We are pleased to announce that Grade Exams (Grades 1-6) will be held at Marquette University on Saturday, December 14. Anne Hall ADCRG/BG from Colorado will serve as the examiner.
For dancers who are trying to make college decisions or who want to keep dancing in college, Milwaukee is an amazing city. There are over a dozen local feiseanna and the Mid-American Oireacthas will be just blocks from Marquette's campus in 2025 and 2026. Marquette also boasts a growing Irish Dance club (Saoirse) and offers for-credit courses in Irish dancing and Irish music.
In addition to taking grade exams and getting a chance to tour Marquette's beautiful campus, dancers and families can enjoy a festive outing at Milwaukee's Christmas Market, located just a few blocks away from campus.
We are excited to welcomed dancers and their families to campus. Our hope is to offer grade exams twice per year (December and April) so that Marquette's students will have ample opportunities to continue to grow as dancers.

I know there are many things judges look for .. turnout, crossing, carriage, pointing, rhythm, timing, choreography etc…. I also know that some judges really focus on turnout ..another crossing. Everyone has their thing. So here is my question…… how can timing not be MORE important than those other things?? Do some judges not care about it? Over and over I have seen top dancers be totally off time for a large part of set and still score high. I don’t understand it. If a dance is completely off time than what does the rest matter?

There's an author from Milwaukee who's good (Rod Vick) as well as Brenna Briggs (who wrote MAIDS-Mothers Addicted to Irish Dancing?); she's also from that region and lived in Ireland as well. Briggs wrote Liffey Rivers mysteries.

Worlds back to one day format and max recall of 50 dancers. So in the larger age categories, 75% will go home disappointed.
IDTANA runs the North American Championships every year with just as many dancers as Worlds (and sometimes more, the NAIDC in Nashville last year was the biggest ID competition in history), over FIVE days instead of EIGHT (yes, I know this year NAIDC is 6 days, but usually it's 5), and split age groups with 50% recall.
WHAT is CLRG doing? Can they really not utilize more space for a Worlds to run more stages over fewer days? Can they really not split larger age groups and offer a larger recall percentage? I don't know who plans this thing, but could literally anyone at CLRG give someone at IDTANA a call?

In a “regular” dance competition (the type that allows tap, ballet, contemporary, etc) dancers go alone, and judges speak into a mic with feedback and criticisms as they see them. After the competition, the dancer receives a recording and they can hear the judges comments on a track alongside the routine so they know exactly where their foot wasn’t pointed, etc. the judges also say if choreography isn’t suiting a dancer or working well on stage so the teachers get feedback.
The others at my studio say this isn’t a thing in Irish, even at championship levels? How do you get enough feedback for a competition to really be useful? How do teachers know how their choreography is being received? Are there any competitions like this?
A solo at these competitions is usually $140-175, and I’d be willing to pay more and compete less if these kinds of competitions do exist.
Also, does your dance studio offer a stretch/conditioning class? The one we go to does not and I’m not sure if that’s common in Irish.

Grade exams take ages and are hosted rarely. The actual exam is like once a year and most likely half way across the world. Not to mention the costs of it all.
Making it impossible to get is stunting the sport. I cannot believe the only exam at the moment is in Australia. Why don’t they have TCRG exams at majors, or the week after a major finishes.
All of this to teach a child’s sport.

Hi there! My daughter is dancing in the Great Britain Championships today. I was working through her dancing, and didn't think I would be finished work in time to watch her results. However, it now looks possible that I may be finished just in time to catch the end of the results today.
If any kind person has the event on their FEISTv log in wouldn't mind sharing their account details, I would hugely appreciate it. It would just be for an hour. I would buy it myself, but I'm not 100% sure that I'll be finished on time. It's just in case I do get off in time to log in on my phone before going home.

For feis that had low numbers, post a save the date and your info early. I already have seen feis postings for June. It helps parents/dancers get the time off of work and plan.
I’m sure you will see a higher turnout at your feis. Some won’t register until they see the judges so post that as soon as you know.

I do not think they had anything to do with any cheating, but in the climate Irish dance is currently in, I think it is absolutely rediculous that TCs would do such a thing. In front of all the parents watching, you’re going to go hug the judges that have been judging your dancers all weekend. TALK ABOUT TONE DEAF. Why give anyone any reason to think there is suspicious activity going on even if there is not.

If it’s to protect minors, have waivers be signed when registering for a feis.
At this point not allowing video taping is holding back Irish dancing. We can spread the sport to the rest of the world. There have been so many videos go viral, why not allow video taping?

Cincinnati feis used to always cap for champs but not even close now. Grades have capped, which is unexpected. It’s the last feis before Midamerica Oireachtas and typically has a high turn out.
People are clearly waking up! Several out of region schools are even attending and still not near cap.

I'm guessing the "gloom and doom" poster has an axe to grind. I wouldn't want to minimize the many issues with judging, but it's sad to see these boards dragged down by a few angry people.

Both my daughter’s existing TC and new TC worked together to integrate my daughter into the new school. Both TCs wrote to the committee asking an exemption be granted and we were harshly denied. Why all of a sudden are exemptions being granted so generously??
Either they have a 6 month ban for everyone regardless of reason, or remove it entirely.

- Safesport- I wish teenage dancers had to do the safesport course as well, I didn’t know I was being groomed and abused until I was done with Irish dance. I had to do the same course for a coaching position and it made me sick realizing what my teacher (an ADCRG) did, literally broke all the rules. -- Just an idea, 14:28:23 09/03/24 Tue
It’s great to make the teachers do the course but it would be better if parents of younger ones and then teens old enough to handle it actually did the course as well. It gives language to behavior they may not be able to understand or express to others.

I know of several 8th through 10th graders retiring from dance or just dancing for fun with no longer competing. I knew this would come but thought it would be later high school years.
Is there typically a big drop off in early teens or is this maybe related to the scandal? Just curious what others are seeing in their area.

- Very typical. Some girls are getting more involved with varsity sports and/or picking up a lot of AP classes. Some are picking up part-time jobs, some just want to spend more time with friends. Will there be a big reduction in clrg membership? Our t.c has a lot of speculation on other connacht schools but nothing confirmed.....time will tell I suppose. She said the school who went to CRDM is small and won't make any difference unlike the big loss hession will be.

Are they going back to old formula? littles had a 50% recall under the new formula but I don’t see timewise with 2 stages and fewer judges how they can do this for larger groups. Some families liked the 2 day format when kids from schools with no connection at least had a shot at a recall to day 2. They need to keep registration up for all this to work but to pay more for less (2 rounds ) maybe 3) knowing the day will be crazy long makes me wonder if numbers will be what they need. Not to mention the high cost of accommodation in Dublin. Wonder if they will also cut the solo rounds medals from AI? Again less for more. Dancers ‘paying’ yet again for CLRGs mismanagement

The 6 month non-compete ban should be challenged given the new FTC noncompete rule that has gone into effect. The 6 month ban has not been legally challenged in many years (in the U.S.). Did anyone actually sign a contract with a non-compete clause or is this just an implied rule that we have blindly adhered to? Getting rid of the ban would eliminate the inequity of power teachers have over dancers. Too many bad teachers use the ban as retaliation. The way the rule is set up, if a dancer wants to transfer and attend a major, they must choose which major to miss to serve out the ban, which is unfair. If a school closes, the dancers are the ones penalized. The ban only serves to protect the organization and the teachers. In no way does it protect or help the dancer. The restyling excuse is ridiculous, either the dancer is ready to compete, or they are not, it should be discretionary.
We had a teacher who used the ban as a threat or would kick out dancers (out of spite), purposely knowing they would miss a major. These kids had worked hard to qualify and should be allowed to compete. This teacher would also bad mouth the dancers that she had kicked out, then try and block them from moving to other schools. Bad teachers like this one should not have the power to use the ban as retaliation, or worse, teachers should not have the power to block dancers from moving schools, slander transfer students, tank them at competitions, or ban dancers from having friends in other school (our old teacher would check her students social media and threaten to kick them out if they didn’t unfriend the dancer that she had kicked out). And yes, most of us left this teacher, and despite complaints to the CLRG, the teacher is still around, doing the same thing.
It’s time to get rid of the ban!
