Date Posted: Wed, Aug 26 2009, 16:04:04 Having reviewed minutes to August Board meeting, I need to vent and hope all homeowners who have children who use basketball courts pay close attention to what the Board is doing. Five Board members voted to PERMANENTLY remove basketball goals and posts (but don't know what they will do with them once removed). The minutes imply this is being done because of two incidents - one involving loud music, and one involving a "suspicious" individual (who did nothing), and another individual who jumped a pool fence. It was also dicussed at meeting that Board reps. had met with MJPD Chief Andy Garrett, who said he would increase patrols in amenity area including bicycle patrols. Also, alternatives to permanently eliminating the basketball courts was discussed - such as shortening one goal post, thus eliminating full court games (an alternative I happen to favor). But it appears that some Board members would not be swayed - despite Chief Garrett's word and alternative suggestions, the only way to stop this crime spree in Willoughby Station is to permanently and totally remove the basketball courts. This has to be the case, because according to a board member/realtor, home values in W.S. have dropped because we have basketball courts (?!!!?) So let's see - the Board replaced "defective" camera at lower pool, they are getting pricing on additional cameras, and then they will get price on cost of installing additional cameras. The Board also agreed to "commit" to gating the entrance to amenity area at Sydney Terr. (no mention of price there), install a card reader system for area, put bushes and boulders around amenity area, all while they are to look at different"membership levels" in subdivision to finance a clubhouse. If basketball courts are the root of all evil in the Amenity area and they were voted to be removed, why must we spend all this money on additional security measures. Won't the bad element avoid W.S. like the plague if there is no where to play basketball? Why not put security measures in place before taking away an amenity that many homeowners use. Why can we not try a suggested alternative to total removal of courts and see if that alleviates problems? Why can we not take Chief Garrett at his word and see if there will be an increased police presence at amenity area? Homeowners, pay attention!
