Subject: The UBF favorite hymn

Recently, Andrew mentioned in his testimony that in his chapter they had to sing “All hail in the power of Jesus’ name” in every Sunday worship service. Then I remember that we also had one song called „Singt unserm Herren alle Welt“ that we had to sing in every Sunday worship service. Since it was not in our hymn book, we had to copy it and paste it on the back of the front cover of every book, plus we had to learn it by heart. Then we had to sing it every Sunday. Since I did not know “All hail”, I googled for it in the Internet and found that it was exactly the same as our hymn, our song was just a German translation.

When reform started, Kaleb Hong always tried to convince me that our chapter (and every other chapter) was unique and independent from Chicago. But I see more and more how even such little details were copied, similar to a franchise concept.

By the way, we had to sing the hymn always at the beginning of the service, and at the end we had to sing “Our Father” (UBF is the only place where I ever experienced people singing the Our Father instead of praying it). Since that version of “Our Father” wasn’t in our hymn book (I can’t even find it in the Internet, but if you are in UBF you will know it anyway), we again had to copy and paste it on the back cover of the books.

How common was it to sing “All hail” in the beginning and “Our Father” in the end of the service? Was there any special reason? I assume that they were simply the favorite songs of Samuel Lee and some chapter leaders wanted to please him particularly by singing it. Kaleb Hong always tried to do everything the “Samuel Lee way” despite Kaleb’s claims (see above). He also let us pray for 120 members because Samuel Lee told him that number. Once he changed the worship service time from 3pm to 11am, and arguing that most chapters in UBF changed it to 11am and how wonderful the thought was that everywhere in the world people in UBF are worshipping God at the same time. (Contravening again his other claims that all chapters should have their unique styles. By the way, I think UBF is still divided over the 11am/3pm question, both are popular. Since Chicago UBF has services at both times, other chapters are confused which time to use. And of course, 11am in Chicago or anywhere else in the world is not the same as 11am in Germany anyway, so Kaleb’s argument was foolish.)

I remember that Samuel Lee integrated singing “Our Father” in his “impromptu” speaches on the European and Russian conferences in 2000. And I remember that his singing was so strange that it sounded for me like he was trying to mock God. Don’t know whether anybody else had that feeling, but it was really very strange and I felt very uneasy.

By the way, I have put “impromptu” in quotes because I don’t think Lee’s speaches at conferences were impromptu. He orchestrated every little detail of these conferences, so I assume that his speaches (which were considered the most important parts of the conferences by the hardcore members and himself) were mostly prefabricated as well. They just were not printed on the program, because Samuel Lee wanted to demonstrate that he was the (only) one who was standing above the pregiven program and did not have to follow it. But he certainly had already cleverly devised what and when to speak. I also noticed that he held the same „impromptu“ speaches at the European and Russian conference.
