as long as I remember! Originally I wanted to be a sports agent, but has since moved to Music and Entertainment Law instead. I guess my passion for music (I'm a DJ for a radio station - dj bRiSs at Hot995!!) kind of took over my love for sports. However, I played basketball and baseball as a child, and coached my sister's soccer team (Yea, we kicked butt!) My brother is a state champion athlete for track and field, and is a freshman in college. I'm a diehard hometown sports team fan, and love to see any of them win. My favorite sport to watch and play is without a doubt "American football," but games at Comcast Center are hard to beat! I took this class mostly because it's a prereq for Sport Marketing and Media, but it seems like this class will be fun, and have great debates. I look forward to a great semester, and wish everyone luck in their classes!

sporting biography by Dara Bruckner -- Dara Bruckner, 20:02:07 09/06/03 Sat

Hey everyone, my name is Dara Bruckner. I am a sophomore KNES major at UMD. I am from Great Neck, New York. At first when choosing this major i wanted to be a physical therapist, but now i want to be a doctor for a sports team. Sports has played a major role in my life since i was practically born. My dad and older brother are huge sports fans, especially when it comes to the Knicks, so i have been watching Patrick Ewing and John Starks since i could remember. When i was only seven years old i could tell you every stat for every Knick player. From age six until about two years i figure skated. I also played in Little League for two years. It was not until I was in sixth grade when I tried out for the basketball team and made it. I was on it for all three years in middle school. One of the greatest times in my life was in 8th grade when we won our league championship. Then I went to High School where I played basketball for all four years. I also played intramural hockey throughout freshman and sophomore year. Sports have made a huge impact on my life and is why I chose to be a KNES major.

Hi my name is Rachel and my major is undecided. i am thinking bout doing an individual studies program and create a sport's managment program for my major. i am very suprised that a school so involved in sports like the University of Maryland does not have this major but at least i can try and create this major for myself. I am on the gymnastics team here at MD and i want everyone to know that the UMD gymnastics team and gymkana are two completly different teams and i encourage you all to come to both of our events and competitions but I am on the Gymnastics team not Gymkana which are very easily confused. I hope to see you all @ many of my teams competitions this year and i also hope you all watch the md vs. florida state game tonight.... go terps!!!

Sporting Biography -- Jessica Keyman, 14:34:05 09/06/03 Sat

Hey everyone! My name is Jessica and i'm a Junior Kinesiology major here at Maryland. I plan on going to Chiropractic school at some point after I graduate! :) I'm from Olney, Maryland, which is only about 30-40 minutes away from College Park. Sports have always been a huge part of my life. When I was younger I played softball from the age of 8 until I was 14. During that time I also rode horses and competed in shows and other competitions even up through high school. I gave up softball when I entered high school because I became a cheerleader. It was sort of a tradition in my family to be a cheerleader once you entered high school so I wasn't going to let the tradition stop with me! I absolutely loved cheering for our football team every Friday night especially since we had one of the best teams in the state. I also made it to other sporting events not only to just see my friends play but because I love to watch sports, especially guys soccer and lax! I have also been skiing since I was in 6th grade and a couple of years ago I started to snowboard when I was in Colorado and immediately fell inlove with it! Besides my own personal involvement with sports all of my aunts and uncles played many different sports while they grew up and I got the chance to watch them play which is why I became so interested and excited to become involved with sports. A couple of my unlces even got recruited by the Texas Rangers and some NHL teams! Aright guys! Hope everyone had a good weekend and I'll see you all in class!

Sporting Biography -- Lisa Ruggiero, 14:29:21 09/06/03 Sat

Hi, my name is Lisa. I'm a junior kinesiology major from Livingston, New Jersey. I plan on studying physical therapy after I graduate from Maryland. I just switched to knes from communication this year, so this is one of my first knes classes. I spend most of my time during the week in classes and working on campus. My sporting experiences started when I was in grammer school. My father always encouraged me to play sports and sometimes I think he wishes I still played. I started playing soccer and softball from second grade until high school. My sporting experiences are now from the perspective of a spectator. I love watching ice hockey and baseball, I'm a big Devils and Yankees fan. I'm not really into football and basketball other than on the college level. Hopefully I'll learn some more and be able to better appreciate some of the sports I'm not really into right now after taking this course.

Hi guys. I'm Jeremy from Marlboro, New Jersey (central Jersey) I am a junior, majoring in Comm and Marketing. I probably want to do have a profession in sports marketing when I get older. Without sports my life wouldn't be the same. I have grown up with it since I was very young. I participated in Little League for 12 years, Rec Basketball for about 9 years, and so on. I never tried out for the high school teams but I probably should have. I follow most of the NY and NJ teams, and I have gone to many games over the past 10 years including Devils Stanley Cup clincher game in 2003.

I played baseball, football, and basketball until I got into high school, then it was all football. I come from a small town and so football was everything, the whole town came out to watch the games on Friday night. I ran track and field to get faster and stronger for football, competing in the shotput and 100 meter hurdles. I played all four years of high school football, going 40-3 while going to the state semi-finals twice. I was an all-county tight end my senior year and I played middle linebacker on defense. I was recruited to play in college for Div. 3 schools but came to Maryland for academics. I love sports and I can't even imagine how different my life would be with them.

Sports have been an important part of my life since i was about 5 when i started playin footbal. In highschool i furthured my sportin desire by lettered in 4 sports: football, baseball, track, and golf. Now I only play sports to feed a urge for competition and violent behavior. I still love being around sports. About 3 years ago I became a certified baseball umpire so i wouldn't have to take a boring 9-5 job. And because of this i love watching any type of sporting event where there is actual contact, no subjective sports.

Sporting Biography -- Larry Neuman, 12:37:14 09/06/03 Sat

Hey, I'm a junior KNES major from East Brunswick, NJ. Sports have always played a big role in my life. A major reason that I came to Maryland is because of their sports programs. Ever since I was little I've played sports. I started off playing basketball and baseball recreational leagues until I was about 10 years old. Then I chose to just go on playing soccer and played that on travel and school teams until the end of high school. I have always enjoyed watching sports and being an active fan. I watch sports whenever possible on tv, mostly soccer, basketball, and football. For the most part though, I am a huge basketball and soccer fan. Whenever international teams come over to play here in the U.S. I try to go to the games. Otherewise I go to a few basketball and baseball games a year. My love for sports is what turned me towards becoming a KNES major. I hope it will take me towards becoming either a physical therapists or an athletic trainer for a professional team.

Sporting Biography -- Stephanie Miller, 11:19:51 09/06/03 Sat

Hi! My name is Stephanie Miller, I am a KNES major, and I am from Olney, Maryland (right outside Rockville). My sporting biography probably wouldn't be considered sporty. I started dancing as soon as I could walk and took dance classes and participated in dance competitions until about 14. I stopped dancing because I became a cheerleader when I started high school. I cheered, competed, and coached a younger squad for 4 years. I guess cheerleading can be considered active spectating. Growing up with my brother and dad being avid Redskin and Capital fans, I have gone to many of the games. I prefer seeing sporting events live rather than watching on tv. I go to many of the Maryland sporting events and work out 4 times a week. In reference to the "E's of Sport as a Physical Culture," I like to dance as a form of expression, excitement, and entertainment. I work out for exercise, and I watch sporting events for excitement, entertainment, and education.

Sporting Biography -- Jessica Otts, 05:08:53 09/06/03 Sat

Hi everyone, I'm Jessie I'm a Kinesiology major in my junior year. My sporting bio consists of playing some sports when I was a child, hiking, swimming, yoga and working out at the gym (when I'm really good) these are my part-time leisure activities and I do these things for the exercise and entertainment. I like to be a passive spectator of gymnastics and boxing because I think they're exciting and entertaining. My interests are changing and I'm learning a lot about games I previously new nothing about through the activity requirement in this major so I hope by the time I graduate I won't be so sport illiterate and I can keep up with the rest of this crowd.

Sporting Biography -- Stacey Thaler, 22:15:02 09/05/03 Fri

Hello everyone! My name is Stacey and I am from New York. As a junior kinesiology/ pre-med major I would have to admit that I participate in sports more passively than actively. As a child I played on several sports teams as well as attended numerous sporting events. With a father extremely devoted to sports, holding season tickets to the Jets and Mets, I became an active spectator early on in life. Since freshman year I have gained interest in college sports for entertainment purposes. Most importantly I enjoy exercising to stay in shape and relieve stress. I think it is clear that sports play a role in everyday life and is essential to our health.

Hello my name is Jemika. I'm from Upper Marlboro, Md and I played tennis when I was in high school. I enjoy watching sports even though most of the time I am a passive spectator. Unless someone does something really good that makes me want to watch or I'm interested in the who wins like when the Sixers played the Lakers in the finals (a few years back), then I am a active spectator. I enjoy watching both football and basketball (including the And1 games that are on ESPN). I also enjoy watching "The Best D*** Sports Show Period" at night to get all the highlights of all the sports (check it out, its really entertaining).

Sporting Biography -- Micah Bender, 19:14:41 09/05/03 Fri

I am a junior finance major. I was born and raised in Gaithersburg, Maryland. As long a I have been able to walk sports has been apart of my life. I started playing sports as a young boy playing soccer as most people do these days. When I was 11 I stopped playing soccer in favor of football in the fall, and baseball in the spring. In high school I played only football. I was the captain of the JV team my sophomore year, and again on Varsity my senior year. For my first two years here at Maryland I was an equipment manager for the football team. And starting in the fall I will become an assistant coach at a local area high school for there JV football team. On top of any of that, I am probably one of the biggest Washington Redskins fans there is in this great country of ours. In the past 8 years I have only missed three home Redskins games, and that was because Maryland football required my time. When I am at a Redskins game, or any sporting event for that matter, it takes me away. I feel that I am in a place where no one can touch me. Where I am free of all else going on in the world, and I feel that most people feel that, which is the main reason why sport is so important to America. And lastly, be sure to watch the Maryland game tomorrow night at 7:15pm on ESPN2. GO TERPS!!!!

Sporting Biography -- Sean O'Connor, 17:16:45 09/05/03 Fri

Hey, my name is Sean and I'm a junior going for a double degree in Marketing and Communications (Public Relations). I'm from MA and I have been involved in sports throughout my life in many different ways. Growing up I have been an active participant on actual teams in baseball, lacrosse, ice hockey, and soccer. I have played many other sports for fun like basketball and football, but I was never involved on an actual team for them. I would consider myself more of an active spectator when watching any Boston pro sports team or an MD team. I am a passive spectator when watching other teams. I am also an active spectator because of fantasy baseball. Since coming to college, I have been working with the athletic media relations department. That is how I am occupationally involved in sports. So I'm pretty involved overall, unfortunately I haven't and probably won't be involved on the professional level.

Sport Bio -- Tai Dial, 16:01:37 09/05/03 Fri

Hello everyone! My name is Tai and I am a KNES major from Fort Washington, MD. My parents never put me in any type of sporting teams while growing up. I did participate in gymnastics for a while, but later focused on dancing. I've always been a spectator of sports especially Redskin football games(not saying that I am a Redskin fan!). When I was younger my grandparents would have football parties all the time and my cousin and I would be forced to sing the Redskins fight song "Hail to the Redskins!" to a bunch of drunk adults! I became more interested in watching basketball in high school because my team, Oxon Hill Clippers, had made it to the championships three years in a row. I would have to say that I am an active spectator at a game and passive spectator in front of a TV. I enjoy spectating more than participating, which is just fine with me!

Sporting Biography -- Andrea Duncan, 14:54:58 09/05/03 Fri

My name is Andrea and I am a sophomore kinesiology major at Maryland. My first involvement in sports was at age five when I started playing soccer. As I got older I played for WAGS (Washington Area Girls Soccer league), my high school, and I played for two years for Maryland's Olympic Development Program. I also played two years of lacrosse in high school as a secondary sport. I grew up watching the MLS and the men's and women's national soccer teams. One of my most memorable sport moments was going to the semi-finals of the men's world cup when it was held in D.C. Since soccer is not as popular a sport in the United States as it is everywhere else it was one of the only opportunites I had to experience the game on the level the rest of the world seems to experience it all the time. Growing up as an athlete also drew my attention to other sports like football, which I have grown up watching every Sunday with my family.

Sporting Biography -- Kacy Dovich, 14:31:14 09/05/03 Fri

This is Kacy, a senior Kinesiology major, raised in Frederick, Md, and still living there. Being the only daughter of a house wife and a military officer, my parents started me out very young in many facets of sports and physical activity. However, much of what I have actually been involved in, many of you might not consider as "real" sports. At two I was enjoying hockey games with my parents, cheering on the Caps every season, and to this day, sorry, but they are still my all time favorite sports team!!! At 4, ballet, tap, and gymnastics classes are where my mother thought every little girl should be. At 5, my mother tired out because I was out of control with so much energy decided to put me into yet another activity, which has been the main sport in my life for the past 17 years, Baton Twirling. At age 6 I began performing in local and regional parades, at 7 I began competing on the national level, winning my first national title at age 8. Also at 7, after deciding that I wanted to be a tomboy, and not take dance anymore, my parents put my into figure skating, to develop a more graceful approach to baton, but along with that I also played Ice Hockey. Having a professional ballerina as a baton coach, dance still remained in my life. At 9, soccer was a hobby for a bit, but that wore off pretty quickly, this was more of a leisure activity. At 16 I was a Cheerleader for my high school football and basketball teams. At 15, and 19, I competed in the World Baton Twirling Championships in Milan, Italy and Birmingham, England. And at age 22, after retiring I helped coach my first team at the 2003 World Championships in Marsaille, France. Now I coach Baton Twirlers on the national and international level, I work with Cheerleaders throughout the state, and I am a professional choreographer, working with many high school dance squads and even the University of Maryland Dance Team on occasion. I have never been very good at being a spectator, even coaching is hard for me because I would rather be out on the competition floor or on the field entertaining people, as opposed to standing on the sidelines. Due to my experience and involvement in these sports, I now enjoy them as a very large part of my income, and hopefully with a degree in Kinesiology I can use my educational experiences here at Maryland to continue working in these fields and either go on to PT school, athletic training, or even sports marketing.

Sporting Biography -- Kacy Dovich, 14:29:17 09/05/03 Fri

Sporting Biography -- Evan Millar, 10:44:40 09/05/03 Fri

I am a junior journalism major from outside Philadelphia. I've been surrounded by sports my entire life. One uncle played semi-pro football, another starred in soccer and basketball in college, and my mom was a collegiate scholarship swimmer. My family, and the friends I've made on teams, ranging from small community basketball leagues to high school varsity and travel league baseball, have helped me become who I am. Now, I play intramurals, summer leagues, and actively and passively participate in several sports, mainly Spurs basketball. I enjoy how sports can connect people from diverse backgrounds and direct them toward a common goal. The world can learn a lot from sporting culture. I hope to write for Sports Illustrated, a huge symbol of sporting culture. This class will help me better understand the world of sports.

Luke Stauffer -- Luke Stauffer, 08:24:38 09/05/03 Fri

My participation in sports have played a large roll in my life. When I was young I participated in wrestling, football, baseball, and I even played a little soccer (before I was old enough to play football). As I grew older, I began to only participate in wrestling and football. I began to have problems with my knees so I decided to stop playing baseball (I was a catcher) to try to save them for my other two sports. Throughout high school I wrestled and played football and was successful in both sports. It was clear, however, that I did not have the size or speed to compete in football at the college level. Wrestling has helped me a great way. I would not have gotten into the University of Maryland if I was not on the wrestling team. Wrestling also keeps me exercising and in shape. It has also hepled me out economically because it is helping me pay for this very very expensive education. Well thats how sports have impacted me so far in my life.

Sporting Biography -- Jayme-Lee Cilente, 08:05:35 09/05/03 Fri

Hello. My name is Jayme and I am a tranfer student from American University. I am somewhere in between my junior and senior year here at UMD, and I am working on a BA in Kinesiology Sciences. Once I graduate I plan to continue my education in either physical therapy or sports psychology. As for my sporting biography, I am not sure where to begin. My childhood was filled with every activity from dance class, swimming, and soccor, to softball, lacrosse, and cheerleading (and yes cheerleading is a sport). In high school I continued to play anything I was able to get my varsity letter in which included cheerleading, basketball, softball, field hockey, and lacrosse. Since I started college I haven't been as much as a participant as I have been a spectator in sports. I love the Washington Redskins, and hope to catch a few UMD games too! I love to just workout now and spend everyday at the gym working as a personal trainer.

Sports involvement -- Jordan Glick, 23:54:43 09/04/03 Thu

Since i was a young boy, i have been actively involved in sports. Baseball has always been my favorite and best sport. I am a bit obsessed with baseball. In high school i was captain of my varsity baseball team for two years. I also played football, soccer, and wrestling. Soccer was a big part of my life for years, but in my sophomore year of high school my brother was kicked off the team, so i quit and went to play football, American football that is. I continued to play sports in college, but my active participation has vastly decreased due to tearing my acl. Now i am more of an active spectator, who bets on sports all the time. I am a home town boy who loves the Baltimore Orioles (baseball) and the Baltimore Ravens (football). I attend as many games as I can, and spend every night watching sports center if not the actual game. I couldn't imagine life without sports. I love to be active and go outside and be active in whatever. I also love to talk sports and occasionally go into sporting chat rooms just to talk sports.

bio -- jen kopecko, 23:14:16 09/04/03 Thu

Hi, my name is Jen also. I always loved sports though never could play games with balls. I think that even runners and swimmers partake in the Ludic/ Expression definition of sport because every athlete has their own style and movement. Their stride and posture are individual. As are their methods of training and courtside attitude, or the way in which they enter their hands into the water, or the way that they dress. Sports are leisure for me and I like going to watch sport events though never got much into football. Ill watch b-ball and tennis on TV though (passive). I rode horses since forever and I played lacrosse in HS. I ran XC and track for a year in Rochester. Now I do some triathlons and road races for fun (all the E's) and work at a gym (occupational).

Sporting Biography -- Kevin Simms, 22:29:10 09/04/03 Thu

Hi! My name is Kevin Simms and I come from Philadelphia PA. I am a junior Kinesiology major here and hope to become involved in sport psychology when I graduate. Recently I have become more of a passive spectator when it comes to watching sports, and I think the reason behind that is because watching sporting events has become a time to relax and enjoy the game. I use to play baseball in high school and was much more of an active spectator when I was closer to the sport. Another explanation for my passive spectating, I believe, stems from my father who is also, and has always been, a passive spectator. I am a fan of all Philadelphia teams just as my father is. I have a theory that whatever teams your parents root for will be the teams you root for. In a sense, we learn who to root for from what we see as we grow up. Maybe sports spectating follows the same path?

Sporting Biography -- Mark A. Page, 19:01:09 09/04/03 Thu

Good Evening to everyone, My name is Mark Page. I have been in the U.S. Navy since April 1996,sports are very important to my family and I. I am married and have two children who when I am not at school occupy whatever free time I have. We love to play any sports. I played high school football and baseball and would have loved to continue with either in college but unfortunately I didn't. Sports were in my life from very early on, my family was very active spectators of the Orioles and Colts. Anyone who says sports is not important in the lives of Americans and many others worldwide needs to take off their blinders, waske up, drink some more coffee or just remove their head from the sand, because sports is everywhere in on everything and driven by the almighty dollar.

Sporting Biography -- Oluwaseun Ogunlana, 18:54:37 09/04/03 Thu

Hi everyone. My name is Seun (which is the shorter version to my name) I was born and raised in Nigeria, I currently live in MD. When I lived in Nigeria, I was an active spectator of soccer, I have done a lot of yelling at the tv and also a lot of screaming GOAL! Soccer is the national sport of Nigeria. I love to watch soccer because of the intensity and also the excitement I get from watching the games. I used to play soccer with other kids in the community but now I rarely play nor do I watch any of the soccer games. My reasons is due to the fact that soccer isn't a big thing in the United States and it just doesn't feel the same as watching it in Nigeria. Currently I am an active spectator of Tennis, because I love to watch the Williams Sisters play. I love the intensity in which they play and how they go head to head in the finals. Although this year I not into the US open compared to last year because the William Sisters aren't participating and it is not just the same. The US open this year sort of lacks the persona and excitement that It usually has. I don't play tennis, but I do understand the game I hope to some day learn to play. Apart from Tennis and maybe Ice Skating I am yet to understand why people like the American football and also yet to figure out Baseball.

Sporting Biography -- Rachel Clark, 18:04:40 09/04/03 Thu

Hey guys, my name is Rachel and I am a double major in Psychology and Kinesiology. I was born in Potomac, MD and still live there. I have been involved in physical activity my whole life, but not necessarily sports. When I was in elementary school, I played soccer, basketball, softball and took gymnastics classes, but I had to stop those when I got more serious about dancing and figure skating in middle school. In high school I got even more serious about dance, so I focused mainly on that outside of school. I am on the dance team here at UMD, which has gotten me interested in sports again since I dance at all of the football and basketball games. I also played intramural soccer last spring, so in addition to being an active spectator when I dance at the games and a passive spectator when I watch other sports on TV, I was also involved in leisure participation. I like watching college sports more than professional, mostly just because I feel more of a connection to them because of UMD. On that note, everyone remember to watch MD vs. Florida St. on Saturday night (7:15 pm ESPN2) and look for the dance team! :)

Sporting Biography -- Jen Sterling (T.A./Message Board Moderator), 17:38:58 09/04/03 Thu

Well, as message board moderator I was supposed to kick this discussion off and sort of lead the way for you all but I see that Adesanya has beaten me to it. Regardless, here is my contribution and kick-off to the message board 'season.'

I am a doctoral student in the Sport Commerce and Culture program within the Kinesiology department here at Maryland. I was born and Iowa and moved here recently from Seattle. My sporting involvement encompasses the full spectrum of the work to play continuim, minus the professional athlete. Occupationally I have been involved in athletic training and within the administrative structure of USA Volleyball, as well as making the pursuit of this sociological perspective of sport my professional aspiration. I also make some spare change as a whitewater guide during the summer. My leisure participation ranges from competitive collegiate athletics to hiking; although some of you may want to argue the categorical placement of collegiate athletics as a subgroup of leisure, rather than professional, participation. I am an avid ultimate frisbee participant and an outdoor enthusiast. I much prefer actually participating in the game but given the choice I would rather see the game in person (active participation) than watch it on TV or read about it (passive participation).
The outcomes of my involvement in sport involve all the E's; some more than others. For me, sport has most often provided excitement, expression, exercise and an economic impact. The sports that I play add variety and excitement to my life and allow me to express certain world views (see above chosen sports) all the while providing exercise. Economically, sport has allowed me to pay my rent for the last two years. The education and entertainment E's have had a lesser impact on my life. Although a younger version of myself was once socialized via sport its impact has lessened. As far as entertainment goes, I honestly find sports more fulfilling than entertaining. Not to say that I don't get caught up in the frenzy but most likely less than the average sport lover.

Well, that's enough I think.
Remember, 9:00am on Monday is the cut-off for postings.
Have a good weekend.
Men's soccer, Terps vs. UCLA (1 & 2 in the nation) Friday at 8pm.

Jen

Sporting Biography -- Albert Jones,II, 17:36:20 09/04/03 Thu

What's up people, my name is Albert but I perfer that everyone call me "Aj." I from P.G. County, MD. and I am currently playing football for Maryland and hope to play professionally in the NFL. I have been playing american football and basketball all my life. Now I just use basketball as a leisure activity, but somtimes I play competively because I can't help myself. It like a nagging itch that needs to be sratched. I've just recently been a passive spectator due the fact that I transfer from a difference school so, I had to watch the football team practice for a little while. I also watch professional games but, when doing that I am more of an active spectator. When I watch games I always have my full attention to the game or games I watch. I really don't go to professional games that much because it makes me want to go out there and play with them(Which will happen in about 4 years).
